Saturday: Tigers at Angels

huntingtonbeachNot a whole lot of at-bats for the Tigers off Garrett Richards. Much more history between Angels hitters and Porcello, much of it surprisingly favoring Porcello. It’ll be interesting to see if the warm weather lends itself to more of the curveball Porcello unleashed in Spring Training.

Remember, today’s game is on FOX, not FS Detroit. If you can’t get near a TV, you can follow along on MLB.com Gameday or listen on Gameday Audio.

Dirks, Peralta, Avila, Infante. Production is needed. Better at bats mandatory. Empowers the whole lineup if some or most of these guys produce.

We have Nationals- Mets ( kind of, we are receiving the Argentinean signal with italian soccer during the breaks) . Watching Yankees- Jays

Porcello. 1 game 261/.320/.348/.668 2 BB/1 SO with Emmel

Pitty the tigers did not trade for Bourjos

You might be better off not watching, ElTigre. 2 on and no outs.

I’ve got Nationals, obviously. No choice.

Well, let’s hope we show up with some life this afternoon. Maybe all that hugging on Torrii’s former teammates, drained the juice from us to them….just kidding. That mess in the outfield last night ticked me off. These games are so important, and, as usual, JL drives me nuts.

Not looking good, already.

Pathetic, already.

Gage.:
Nearly a month out, #Tigers Avisail Garcia (bruised right heel) returned to action on Sat: Five PA’s as DH in extended spring, including SB

Bases loaded and no outs. Score 1-0.

2-0. Bases loaded and still no outs.

apparently Ricky was given way too much time off – we need to stop the bleeding, luckily we have 8 innings to try to make up some of this

hemorrhage, is more like it.

Well, the team has been playing poorly, not producing offensively and they are now demoralized early in the game. Chances of coming back in this one are remote. Boy does Ricky P ever need to have a strikeout pitch. Just seems like he can’t get the ball by hitters.

Disgusting! Just got home.

on national TV, no less. How embarassing.

bring in drew, jim.

Beck says he is already warming

With better defense would we have a different game of were the grounders well placed or hard?

Soft as could be.

They were weird infield hits. Sure, with a faster infield we may have been able to get to the ball faster, but small ball is not our game.

Thanks.

Okay one inning in and I’ve had enough!

AND way to go, jim. you gave the kid too much time off

apparently I was way overly optimistic – guess I won’t spend too much time watching baseball today…

National TV! That accounts for it. When the spotlight is on we have had trouble playing properly.
Well, everyone will be revisiting the opportunity that DD had to trade Ricky in the spring.
Very sorry for the kid. But he sure has trouble managing hitters. Even with the 94 or 95 and the sink and the curve.
Putting Smyly in is dumb. Other than the fact you can put him in the rotation and start him 5 days from now.

Glad I can’t get the game on TV.
Time to do something else today. It is embarrassing, to be sure. And we can expect to see our hitters roll over and add to the embarrassment.

Is it safe to say Rick didn’t have it today? Maybe skipping his turn didn’t help? He did pitch a couple innings to close out a game. The way the Tigers have been hitting there is little hope of making up 9 runs. So much for a nice west coast trip.

Kept Rick in too long, imo. I would have yanked him before Trout came up.

3.99 6-6 285/.327/.445/.772 with 6 or more days of rest. His best numebers

I just wanted to mention something obvious concerning Octavio Dotel: In the 2 outtings where he has just gotten hammered (April 7, 19) he wasn’t throwing his fastball – at all. He’s traditionally thrown his fastball for ~79% of his pitches. In both those games he was throwing his cutter and tossing a few splitters in there. The velocity on them seemed fine.

thought this comment would get more of a response. did i already miss this conversation?

His cutter is a secondary pitch that sets up the fastball. with no fastball – cutter gets eaten up. Tossing his slider in there every 5 pitches or so isn’t getting it done. Without the fastball – he doesn’t whiff anybody.

Beck;
Correction: Would have been a 3-run 1st inning if one of 1st three singles had been fielded.
Me: get a real SS

Wow, just checked in on Gameday. No game today, hey? Oh well. First time a blackout has ever been a good thing. I’ll look at that first inning later when it comes online.
At first glance, it sure would appear that Jim knows how to wreck a pitcher. He’ll probably apologize all over himself.

He did one of those “Valverde’s” on him.

Looking at the Twitter feed, it appears there could have been better infield play?

imo, yes.

Yes … Infante could have got to one and JP could have got to another. Only Trumbo’s line drive and Trout’s GS was hit hard. He had Harris struck out and took a step to the dugout but the ump missed it because he missed his target and hung it. Then a broken bat flare, a dribbler down the line and another Bourjos chopper. At that point JL has to go get Rick. He was over 40 pitches by then and becoming frustrated and gassed. Instead, JL left him in to be exposed and embarrassed with the one mistake he made in the inning to Trout. I am not the biggest RP fan but I felt bad for him today. That was just Bad VooDoo and I have never seen anything like it.

I haven’t seen today’s yet, but there have been other Porcello+infield meltdowns.
I hear he didn’t have his curveball. Worked on it all winter and spring then got sat down for days on end.
I blame it on Jeff Daniels for sitting behind the Tigers dugout.

They run ADS on Gameday?????

advertisements

At least the background ads was scaled down. iI used t take the whole screen. I zoomed to get rid of it

Yes,always.Sometimes they are still on when the game is on again

The announcers mentioned on the broadcast that somebody was sticking pins in a Rick Porcello doll. The bottom line is JL shoud not have let him pitch to Trout. He hung him out to dry. Nothing good was going to come from that.

At least someone came to play

Neil Diamond shows up in Fenway Park to sing “Sweet Caroline” in the 8th inning. Pretty awesome.

While the Tiger game was on. I guess they figured it was more entertaining than the Tigers.

twas about the time i started to scream “why am i not listening to this game on the detroit tigers radio network!?!”

Pretty impressive job by Smyly. The Angels’ confidence must have been sky high and to handle a RHB lineup like he did? Very nice.
Scosia had no problem batting his RHB against a RHP.

Tigers getting a bit unlucky today. i’m confident greg will find it possible to find 3 good things about this game.

Smyly, Smyly, Smyly

Like the Tigers, their RHB bat better against RHP than against LHP.
On the other hand, they had only 8 AB LHB vs LHP. They had a lot of SW lat year
He knows the stats and play by them

Well just turned it back on its in the 9th ……just looked like they laid over and took it. How embaressing.

don kelly wasn’t a slouch today

So far, lots of positives about the series versus the Angels. Goodly number of Tigers fans at the games. Nice, safe venue. Pleasant people in attendance. Great weather. And as far as the results go…Well, no Tigers got hurt, just very outplayed and embarassed.

I’ve got and idea. Let’s try Rick in the closer role and Drew as a starter. Remember last year, the White Sox rolled over. How many runs in 4 days?

3 in the last 43 innings

2 shutouts in three games. 1 run in the other. And believe it or not, they remain second in MLB in avg and third in OBP. 7th in runs

victor could have made a difference today, tho

Nightmare on elm street.

Dear Lloyd,
They gotta score a few runs to win a game – at least most of the time.

At CoPa or at a pitcher friendly park like LAA , they cant go for the fences.
They are slow, way too slow , three hits and they got a runner in third.( 8th inning?)
They need to find the gaps like Cabrera most of the time or Victor in 2011( he was told to do so by Miguel) to take the runners home.

1.Smyley
2.Two double plays.
3. No one hurt.

Ouch!

porcello’s era from today: 121.4
– matt yost (a friend of mine)

Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of Rick being bombed by Texas and in that game he allowed nine runs in one inning +. Talk about deja vu. Both were his third start of the season. I tuned into the game just as Trout was coming up for his second AB. My first TV broadcast of the year so I watched it to the bitter end. Did he stretch out Smyly for a starting assignment soon?? Between Rick and Drew who faced the Braves the most during spring training??

I don’t think I have ever seen a first inning like that one and really no one to blame but bad luck.
The two cuts to Fenway for Neil and the homer the only highlights of the day.
Boy is Victor anxious at the moment with Miggs also having difficulty at the moment laying off away breaking pitchers.
