Saturday: Tigers at A’s

Matt Tuiasosopo and Brayan Pena get the start against A’s left-hander Brett Anderson, though Tuiasosopo is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts off Anderson from his days in Seattle. The bigger changes are on the Oakland side, where Coco Crisp and Yoenis Cespedes are both out after leaving last night’s extra-inning game.

UPDATE: Cespedes was just placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left hand. Michael Taylor has been called up to take his place on the roster.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (1-for-7, 3 K’s off Anderson)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (7-for-16, 2 HR, 7 RBIs off Anderson)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (3-for-10, double, 3 walks off Anderson)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (0-for-3, walk off Anderson)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (2-for-4, walk off Anderson)
  6. Matt Tuiasosopo, LF (0-for-7, 4 K’s off Anderson)
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS (1-for-7, walk off Anderson)
  8. Omar Infante, 2B (1-for-5, double, 2 RBIs off Anderson)
  9. Brayan Pena, C (1-for-5, RBI, 3 K’s off Anderson)

P: Justin Verlander

  1. John Jaso, DH (2-for-10, 3 K’s off Verlander)
  2. Chris Young, CF (1-for-3, 2 K’s off Verlander)
  3. Josh Reddick, RF (2-for-15, double, 6 K’s off Verlander)
  4. Brandon Moss, 1B (1-for-8, walk, 4 K’s off Verlander)
  5. Seth Smith, LF (1-for-13, HR, 3 walks, 4 K’s off Verlander)
  6. Josh Donaldson, 3B (2-for-11, walk, 2 K’s off Verlander)
  7. Eric Sogard, 2B (0-for-5 off Verlander)
  8. Derek Norris, C (0-for-7, 4 K’s off Verlander)
  9. Andy Parrino, SS

P: Brett Anderson

They sure are trying to get Victor going. He’s not having much puck-luck either.
Hey BV didn’t throw much last night–he should be ready. He can drop his ERA if he can throw 1 inning and ONLY give up 5 runs.
1 2/3 IP: 6 hits; 9 ER, 5 BB 2 SB and a WP. A line for the ages that one.
Seriously though–he has been bad and the potential to be “good” is not really there. He’s like loading a catapult with rocks in the middle ages and storming the castle. Kinda reminds me of the old saying that “if you throw enough feces on the wall some of it will stick”. Not a mantra for a championship team.

Relievers are so inconsistent…look at the Nationals, with three closers and yet their bullpen has the worst ERA in the majors so far.

Thanks, El Tigre. That was a hanging slider that fooled the batter last night for BV. Wonder if the cold weather has knocked down the velocity for a lot of pitchers. The mechanics is more important to correct. 94 mph with good mechanics does okay in MLB.

None of these guys have ever hit JV well at all.
This team needs their ACE to mount that hill and make a statement.

no comment

iott. Porcello to be skipped. He will be available out of the bullpen

When did Iott say this?? It would indicate that the Mariners will get Fister, Scherzer and Verlander. Then the Angels get Sanchez, Porcello and Fister. Does that sound right??

Detroit Tigers shorthanded in bullpen; Rick Porcello available to pitch in relief due to upcoming off-day

Keating too:
Rick Porcello getting loose in OAK. He’ll be skipped in rotation because of days off. Available as reliever today

gotta get a win today. cool hand luke needs to replace BV until his mechanics are fixed.

The curse of DY.. No one can hit from the 5th spot

Cabrera’s defensive play has been lauded recently by the opposition’s announcers i.e., Jays and Athletics.

JV time lets get it done

Thanks everyone on getting me caught up on the latest Tiger news!!!!

Will the bottom of the order add on a run???

Big bomb from Jhonny.

I was in the other room on the phone and missed all the action. Tigers up 5-1!!!

Zeroes JV. Zeroes!!!!!!

Hey curley fries for all you curley fry gals and guys!!!!!

If Verlander does not go beyond the 5th. There will be a huge problem

Well our top of the 4th was nice……………but JV very inefficent. He needs to go deep. Quick outs.

although I will say that ump cost him probably near 12 or more pitches this inning

Maybe I need to go back to my room.

if JV can start pitching better….he might last until the 7th. Then I put in porcello and let him pitch the rest of the game. I think it’s a formula for success.

He is supposed to be available for only one inning. Two days of rest. Would the equivalent of a bullpen session. Kind off

No more JV-BP batteries. Both bad games without Avila

Two more innings in the tank

Back to back rbi doubles!!! Good job everyone!!!

JV and BP=two QS. Not bad. Now will it be ABC or ACB or APB???? What else could it be??

Our relievers are known to the opposition as the “Tigers’ beleaguered bullpen.”

Porcello is up in the pen, with Coke.

Gk was right. It is the walks. Now let’s see if Coke can put out the fire. Their LHBs are coming up. Coke to the rescue!!!

The pen the pen the pen……….geez. Honestly something has got to give. They just don’t have anyone who can be consistent. I guess they are consistently inconsistent I guess.

National starters have allowed 20 ER in 64 1/3 innings. Washington’s ‘pen has given up 24 ER in 35 2/3 innings.

Three teams have a worse ERA: Yankees, Nationals and Marlins

Three teams with worse WHIP

Coke pitches to two lefties in the eighth. Porcello finish it?? Benoit the ninth. Smyly had four 1-2-3 innings in one afternoon. I doubt the other six guys have had four more put together!!! Can anyone disprove that outlandish claim!!

good thing we brought the bats to the park today, huh fellas?

And it still probably won’t be enough. Our pen sucks and not one of them can throw a strike. Walk em all boys

Actually it was the curley fry bats!!!!!!!!!

Light a candle.

I’ve got a whole fireplace going. These guys scare the crap out of me!

And by that I mean our pitchers.

Is Benoit out of gas??? Beginning to feel blessed that I can’t see this on TV. Just retired and I think I might go back to work!!!!!!!!!!

Did not run out of gas, but obviously had trouble throwing strikes. Out of 36 pitches only 18 were for strikes.

This ump is aweful….. but so are our pitchets.

Oh, my.

A W is a W, no matter how

Well at least the ump was awful for both teams. The couple behind the plate were sure annoying. Benoit looked great after the walk in the ninth. Tigers win!

that lady with the little stuffed animal she was waving — was driving me nuts like a steering wheel in my pants.

Wow, those Oakland hitters. They wouldn’t swing the bats, taking fat fastballs in 2-0 and 3-1 counts. When they did swing, they usually missed. It’s a good thing Benoit discovered his changeup late.
We need to keep in mind that other teams will try this and adjust our pitching approach accordingly. It’s all about running up our starters pitch counts. I hope this is a temporary situation because these games begin to resemble those Red Sox-Yankees epics.

quote of the day came from craig monroe in the FSN postgame show: “you hang’em, we bang’em”.
Season is long – we have good arms in the pen. guys with the stuff. Right now they’re having command issues (BV is a different story) – and to be honest, I’d rather it now then in October.

Benoit kept his composure in a high pressure situation and closed it out strong.

JV had his velocity back… I thought it was interesting how Brooks said the fastest ball he threw was a 2seamer! is that weird?

Sunday against Oakland and the bullpen options are Porcello, Dotel, Villarreal and Coke. Oops forgot Don. Go Tigers!!!!

why not downs or smyly? they didn’t pitch today!

is smyly at 45 and downs at 30, friday night, mean they are unavailable sunday?

So far when Smyly has gone over 40 pitches, he then has gotten either two or three days off. That’s the right thing to do. Downs has pitched five times using 24, 16, 23, 30, and 30 bullets.
We are two games short of the halfway mark for games this month. DS, DD, JB, and AA have high pitch counts. Up to now, Downs has passed Leyland’s tests. He has pitched well. Absolutely no good reason to pitch him tomorrow. Tomorrow would be a good day for Porcello to get a nice little workout and save the bullpen.

That’s a good lefty we roughed up today. Only two games but so far Tuiasosopo and Pena have contributed with the bats when they have started. That’s the way it should work.

Benoit was good. But we really need to find someone in our bullpen that intimidates the opposition with the ability to have hitters doubt themselves. Interesting seeing Ricky P warm up late.
Shame to have wasted a Max Effort yesterday. Those kinds of games need to be won, somehow—anyhow.

We had six chances to add on one run. That’s all we needed.

Tigers have a chucker in Erie by the name, no kidding, WILL STARTUP!

Is he a starter or reliever???

Hey Guys!Quick update. I was in the hospital from 9 this morning until 7:30 this evening receiving another 3 pints of blood. That makes 14 in 3 weeks. The bleeding is just about gone. No Three things from Fri or sat, but back on the prowl Sunday. I did see both games, but I’m just worn out.

Sorry Greg. Hope you feel better soon.

Thar’s tough Greg. Get your energy back. We will be waiting.
Go Tigers.
— Bob

Rubber game of the series. Go get’em Greg!!!

8 games for Quentin? Should be 25 minimum. Intent to injure, plus the fact that Greinke is out for a couple of months should factor into the penalty IMO.

I agree. He should sit as long as ZG is out, and then some. He’ll appeal, though, and get less than 8 games which is a joke. Oh, and I remember Will Startup when he was with the Whitecaps definately! MiLB had him competing in the coolest name contest a few years ago.

“Octavio Dotel is not going to rush coming back from an injured elbow.”

I wonder if the Athletics will grind today. Certainly understood that approach against dominant pitchers like Max and JV in order to get into the Tigers’ “beleaguered” pen. But that team usually scores a lot of runs and grinding is a tough way to accomplish that.

The A’s lead all of baseball in drawing walks, so be sure they will continue to grind out AB’s.

Yeah, they lead in a lot of offensive categories. Very powerful club. They can swing it.

The decision on Quentin’s appeal will be today. The Padres play in LA tomorrow. MLB could actually punish him by making him play this week. I think I already posted this, but I think 50 games is about right. Same as PED use. The fights, however, draw attention and viewers.

Does anyone remember the last time a Tiger player charged the mound, other than the Sheffield-Carmona scrap in 2008?

No, but I remember when Dave Rozema tried to defend himself🙂

Regular RHP lineup for today

Alineación de hoy vs. OAK: Jackson 8, Hunter 9, Cabrera 5, Fielder 3, Martinez DH, Dirks 7, Peralta 6, Avila 2, Infante 4. Sanchez comienza.

Mayo, I got curious about the BB total for the Athletics. It seems the Tigers issued 9 of their total of 48 or nearly 20%, over the last 2 games. The Tigers are virtually responsible for the Athletics taking the lead in BBs. You could well be right about the grinding continuing.

Beat Oakland. Win the Series. Beginning today we should face four RH starters in a row. Will this be a chance for Avila and Dirks to get in a groove?? V-Mart, too?? Time will tell. So far we have faced three LH starters and KO’d two of them. That CC guy shut us out. We are scrapping against LH starters and it will always help, if Tuiasosopo and Pena contribute when they are inserted in the line up. However, the key against lefty starters will remain attacking from the top with AJ, Torii, and Miguel.

This web site definitely has all of the information I wanted about this subject and didn’t know who to ask.
