Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Royals

Andy Dirks and Don Kelly have the exact same numbers against James Shields (both 1-for-3), but Kelly gets the start in left today. Everything else is the regular lineup.

It’ll be interesting to see how Jim Leyland uses his bullpen today, though Verlander’s start means he shouldn’t need his bullpen for many innings. Jose Valverde has pitched four of the last six days if you count his minor-league stint in Lakeland. Al Alburquerque says he’s fine after his hip tightened up on him last night, but Leyland did not sound like he wants to pitch him if he can help it.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (5-for-13, 3 K’s off James Shields)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (10-for-32, 8 K’s off Shields)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (13-for-26, HR, 2 walks, 4 K’s off Shields)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (1-for-6, walk off Shields)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (7-for-19, 6 K’s off Shields)
  6. Jhonny Peralta, SS (10-for-22, 3 HR, 2 walks, 5 K’s off Shields)
  7. Don Kelly, LF (1-for-3 off Shields)
  8. Alex Avila, C (4-for-15, HR, walk, 7 K’s off Shields)
  9. Omar Infante, 2B (2-for-16, 5 K’s off Shields)

P: Justin Verlander

  1. Alex Gordon, LF (10-for-47, 2 HR, 4 walks, 17 K’s off Verlander)
  2. Alcides Escobar, SS (5-for-22, walk, 4 K’s off Verlander)
  3. Billy Butler, DH (21-for-53, 2 HR, 4 walks, 7 K’s off Verlander)
  4. Eric Hosmer, 1B (2-for-20, 3 walks, 4 K’s off Verlander)
  5. Lorenzo Cain, CF
  6. Mike Moustakas, 3B (3-for-18, walk, 5 K’s off Verlander)
  7. Jeff Francoeur, RF (6-for-26, HR, 7 K’s off Verlander)
  8. Salvador Perez, C (3-for-8 off Verlander)
  9. Chris Getz, 2B (6-for-22, walk, 3 K’s off Verlander)

P: James Shields

Well someone in LF have to the bull by the horns. Nick and QB are not hitting in AAA and only JJ in AA is hitting 300.

Yes, VV is a question mark, but his track record gives him credibility assuming he maintains his stuff. The pen has generally been bad. Not counting VV, 3 for 6 in save opportunities with a 1-4 record and a 4.24 ERA. Things just set up better for the pen with a reliable and effective closer. I’m dancing with VV at this point, not complaining.

NC is starting to hit.

Today we need to see Coke, Downs, and Rondon out of the BP. Hey, you know what, I think Rondon has closed a few games in the last three years. Maybe he could do it. Then again Coke did close one started by Justin this year. We do have options. If Valverde pitches for the fifth time in six days, then it’s time to consider whether the management team is the problem.

As tired as I am getting of Alex Avila at the plate, the umpire screwed him over, that was at no time a strike!

We’ve had issues with one of the Welke brothers before. Don’t remember if it was Mike or Tim.

Bill, not Mike.

goll dangit infante that ones on you buddy

4th inning sleeting in ro sun at the park. Must be nice to heild strike zone. Martinez getting screwed over too…justin not getting those calls.

good to see the boys make a run happen there. sad we couldn’t get a hit with all those guys on base. especially victor – c’mon victor!

if the tarp goes out i’d pull justin and just put smyly in there and see how far he can go. 2-3 innings maybe.

Did we score our second run via a walk, two wild pitches, and a SF? Is that right??
We won last night but it was not because everyone was hitting the cover off the ball. We simply need to have one inning where we bat around and get five or six hits while we do it. Go Tigers.

yes and honestly the SF was to shallow CF and prince just barely made it. throw had to be cut off by pitcher and this allowed prince to score.

Below going to the AAA Tigers team in Miami

he passed waivers?

Claimed by the Marlins

No, meteorologist he went to the Marlins!!!!

Hey, Gk would you think the next team to score wins this game?? 2-2 in the fifth.

We have heard that Benoit is to weak to close. But he has better numbers than Valverde. It is like with Dirks, not being an everyday player, how they know if never tried them?
It different with AlAl, he has a history of injuries

damn below going to marlins – there goes a possible AAA backup starter. dangit

Although Benoit looks like the veteran with the best potential to close, other than VV, he has only been successful 14 times in 38 MLB save opportunities. He is definitely a proceed with caution proposition.

not to mention: the long ball!!!

Both true, but still he was an option since Valverde was expected in may 8th

How many innings for Justin today??

One more

Go Jhonny go!!

Seventh inning stretch. Let’s go bat. And keep V-Mart away from the bat rack!!!

Nice dplay there in the 7th. I don’t know who wins because kc has always been the nickel an dime jinda team, but since we scored the next run I will say yes! 🙂
Regarding benqoit and closing, he pretty much came out and said he had no interest in closing. I’m. Sure that had somethin to do with their decision.

enter the RONDON!

JV day to day

Did he knock a ball down with his bare hand??

Well Rondon blew hi first attempt……..awesome.

Let’s put in the notebook. Fast guy stole a base off him. Cost us a run.

There was pinch runner for Butler

the boys are not paying attention to the baserunners. kinda cost us a run, ya know?

well i guess not with that double hit afterwards

Where we at in the order?? We need a rally!!

Tying run and nearly gave up he go ahead. Not going to kill him his first outing but its pretty obvious they didn’t have a hard time wth his fastball, he JV sure probably wishes he could of gone back out.

The slider worked and the first hit was by the same who was 396 vs Verlander before the game

rondon going back out there!? holy smokes, smokes, what are you doing!?

Just got home. Why is Verlander not pitching?

cracked skin in the thumb

Why keep calling fastballs?

in coke we trust

Well…….whatever they hit, he wasn’t fooling anyone or blowing anything by anyone. He did not do a good job.

too bad JV won’t get a decision in this game – not sure Rondon was ready for such a tight situation with Butler of all people up to bat, that guy kills us, but guess he has to get put into the game at some point, but geez..

if getz didn’t bunt that he was going to be hit hard in the stomach. heh heh.

Don’t let that PR steal third!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Phil!!

Come on Cokie!!!

Light a candle!

Let’s get a walk off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting approach by JL to get matchups for Coke. Just walk the RHBs.

no perez, no butler. tee hee

And again that wasn’t even close to being a strike there to Fielder. And again not a pitch he gave one of outr pitchers. Welke is appearenty fooled by left handed pitchers that wear a KC uniform.

Does Downs or Smyly pitch the tenth???

OK i think it’s time to get Coke outta there. C’mon Jim don’t get caught with your loogy out there for too long. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.

def. time to get Coke outta there. goooolllllldang jim

Oh, my.

Where is Downs?

there have been a boatload of wild pitches today

jim you really blew it today man. ugh man. ugh you absolutely blew it man.

I think the pitchers and of course the batters only getting 5 hits blew it, and let’s not forget the Infante error that cost us a run and if that not have happened the game wuld of been over. Poor performance all the way around.

It seems like everytime we are stuck with Bill Welke it doesn’t work out so well for us. (remember Boston series last year?) He’s aweful and I don’t know if its because he’s from Michigan and ya know? Anyways he freaking is aweful.

And now phil walks in a run………………..

i think if you look at phils balls/strikes by number of pitch thrown…you’ll see he lost it after a number of pitches. He came into the game under stress….why leave him out there for another inning and a half?

I can’t say Coke’s performance was unbelievable. I’d just rather believe it hadn’t happened.

g’night folks!

FIRE Leyland!!! Again his horrible game decisions and bull pean management has cost us!!

He put lefties in to face lefties what else do you want. They didn’t do their jobs. He can’t pitch for them. Who did you want to go in? Benoit pitched 2 last night as wll as AA? What would you suggest he should of done? He has to use the guys he has? Believe I’m annoyed but certianly not at him!

Gk, could it be he just put the wrong lefty in the game?? He had three choices. Or was it he left the wrong lefty in the game too long?? Coke threw over 30 pitches for the second time this week. We lost both games. He lost both games. Coke is used to being in and out in under ten pitches. 40 degree weather and his arm could be shot, too.

Coke is garbage vs Righties. Pitching Coke for multiple innings in extra innings is stupidity! Downs or Smyly should have been in as they can get a righty out. Bringing in Rondon in the 8th for his 1st appearance also was dumb. Should have been Downs or Smyly. Leyland can’t manage a bullpen cause he plays favorites. Leyland did nothing to help win a tight game. He was out managed by Wedge and now Yost. Leyland is terrible with in game decisions. How many times does Coke need to blow a game before he realizes that he’s a mop up pitcher or a situational lefty and that’s it?

Gordon’s first slam. Didn’t Trout hit his first slam off Porcello last week?

They were short due to Al injury and Valverde not ready to go back to back. Rondon already used.

No. Coke is not the answer. Unless we are trying to get the game over quickly.

leyland getting his butt handed to him today by ned yost. wish we had a manager that didnt over-manage sometimes. blowing another W for JV. then when the whole world can see Coke loses it, he gets bullheaded and leaves him in. great job bullpen. lets see how many more runs they score this inning.

so why bring valverde up if he cant go 2 days in a row? clearly not ready if he cant pitch consecutive days. i’m all for him being back, but rushing him clearly has its disadvantages.

I think I read earlier that he had pitched the last several days in the minors.

Couple of reasons. It was not a closer situation and he has thrown 4 out of the last 6 days.

again, and product of rushing him back up. this is true about not being a save situation and i didnt expect him, but was just responding to eltigre’s comment about him not being able to go back to back.

Since he was not closing , Benoit was the closer for today. So not coming until a lead. Then Downs, Smyly and Coke were the options.

Ok, my bad. With a walk off no need for a closer

He’s playing the team he has……..that’s all he has. Darin Downs has been horrible with inherited runners. This game was lost when JV came out.

The pitchers, the batters, the ump, the error and the game would be over? If Leyland knew how to manage a bullpen the game would be over. Evan called it and he is one of the few who likes JL.

They better go back to the half-hour version of Tigers Live. With all these losses, who wants to talk, let alone listen.

Options experts. How many does Phil Coke have?? We may need to use one. My dad absolutely was rolling over in his grave when Phil walked that guy with the bases juiced. And Dad would not have said anything to Downs except, “at least you made him beat US!!!!!!!!!!

agreed DOK. coke just has not had it yet this year. but i do hope he can becuase he is such a bulldog, gotta love that in guys. but if it dont clear up soon, i see him going down to Toledo to work it out.

@Stats_MLB “#Tigers are batting .198 with 16 total runs in their last seven games.”

thats because of our GREAT hitting coach! too bad he gets a free ride under leyland’s watch. has anyone ever blossomed once they got to the tigers??? except for the extremely gifted ones like miggy. mcclendon is a joke.

1. Nothing
2. Nothing
3. Nothing

KC has much more speed, a better bullpen, and a pretty good rotation. It’s not going to be as easy as one would have thought. I would have brought Downs in instead of Rondon. Braves will be awfully tough unless the guys are pounding the ball.

so how far of a sample of games needs to be played before all those people who say to stay calm start getting nervous? just wondering how rational people think, because i’m already to that point. 🙂

April 27 2012:10-10 /April 25 2013:10-10

Interesting comparison. Although this season’s Tigers team looks superior to last season’s on paper, I actually feel more anxious about this club. The pen has some nice arms, but I recall the gist of a remark by slowbyrne(?) that they are only throwers, which too often looks to be the case. The rotation velocity issues are bothering me some too. As for the hitting, that is a consistently inconsistent part of the game I think all we need is to see enough ABs and most guys will norm. The jury is still out on who Avila is and Dirks has to step it up and prove he is that hitter from last year and not the minor league version.

I’ll give Bill Welke credit for sticking with his strike zone all day. It sucked, but he stuck with it. He needs his vision checked, seriously. I don’t see how any LH hitter could do anything today.

Between trying to sneak Below through waivers and this entire closer business, this is the FIRST time I’ve ever wondered if Mr. Dombrowski knows what the hell he’s doing.

I’ll amend that. I’ve always had a sneaking doubt about the theory of winning with offense alone.

We have six more at home!!! Not sure we know all the guys flying to Houston when we leave town!!! No panic though we are still sorting things out. Any word on Verlander???

Day to day.

Beck: blister near the nail

We are going to face some really good pitching ths weekend…better than we have face all year, not o mention guys we are unfamiliar with. Could be really ugly!

From Dan Dickerson:
Tigers’ opponents are now 10-17 with bases loaded this year with 2 doubles, triple and two Grand Slams. Tigers are 2-24 with bases loaded…
From Rich:
No wonder these guys put us into bad moods.

Seriously, you put a rookie in the game with a 3-2 lead in the 8th inning? GK, defend Leyland on that one!

Well……..I will ask who did you want him to put in? Benoit was unavailable, as was AA. Nobody wants Coke in there, Valverde was probably unavailable and we all knw how he is in non-save situations. Smyly? In fact I might argue you need to bring him in sometime, why not see what you have?
There’s blame to go around, but you win and lose as a team. Blame infante for his error, without that it woulda been 3-2 at the end of the ninth. Blame JV for not being able to get Billy Butler out and giving up two runs. Blame the hitters for not hitting and not getting a hit after the 5th ( in fact they are batting below .200 the last 7 games that’s an aweful lot of pressure on the pitching staff). Blame the pen. Blame Leyland. But I will always put most of the blame on the players who play the game and don’t perform. I know crazy talk.

Benoit was available. Valverde was not. Benoit would have pitched the ninth had they carried the lead to that point.

Didn’t JL say a day or so ago Rondon would be used in the 6th? Can’t see the analogy with the 8th protecting a one run game.
Anyone but Downs for inherited run situations.
The dumbest thing DD has done recently is not bringing Rondon up last September yet pencilling him in as closer a few months later. Below will likely get up there also in due course.

Maybe I don’t know….but I’m saying because of the situation and how many innings the relievers had to work yesterday there wasn’t much of a choice. I might agree it would be ideal, but in this case not realistic.
