Thursday: Tigers at Mariners

bikesignThe only starter with a day off after Wednesday’s marathon is 37-year-old Torii Hunter. Don Kelly starts in right field in his place. Hunter is the only Tiger with more than a couple at-bats against M’s starter Hisashi Iwakuma, but he’s just 2-for-10 with two strikeouts off him.

Leyland debated whether to rest one of his middle infielders, but stuck with them.

“I wanted to post my lineup with [Brayan] Pena catching, but I didn’t have the heart,” Leyland joked.

TIGERS

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (0-for-1 off Iwakuma)
  2. Andy Dirks, LF (0-for-1 off Iwakuma)

JV should be able to manage this lineup.
By the way, Justin Verlander is 3rd leading pitcher with strikeouts thus far this season.
Not in the Majors; not in the AL; but 3rd on the TEAM behind Max and Sanchez.

that’s incredible!

This is directed to Mark P who commented on the previous thread: Sure, glad to hook up with a fellow Tigers fan. I don’t yet know which game in DC I’m going to, perhaps both, and I’m getting my tickets later. Just keep reading here and when the time comes, I’ll announce (? sounds like there should be a fanfare) where I’ll be at Nationals Park.

I don’t feel like we’ve seen the real JV yet.

Watching the game last night, I was amazed at how poor of an offensive team Seattle has, especially on the infield. Ackley, Ryan and I forgot who played 3B, all play great D, but really had no chance vs. Scherezer.

because it’s worth repeating: Brayan Pena was marvelous last night. Kudos to management and scouting for signing him and JL for putting him in the situation.
.
Obviously Max’s performance and Torii’s slide at home were awesome too.
.
Put it in the books: that was a Game of the Year candidate!

Does a 2-1 win in a 14 inning game with a 9-3-2 relay for the final out get us on a roll?? We will find out soon enough. Verlander on the bump. Play ball. Go Tigers!!!!

Speaking of Ks, The Tigers as a team are #2 in MLB, right behind the Red Sox. Also, there are 3 Tigers in the top 33 pitchers. In order, they are Max, Sanchez and JV.

DOK, I posted the starters for the Angels’ series because of the rain postponment with the Twins yesterday and their day off today. It was unclear as a result who was slotted to pitch. Also. I’m excited about seeing the Tigers in person this weekend as well as watching batting practice.

Good that we will have an eyewitness giving reports.!!! Thanks for the info on the pitching order. We miss Vargas.

The Tigers are 17th as a team in SO.Lat week they were 28th. And remain 1 rst in AVG but fell to third in OBP. Not time to worry yet, it is just a correction They are going back to normal

Getting a little squeezed I think. Jv needs to keep his pitch count in control…he needs to pitch deep

What the highest temperature for a Tiger game this season??

At home probably 55 degrees. Otherwise whatever it was in Oakland. The weather otherwise has been miserable.
.
Tigers going quickly and quietly. Meanwhile Justin has to strike everyone out so pitch count climbing. This has always bothered me with him.

All these announcers local and national drooling over the A’s and their record. Let’s see 4 against the mariners…..6 against the Astros ……3 against the angels….three against us. We are the only quality competition they have faced. Not saying they are not good but pretty weak schedule so far.

JV ,7 innings, easy

71 pitches through 4 innings isn’t good at all, he may be able to get through 7 maybe, but he has got to be more efficient especially after a 14 inning game the night before.

Let’s have the bottom of the order score first today!!!

Honestly here in the 5th nobody thought it was important to cover 1st? Pretty bad baseball..Prince, JV?

JV was supposed to do it

Nice double play. Now one more quick out.

Nope better to walk him???

I’m not sure what’s up with these guys. They have scored 1 run for their 2 aces.
Iwakuma can’t be this good.
Gotta give JL credit yesterday for making Peralta bunt and for pinch running for Victor.

Look for a big fly.

Can anyone on this team get a hit let alone score a run? Geez

Ph for Avila

Matt Capps has been known to go wild.

This is the big inning for JV. If they score we lose.

That’s too bad.
BTW–I gave some credit to JL yesterday but I also think he is so damn stubborn. BV warming up again today??????

Do we have anyone warming up???

QS . No RS

Run support

Duh…..running on 3 hours of sleep.

Alex did nothing to block the plate or make it difficult. Too bad it would be 1-0.

Nice throw by Dirks. Looked to be in tme. Why did Avila not block the dish?

He remembers what happened to Posey.

Rally in the 8th.

Just curious. Was Phil Coke ready to pitch when Seager PH for Ryan??? Endy Chavez was the next hitter.

3-4-5 in the ninth.

How is Hunter not pinch hitting for Dirks in the 8th? Fire Leyland terrible manager.

Inverted splits . He remains Coke

We have some holes in this lineup right now. Dirks, Infante and Avila. Infante has stopped hitting. VMart swinging pretty well. Don’t think Dirks will last as a regular.
Worried about Avila. Satisfied with Omar. But he can hit better.

Holes in the line up plus a big hole at manager. Leyland just got out coached by Wedge! That’s sad!!!

You really think so? I was kinda surprised torri didn’t pinch hit, but let’s face it nobody on this team doing well the last few days. I guess I just wouldn’t go as far as outmaaged. Outplayed and outpitched yes.

They’ve all looked pretty lethargic the lst few days. Pretty disapointing all around today.

Ya I think so. The guys were tired and you could tell. When you aren’t hitting your manager needs to make a move or 2 to help you out. Wedge did that pinch hitting Seager. Leyland needed to put on a hit and run or something. Instead he filled a lineup card and did nothing. There’s no excuse for Torii not hitting for Dirks. Even Tuiasosopo would have been a better fit than Dirks. Dirks is beyond struggling. Yesterday he gave Dirks a 1st pitch hit and run and it worked. Why not try the same again today? But all this is coming from a guy who thinks Leyland is a great clubhouse manager but one of the worst in game managers of all time

Did I see a Tigers fan get out of the way for Smoak to make a play on Miggy’s pop in the stands?

Yup you did. Morons

4-2 on the trip. 5-3 on the road. Not bad

Sure glad they don’t have Fister. A lot of teams will come to grief against the Mariners pitching.

More likely to be a Mariner fan who bought a Tiger hat or whatever!!!

Maybe he/she didn’t want to get hit by the ball.

The spark plug has been “missing”: AJ was 1 for 11 the last 2 games.
The engine wouldn’t run right.

These guys weren’t going to hit .380 forever, so maybe we’ve gotten that out of the way.
It’s odd that Felix and Justin both pitched in losing games.
I’m starting to wonder about young Mr. Avila, or should I say, starting to talk about it now.
First time I ever saw that roof close (or open).
That looked like a pretty tired out ballclub today.
So far, Dirks is missing out on a golden opportunity to grab the LF job as his own.
Taking the first two series of a west coast trip is pretty good.

I thought maybe Jim would put Torii in there to pinch hit, but, no. A sweep would have been nice.

1. Only one walk for the M’s; we cut our SO’s down a lot;
2. Another clean inning for Coke; and the game was still in reach, so good pitching did count.
3. JV gave us a chance to win; that’s all you can ask of a starter.

Hitting has gone icey all of a sudden; we couldn’t keep the maddening pace; I just wish it had been a gradual cooling off. Avila, Dirks, and V-Mart need to really get going. Starting pitchers have been splendid. Two out of three from every road team means great success for our team. Good night all!

Tigers vs LH starting pitching. Our record is 1-2 with one of the losses a shut-out started by CC. However, we pounded both Buerhle and Anderson scoring six and seven runs. Not bad. And all the runs were scored against these two starters. The Buerhle game was the one we blew the 6-1 fifth inning lead and lost the game.

When was the first game in 2012 started by a lefty where we were able to score six or more runs?? JULY FIFTH!!! Remember how we were spinning in neutral the first half of last season?? Well, against LH starters we had several long streaks. First, we started the season by winning six straight (3-2, 5-2, 5-2, 3-2, 3-1, 4-3). Then we lost TEN in a row. We went a few days short of two months without besting a single LH starter. Now we move along to 7-4 thru 7-8 and we WON five straight against lefties!!! Delmon was blazing hot during those five games. And if I remember right Prince made two lefty relievers homer victims, too.

So in 2013 will the top of our line-up just deter opposing managers from juggling their rotation to start lefties against us?? Next up will be CJ Wilson.

Won two road series. Does having Torii Hunter on the team help?? Sure does. Now on to the “Big A”. The Angels are struggling. Is this a trap series?? Just focus and get another win. Go Tigers.
