Sunday: Tigers at A’s

Regular lineup for the Tigers. The A’s have Jed Lowrie batting cleanup, Seth Smith batting third and Josh Reddick down to the sixth spot. The matchups certainly favor moving Smith up.

You can follow along this afternoon on Gameday, watch live on FS Detroit or MLB.TV, or listen on 97.1 FM or Gameday Audio. I’m finishing a weekend off, but I’ll be back on coverage Tuesday from Seattle.

Yesterday Verlander pitched around Seth Smith who had hit a homer off him in the past. Today Seth moves to third in the line up because he has three homers against Anibal!! Do you think he will get walked today??

Blue Jays need a shortstop. Santiago for Santos??? And eat some salary?

Wasn’t Santos the guy that Raburn and Miggy hit the homers off in the 9th inning when he pitched for the WSox?

Izturis plays a decent SS.

sounds like a good fit

Bad AB for Miguel

Miggy is not his normal self right now. If you thought Hunter’s base running was suspect what the heck was Prince Fielder doing? He should have been on 3rd and VMart may have had a double.
Dirks is making me wonder about Boesch.

Seems like Vmart can’t get a break. He is certainly hitting the ball well but right at somebody. Dirks hit better in the 2nd spot with Miggy behind him rather than 6th with Peralta behind him.

Sorry Andy. You’re gonna have to learn how to hit lower in the order!
Anybody else having trouble with the MLB site?

Rogoski has a good article about VMart and his Babip at Blessyouboys

Boy is Sanchez getting squeezed.

Sanchez – 4 innings and 74 pitches.

With a good ump, he goes 7 or 8

Cuidado Anibal. Leadoff triple and the heart of the line-up follows up dry. Could be a lift here for the A’s. Throw some strikes and get that leadoff hitter.

One more inning

Porcello gets a chance at going three innings??

This batter and call the bullpen

QS ,going deep. That how you fix a bullpen

I would not consider this an ideal time for Ricky to come in but I sure hope he is able to shut these guys down.

WOW! I can used to this. On fire!

I forgot the “get”

What is it with Porcello relieving? Were they going to skip his turn this week anyway? Is this trying him out as a closer like someone has suggested? Does it put Smyly in the rotation? Would this have been a good time with a 10-1 lead to give BV one more chance? Did the announcers have any scoop on all this? I don’t listen because I am deaf and my cochlear implant has trouble picking up voices from my computer. Thanks anyone who can answer my questions. There are enough of them. LOL

He’s being skipped. But I still think he would make a great closer. Dennis Eckersley struggled as a starter and became a HOF closer.

Yes Porcello’s turn s being skipped due to a day off ths week and one next week. I don’t think this is trying him as a closer nor was it illuded to in the broadcast. I think the end has just been that crappy and they needed someone. And there was no mention of Villareal at all, but I’m sure they wanted Ricky in to keep him sharp, but that’s just my opinion and Leyland trusts him more than the rest of the yahoos in the pen.

Well, they warned us about this team’s potential. And we’re still only at about 75% capability. Keep getting quality starts like yesterday and today, and we will be alright indeed. So much good in this game, but I’ll point out three things that really worked well for me today:
1. Scoring first and early; I mean when you are up by one after two batters, it really
sets the tone for your starting pitcher. Not only that, we scored in five different innings today. Great job!
2. Sanchez kept his cool, even as he was being hosed. This “cool” kept him in the game for a solid seven, and allowed Rick to pitch a pressure free eighth and ninth.
3. A-Jax’s maturation as a bonafide major league star. And on top of that, a 37 year old veteran “starring” right behind him. What a 1-2 combo.

Kudos to Biggie, Jhonnie, Victor, and Andy for RBI support. Nice solid defense again. This team is starting to stun me with it’s offensive potential. Good night all. On to the rainy city.

Wait till Cabby and Marty start to hit like they can. Of course others will cool off but if we can mainly have a few guys hitting that will be a huge improvement over past years.
BTW, Andy and Avila have to have better at bats and provide some production.

What a solid game offensively, defensively, starting (QS) pitching and finishing! I think Rick would make a solid closer as he gets ahead in the count, works well the 1st time through the order and shows he has poise and mental discipline.

We’re saying the same thing at the same time, Jay. See below.

Taking two of three from a hot team in their own yard is a feat that deserves kudos. That was a very good weekend overall, and four inches (Santiago) from being a sweep.
The first key to the bullpen is starters going seven, and Sanchez provided that.
We have much better baserunning at the top of the order than we have had, and Brookens arm must be getting tired.
I expected Porcello today just to get him some work in. He looked good too. Rick being a closer has come up here before and, while I don’t think today was a clue to anything, I still think he has a chance to be a good one if needed. He’d be free to dial up his fastball and his sinker can induce rally killing DPs. He’s also cool under pressure. Not counting the potential of Rondon, who in the entire organization would be better? Again, just for discussion; I don’t expect this to happen.

The pen needs fixing. Expecting starters to go 7 innings each outing is unrealistic. For simplicity’s sake, just averaging out a162 game regular season with a 5 man rotation would mean each starter would throw 224 plus innings That is not a sustainable premise.

Man, our offense is really starting to click with the two seasoned pros book-ending the two young stars.
If you think we have problems with our bullpen, spare a thought for the Cardinals. Their starters currently lead MLB with a collective 1.82 ERA. Shame their relievers are going 6.09ERA for currently last in MLB.

Yeah, on the other extreme the Braves’ pen leads MLB with a 1.30 ERA and their closer, Kimbrel, has 6 saves in the same number of opportunities. Unfortunately, the Tigers are near the bottom in pen ERA at 5.59 and are the second worst in blown saves.

i expected the group of relievers we have to have ups-and-downs. it’s a shame the majority are down right now, but as i’ve said before – it’s good timing to do it NOW. The other parts of the team are overcoming their issues – we’re winnings series. if the pen doesnt fix itself in the first quarter – then maybe rondon and valverde will make a difference. If that doesn’t work: trade deadline.

with that being said — sure dont think BV should be going back out there w/o a trip back to AAA. If he goes out and is good (i.e. jeff jones worked with him) what has JL done but saved some money and carbon emissions by flying the fellas (luke P from AAA) to the other teams?

just won 3 series in a row – can’t be too sour fellas.

By the numbers , they were expected to be 8-4. But we know they could be 9-3. And losing the interdivisional series was not the best outcome

IP/G 2012/2013/career
Verlander 7.2/6.1/6.7
Scherzer: 5.9/5.5/5.9
Porcello: 5.7/5.2/5.8

MLB avg 5.9

The Tigers leaded MLB in CG with 9 last year tied with Cincinnati
JV pitched 238.1 and Sanchez in both leagues 195.2
But Scherzer 187.2 , Fister 161.2 and Porcello 176.2

They cant go 7 every game but they need to go 6 and sometimes farther.
195 innings is a reasonable expectation.

And even that way, this bullpen doest not guarantee anything.Tigers bullpen: last year. 10th in IP 9th in saves. 10th in ERA. They are not getting younger. Dotel and Benoit. They are injury prone: Al2, his slider is destroying his arm but without it , he is not even average. They dont have the body or the mind to be consistent:Villareal. They are s not a good fit, Coke,he induces a lot of grounder and with this defense and he can get RHB out so he is a LOOGY and nothing else. The same goes with Porcello out of the pen,SO or FB are the only good thing with this team.
Smyly and Downs have been good so far.

started affect by weather + bullpen stumbling + offense on fire = leading the central, 3 of 4 series won. I’ll take it.

started == starters

you beat me to it Evan – our starters for the most part have been terrific and are getting better each start, which is all you can ask for. Our hitters are doing what was predicted so let’s ride it as long as it lasts – Jhonny seems to be determined, AJax is on fire and Torii as well. Of course Miggy and Prince – Miggy has not been flexing the muscle much but Fielder has been. Fun watching this team produce, and if the pen is struggling then I am glad right now our offense is providing enough buffer. I am not much of a stat watcher, but Detroit is leading the AL in hitting average, on base percentage, 2nd in runs scored – and first in fielding average!!

“For all the talk about Tigers closer situation, there have been 17 blown saves in 9th inning or later in MLB this year. Tigers have 1.”

For innings pitched per game by starters, I’d be more interested in the median number minus in-game injuries. Seems like that would provide a better grasp of how many arms usually come out of the pen most days.

the number would be robust to outliers and statistical distribution

I can go that deep but the Tigers had 90 QS. So they went 6 or more in 56 % of the games
9 CG
7 innings or more:
Verlander 21 times /33
Scherzer: 11 times/32
Sanchez:3 with the Tigers/9 with the Marlins/31
Fister.10 times/26
Porcello: 6 but none after July./31
51 games: 7 or more

And the relievers pitched 420 games
All but Valverde went multiple innings 119 times

I saw this one too: Knobler:
“For all the talk about Tigers closer situation, there have been 17 blown saves in 9th inning or later in MLB this year. Tigers have 1.”
Isn’t it 1 blown out of 2 ninth inning opportunities? What does this even mean, other than we’ve won 6 of 7 games by more than 3 runs? What did I miss? That we’ll only have 18 total save opportunities this year?
I’m too old for all these numbers. 🙂

Dotel had the blown save in the 8th and Smyly in the 7th. So it was not the closer who failed. Coke had the sole blown save in the 9th
They have 2 saves in 5 save op. 40 % MLB 72%

Per MLB, Smyly, Coke and Dotel have all blown save opportunities. I think if you read Knobler’s comment closely, it refers specifically to closer situations.

That being the case, there actually were not a lot of ninth inning or later chances for saves. So, what did Knobler say that was meaningful?

Yeah. That we’re going to win a bunch of 8-3 ballgames? Oh well, whatever, right?
Speaking of, the Nationals have three guys with closer experience and it’s not going well.

BJs designate Wells for assignment.

Odd. Casper could still help us, although Tuiasosopo has done nothing wrong. Still working on his routes, though.

Morosi and baseball prospect have post about the unusual behavior of the Jays in waiver. No team with WS pretenses goes to waivers in April
I guess they are accommodating the new SS

Just hear about Boston.I hope it was an accident and not a terrorist attack

That doesn’t sound like an accident, my friend.

There is a suspect under custody.
