Saturday: Tigers vs. Yankees

Yankees are starting Phil Hughes today, in case you hadn’t heard. As you can see from a lot of the splits below, that’s not the greatest of matchups for the Tigers. Ramon Santiago, 0-for-7 off Hughes), gets his first start of the year in place Omar Infante, 0-for-4 off Hughes.

Today will be the first of back-to-back starts for Santiago, whom Jim Leyland plans to play at shortstop tomorrow in place of Jhonny Peralta, given Peralta’s struggles against CC Sabathia. Leyland’s remarks when asked about Santiago and any progress this year following winter ball would suggest he’s trying to get a spark.

“I haven’t really seen the effects of that so far,” Leyland said of Santiago, who went 6-for-24 with four walks, a home run and eight RBIs in an injury-shortened Spring Training. “That’s why he’s playing the next couple games, to see what he’s got. He’s a big part of our team and has been in the past, did not have a good year last year, started out OK in winter ball but did not finish real good. So we’ll have to just see how that plays out.”

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (2-for-14, 5 K’s off Hughes)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (3-for-10, 5 K’s off Hughes)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (9-for-23, 4 HR, 9 RBIs off Hughes)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (1-for-7, HR off Hughes)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (6-for-18 off Hughes)
  6. Andy Dirks, LF (1-for-3 off Hughes)
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS (10-for-21 off Hughes)
  8. Alex Avila, C (1-for-8, 4 K’s off Hughes)
  9. Ramon Santiago, 2B (0-for-7, 3 K’s off Hughes)

P: Max Scherzer

  1. Brett Gardner, CF (0-for-11, 2 walks, 4 K’s off Scherzer)
  2. Robinson Cano, 2B (3-for-16, HR, 5 K’s off Scherzer)
  3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B (4-for-17, 2 doubles, HR off Scherzer)
  4. Travis Hafner, DH (7-for-19, HR, 4 RBIs off Scherzer)
  5. Vernon Wells, LF (0-for-5 off Scherzer)
  6. Brennan Boesch, RF
  7. Francisco Cervelli, C (1-for-5 off Scherzer)
  8. Lyle Overbay, 1B (0-for-5, 3 K’s off Scherzer)
  9. Jayson Nix, SS (0-for-9, 7 K’s off Scherzer)

P: Phil Hughes

That all adds up to 33 for 101. Maybe they’ve got a lineup now that can beat Hughes.

Maybe JP will get going given the success he has had against him.
I see JL is playing the percentages with giving Ramon a start here!!!@??

Thank you, Richard, for the update on Cale Iorg. Wow! Wasn’t he a top prospect at one time? Is he the player who took 2 years off to be a missionary somewhere? Excuse my 70-year-old memory. LOL.

Yes, in Portugal. Third best prospect in the organization for Baseball America
“In a very bizarre turn of events the tigers have informed me I was traded to Baltimore and today told me that wasn’t happening,” Iorg tweeted
He threw a bottle to the crowd after the Canada – Mexico brawl during the WBC

You mean he threw it AT the crowd.

Sorry, at the crowd

Iorg is an example of why it is said that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing in sports. He did leave college for a mission trip and was considered a top prospect due to his defense. The bat just never developed.

Santiago is playing today and again tomorrow at short. If Worth is called up within 20 days, they don’t burn an option for him. Just saying.

Yes, read that. Recommended for sure.

Avila is on ready standby for that baby today.

I’ll bet Leyland has advised their OB to wait till tomorrow!

Jim would say the chances of delivery today are not too high and not too low.

Yes, Iorg did throw a bottle into the crowd but keep in mind that his coach (Larry Walker) had just been hit in the face by the water bottle thrown at him.
Heat of the moment.

Looks like 20 mph wind gusts blowing in from dead center today.
Wind won’t be a factor tonight at 8:49 when Michigan tips off against Syracuse.
Nats winning in Cinci.
Big sports day.

Remember that bottom line reads Scherzer P. That trumps Santiago, Kelly or whatever combo hits the top section.

Well, no one can say BB is not getting a shot with the Yankees. A surprise given the Wells acquisition /salary and the presence of Ichiro. Not to mention BB’s poor ST audition. Hope it comes together for him.

Right now the New York Yankees have four players trying to impress their boss so they may be the chosen one who stays after May 1st.

Everybody enjoying the pregame championship ring ceremony that we can’t see because of Fox?

I have Giants -Saint Louis. Not even the Yankees… they must show the west coast team

I’m in KY and have the same game El Tigre.

They once showed a Giants- Dodgers game with both teams out of contention. Every week but for Yankees Boston , it is the same here : West coast teams. last year they showed Tigers -Boston but this year not event the Yankees can change the pattern. We receive the signal for Mexico
And local TV is with Mariners- CWS

Just ended. CWS won

Now will Scherzer be able to pitch the fifth inning??

Joe changed his line up. Not as vulnerable today.

Hughes was not ready to pitch this game

Coming from injury skipped rehab game

Early, Hughes has the ability to make our guys look bad.
Andy is not only not hitting but he is looking awful.

Wells playing like the Wells that convinced the Jays to give him 126 MM

Wells must have made an adjustment from his 0-5 against Scherzer. Big fly.

Sorry Torri you shoulda caught that!

What a beautiful throw….a gold glove arm.

I have the Angels feed, but have it muted so I can get Jim and Dan on Gameday. The Angels are banging the ball today even though Hamilton continues to struggle. Sounds like BB smacked one pretty good and then got cut down at the plate on a sweet throw by Hunter.

Isn’t baseball great!!! Brennan gets a triple and I’m sure he was glad to do it against Torii. So what happens?? Torii guns him down at home plate!!!

Shoulda been an error….I think. Yes it was hit hard but he hadit in his glove. They are really hitting the ball hard against Max.

Here we go with too many pitches.

Forgot (almost) how much I dislike the fox announcers. That was a very tough play for Torii. The Prince was gone on a normal weather day. Ok, no more comments until the game is over.

Can’t see game here either. Local Fox station has Cardinals-Giants. MLB.TV blacked out. Dirks has a spot sewed up. Boesch is fighting for his baseball life. Who was the injury delay for? Every Tiger starter has had a 20-pitch first inning so far? You think that might be a strategy to get into the Tiger bullpen-by-committee?

And beside been inefficient the defense fails them

just got back from hash bash (ann arbor thing). My wife found me a Jim Price rookie card. Max on pace to regain that strikeout title, again.

Diminished velocity for Max makes life a little more difficult. He’s throwing well but he needs a couple more MPH to be able to get everything working.
Time for us to show some heart and do some damage against this guy Hughes.

Too bad Torii just didn’t go for it on Miggy’s double. I know he felt he had to hold up at 2nd to make sure.
This game is going to be a difficult one. You can just sense it.

Max has a chance to complete six innings?? Very good ball/strike ratio today.

7 if he avoids a meltdown in the six

Here we go from the top. Jackson with a single.

Torii!! What a beautiful piece of hitting. Nice to see Peralta finally get rewarded for hitting the ball hard!!

Are we ready to rock and roll!!

Jackson for MVP

5th inning…..that’s more like what we want to “see.”

Buck said Villarael not available (along with Smyly). Anybody know why?

I heard BV needed extra rest because he ran his pitch count up so high in his last outing.

“Drew Smyly will be unavailable until after the team’s scheduled off day Monday. He also hopes to not use Villarreal today, but said he could be used in emergency situation.” @jamesscmehl. No reason

The long inning.

Yep finally ad a pitcher who kept hs pitch count low enough to stay in the 6 th but lost it in the 6th…..sat too long figures!

Oh, this makess me mad.

It will be a miracle if we get out of it!

Tigers caught a huge break on BB’s ball.

Light a candle.

All these walks these pitchers are issuing this young season are enough to drive ya freaking crazy! This has got to change.

Great AA……… Geez

My God, why is Al still out there?

Downs is in the pen and will probably be brought in if the on-deck LHB gets up.

3 of the next 4 hitters are LHBs.

They are two relievers short

Well still ahead, but I got to say I’m not feeling great about this pen situation. It’s ridiculous…..and did I say the walks. Unfortunately guys we need more runs because these pitchers stink!

AJax again

He avoided him with two on. Time for Fielder to make him pay

Now, Downs another inning ? or go with Dotel, Benoit Coke depleting the bullpen ?

So how about Benoit as closer?

Pretty good game. Lots of offense for the fans. Downs was good, and I think he could have replaced Alburquerque during that inning for Overbay. Good aggressive baserunning, although I questioned starting the runners with Peralta up there late. I like the idea of selecting a closer for the day and not mixing and matching the 9th unless that day’s closer runs into trouble.
The line of the day comes from (who else) Tim McCarver who said “sports builds characters.”

Evan, they still hold the Hash Bash? That used to be on April 1st back when it lived up to it’s name.

1st saturday of every april

If you have a chance ESPN did the unthinkable and actually wrote a very nice ( tear jerker) article about Max, his family and his brothers death. I suggest you all read it.

Rich, I thought the line of the day was when McCarver talked about Glenn Wilson’s mechanics (from the gas stations he bought in Texas after he retired. Great game. These Tigers will frustrate but not disappoint. Stay positive GK. Go Tigers!

The greatest thing Tim McCarver ever did—————-make the last out of the ’68 World Series!!

Well good evening all. Another Tiger win today against those feared Yankees. Some how it just doesn’t work this year. It makes you almost feel sorry for them.
Surprisingly in the first five games, the defense has been more than adequate, absent the Boesch misplay. Seventeen hits today, and three good innings of relief make for usual success. Let’s recap three things I really like about today’s game:
1. Add on runs. Yes, we kept going after the Yanks gave us a little scare. Add on runs are a great way to deliver the death star blow. Good job offense.
2. Ajax’s total command of the lead off position. He has become a true catalyst for making this team run smoothly. Number Two Hunter is no bucket of slop himself.
3. Dirks not getting down on himself after the first two K’s. He made solid contributions after those 2 AB’s and showed what a gutsy player he is.

What can you say about Miggy and Biggy. What a truly lucky group of fans we are to have two exceptional talents batting three and four. And VMart will be cashing in soon also. Downs is a hidden jewel. We’re going to have some great baseball to watch this year.. Good night all!

The last five minutes of the Michigan-Syracuse game was torturously slow. Made baseball look like a high speed extreme sport. I hope that style of play is not the future of basketball. Talk about watching paint dry……

What a great schedule. Yankees on Sunday. Verlander vs Sabathia. Day off Monday. But we have Wolverines vs Louisville in NCAA Championship that night.

I wonder if youd be wiling to tell me where you got this them from?

Im not sure why Tiger is apologizing to the world. He betrayed his beautiful wife and his loving children and he needs to answer to them. He probably cost his sponsors tens of millions of dollars but the rest of us just need to remember our own shortcommings and forget about Tiger.

yo, Im reading this post and my cousin was reading the same blog on the blackberryi guess youre popular haha
