Tigers appear close to decision on Valverde

The Tigers appear to be on the verge of a decision on Jose Valverde. It isn’t necessarily the promotion to Triple-A Toledo many have expected.

Craig Custance, an NHL writer for ESPN, tweeted Monday afternoon that Valverde was on his flight Tuesday afternoon from Tampa to Detroit.  Valverde struck out the side in a scoreless inning for Class A Lakeland Monday night. A source close to Valverde indicated the report on his travels was accurate.

Custance then double-checked with Valverde on his way off the plane.

Normally, a player reporting to Toledo would fly into Detroit Metro Airport. It’s the closest major airport, less than an hour away from Fifth Third Field. However, the Mud Hens are on the road for the next week and a half, and began a four-game series Tuesday in Durham, N.C.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are at home through next Wednesday. Though it’s entirely possible the team would check on Valverde before promoting him to Toledo, Valverde isn’t a pitcher dealing with a health issue.

Though Valverde has been expected to get some time at Toledo before the Tigers made a decision whether to sign him, team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said last week that Valverde wouldn’t necessarily need time at Triple-A Toledo before the Tigers made a decision on him.

Valverde pitched three times in four days for Class A Lakeland, including back-to-back outings Friday and Saturday. He tossed three scoreless innings, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out four.

On Tuesday, Dombrowski referred questions on Valverde to a team spokesperson, who said the team has no move to announce at this time.

If the Tigers opt to add Valverde, they would have to sign him to a Major League contract and add him to the 40-man roster to make room.

The Tigers just made a bullpen move on Tuesday, recalling Bruce Rondon from Triple-A Toledo to take the place of Octavio Dotel, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. However, manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday that Rondon — who was a closer candidate in Spring Training — will not close games starting out.

So far, the decision process on Valverde so far has been independent of any immediate decisions in Detroit.

Does Luis Marte on the DL in Toledo count against our 40 man roster??

The 40-man roster:
A Club’s 40-man roster is a list of all the players currently reserved by a Club at the Major League level. The Major League Rules permit each Club to reserve a maximum of 40 players (excluding players on the 60-day disabled list) at any one time. From September 1 through the end of the season the entire 40-man roster is eligible to play for the Club at the Major League level. From Opening Day through August 31, however, a Club may use only 25 of its 40 players in the Majors.

Yes. He’s on the 40 man roster, but not on the 60 day DL.

Bring him ASAP. If he fails, better now than in september.Of course, once here, he will remain well beyond reasonable expectations.

Once here, he becomes the closer. My flabber would be gasted to see otherwise.

Rich- I think both Valverde and Rondon would do some work in a set up or other bullpen role immediately, but it wouldn’t take long for Leyland to give them ninth inning duties if they were effective

Who said it was going to be easy?
Rondon is up. The knock is he can’t pitch back-to-back. I don’t believe that for one second.
The fact is he did not pitch well in the back end of his back-to-back. That could as easily be co-incidental as it is that physically he can’t do it. People have bad days after all.
NC is next. They are not going to let Andy exacerbate the problems inherent at the bottom of the lineup.

NC has some work to do. Is he hitting .250 at Toledo?? How is his defense anyway?? Can he pinch hit, draw a walk, steal a base, and then score a run?? Quintin Berry is the only OF deserving a call up. Let’s hope we do not have an injury out there in the near future.

QB has a 692 OPS, NC has a 604 OPS…..not knocking the cover off the ball exactly. not like Jordan Lennerton, that guy (70PA) is knocking the cover off the ball. A shame he’s a 1B.

I noticed Lennerton too. Can he play LF?
But QB and NC are SO a lot

no idea if he can play out there. I guess if Vmart when down tomorrow I know who I’d bring up.

I checked at baseball reference. 1B and DH. I was following last year line, can he play 2b?. Yes, he could be an emergency DH

Just to summarize where we have been. First day of the season, Phil Coke gets a two out save. Third day of the season (second game), Phil Coke gets one out, a blown save, and a loss. Soon after that game our manager said, “Get me Valverde.”
Editing done for obvious reasons.

Who would be DFA? Reed or Mercedes?

just FYI light rain will soon be on CoPa. hard to tell where everything is going because the NWS site is having issues displaying it’s radar data right now.

Evan, are you going to make it until tomorrow?? Do we get a twin bill tomorrow??

Nine late starts on the west coast, we come back home and…….late start.
FSD already with a one hour pregame show this year.

This looks like a rainout.

still the nws radar on its website is not available. well it’s loosely available. but either way i am fairly certain this came could have been played. it has always blown me away at the decision making process behind whether these games are played or called rained out

Or they can play waterbaseball like in Boston currently

“Valverde will be with the club in Detroit tomorrow and manager Jim Leyland says he will be the team’s closer.”
@tigers

So, if he flames out, Rondon will hopefully be ready to get a crack. If Rondon doesn’t work out, then we trade for a closer at the deadline?
