Home opening lineups: Tigers vs. Yankees

For the Tigers, it’s Opening Day lineup, part II.

For the Yankees, it’s a lefty-heavy lineup, which could lend itself to another save opportunity for Phil Coke if the Tigers have a lead late. New York has different lefties than the lineup Coke mowed down last October, notably Travis Hafner and Boesch, but it’s still lefty-heavy, and it lends itself a little better to playing matchups in the bullpen. Jim Leyland said pregame that he’d check on Darin Downs’ availability, but everyone else in the pen aside from Brayan Villarreal is available to pitch.

By the way, did you know that Brennan Boesch was 7-for-12 for Doug Fister before the Tigers traded for Fister? He was one of the few Tigers who did hit him well during his Mariners days.

You can follow online this afternoon on Gameday (which is pretty useful even if you’re watching on TV, watch on FS Detroit or MLB.TV, and listen on 97.1 in Detroit or MLB.com Gameday Audio online.

playing spoiler to the yankees. never gets old. they must hate us.

Still PO’d that Max did not get the honour of throwing the home opener. I guess “saving” his arm for 1 day is more important.
More important than throwing him in the 1st game of 3; more important than not pitching him “next” to JV (it was once said that JL didn’t want to throw the hard tossers back to back); and more important than acknowledging the year he had and the effort he gave Tiger fans last year.
Beyond PO’d, I’m puzzled. Don’t see the logic in it at all.

If Max pitched today, he’d start next week against Toronto, rather than in Oakland. I don’t know what the matchups say.

Scherzer also gets tomorrow’s Fox game, which will be viewed by 1.3 billion people.

Referring back to the previous blog, I seem to recall that Valverde had trouble in non-save situations. That would seem to negate the closer-by-committee strategy. Did he not bring the same intensity as when it was a save situation?

absolutely not, illinoifan. And you have a good point: jVV was a 1 position only kinda guy: saving games. Closer by Committee isn’t going to work for the ole jVV.
What I am ‘hoping and dreaming’ for is a jVV that performs as well in non-save situations as save situations. And pays attention to the running game.

Few closers do. It is flaw in most of them. JL has this rule that he gets his closer up, he puts him in. Yesterday, we saw a manager not do that. Perkins was up and throwing but as soon as the Twins broke it open, Gardy went another direction. Because Perkins threw Wed by not using him yesterday, Gardy now has him for the next two days if he chooses. JL used VV in more non save situations than usual because of his stubborn rule.
Greg, glad you dodged your scare and the cancer is staying away. Hopefully, you can find 10 good things today and we get a Tiger win.
Go Tigers.

There is no advantage to Valverde joining a committee. Absolutely none. Actually hope and dream also applies to him in a save situation. Jose is a thespian. He would not survive in anything less dramatic than the ending monologue in a one-act play.
As to Max and pitching on TV and against one team and not another. It’s just not the same as the HOME OPENER
I’d rather see him against the Blue Jays anyways!
I don’t mean to be contrary I just feel that is simply an honour and the fans deserve the best on their opening day.

The demise of the Yankees is greatly exaggerated.
This is a lineup that could give Fister, or anyone, fits.

If he throws meatballs out there, ya.

The game has started, but commercials still on.

6 LHB. Most of them with proven pop. All it takes is one or mistakes. It always seems our opponents hit them while we don’t!

Looks like a big crowd.

opening day in detroit. lots of smiles out there

i think i can see a more aggressive approach to the basepaths this season so far.

torii hunter is like the new placido polanco. guy knows how to use a bat. very impressed by him.

when did brennan learn how to play defense?

He made some great catches for us here too. I wouldn’t say he is a good OF’er but the guy is fearless. I was sorry to see him go.

true – but any catches like that? that was a doozie

wow fister just saaaaaaaaaamoked that guy – right in the chest. wasn’t fisters fault i don’t think tho.

Interesting game. Boesch is showing a little defense and some plate discipline. Fister meanwhile has 2 HBP and 2 BB. Go figure.

Fister’s velocity has been a little better, but it looks like he is throwing across his body. Has he done that in past years?

Looks like Fister is finishig in a more balanced position now. I guess I fixed him.

Or not. WP and HR.

Nice too see that pine tar again on the shoulder of VMart once again. Smoked the ball pretty well

Smyly time. lets see what he can do to these LHBs

At the game…..youklis just hit a homer. Doesn’t it seem like everygame so far this early season the Tigers have a lead…..lose a few oportunities t add on more then wham the 5th or 6th inning it goes in the crapper. And it looks like we will have another game of a starter not maing it into the 6th. So depressing

Worse yet, the other teams seem to be ABLE to hit homers. I’m not getting the vibe that we can right now.
Avila is horrible right now. Brutal in fact.

Infante on—-let’s run him.

two on, with thunder coming up, lets go! sick of this losing already.

1st & 2nd. I doubt Leyland will try anything at all here. In fact, I would agree that they don’t sacrifice here.

Boy—Hunter is not hitting in the clutch. Sorry to see this. Yesterday he took the momentum away and the same today. Hindsight—guess it would have been better to bunt!

Great Torri he just walked Jackson on 5 pitches and you weakly ground out on the first pitch……..fantastic double play…..same old same old

The way Prince has been playing I don’t expect him to do anything here. The good at bats and timely hits by the big guys have been very disappointing so far.

How sweet to be dreadfully wrong!!!
That was impressive.

It was high tool. Would have been called a ball. I’m not saying Prince is another Vlad, but he hit that ball in a place not many other batters would have gone for.

lets see a good outting here, Smyly! we know last time was a fluke.

Out of all the participants on Monday in Minny, I think the cold affected Smyly the most.

maybe it doesn’t get cold in Maumelle, Arkansas very often

I’ll be darned.

avila deformed that baseball. wow – hopefully he has found himself

Jim & Dan just said attendance is 45,051.

Just leave Smyly in for the 4 inning save. Stick with the hot hand.
— Bob

That’s what I’d do.

drew lookin good!

adios and best wishes to Cale Iorg.

Lord have mercy!

This the kind of fun we’re looking for?

Yup … It’s a start.
— Bob

pitch him as long as you can. re: drew

i.e. send him out for the 9th, but have a guy warmed up in case things start getting hairy

Nice to see such a solid bounce-back day for Smyly

It’s amazing how much easier the game becomes when you dont walk people and get ahead in the count. Smyly looks awesome right now.
— Bob

drew was so nasty today! hahahahahahahah – YES! feels good!

Just the way you draw it up. Or Drew it up.

Way to go guys, way to give the huge crowd something to cheer about – nice to see power and great to see Drew bounce back.

Drew Smyly, I knew Monday was a fluke! He looked awesome, will need him big time this year. Feels so much better to see this team play the way they should! Will be at game tomorrow and Sunday. I will bring them some luck!

Free Curly Fry Time in Motown. When Michelle Obama finds out, she’ll order apple slices, so enjoy them while you can. A truly enjoyable victory for all Tiger fans. The atmosphere must have been electrifying; Mr. Fister just couldn’t quite get in the groove. But Mr. Fielder and Mr. Smyly were groovin on easy street. So for the first time this year, hear we go: Three things I liked about today’s game:
1. Getting the early lead in the game. Had Fister been pitching from a deficit, his groove missing might have been much worse.
2. Infante’s solid play from both sides. I think we’ll see a great performance from Mr. Omar for a full season.
3. Smyly, the strike thrower; we’ve spent the first three games giving up way too many walks. Drew said to JIm, “Give me the ball, and I’ll do my thing.” Keeping both Rick and Drew will end up being the best move by DD this season.

Hats off to Biggy for being a “monster” hitter. And the swing by Alex was poetry in motion. Just a well played ball game from all angles. Great momentum heading into “Sherzermania” on Saturday.

Nice to see you back Greg. All the best to you.

Absolutely!!! Three from Greg. And three cheers to him from us. Go Tigers!!

My best wishes to you too
I followed the game by the score update by ESPN during a soccer game . They were winning the first time I saw the score so I missed the roller-coaster ( Reading the comments , it was). But All’s Well That Ends Well

glad to see Greg back!

Rondon 1 SO/1 BB. Non save situation.
Amando Galarraga won for Louisville

What a great game. Lots of positives. Omar for one. Turning the DP.
Avila getting large again. Prince- well Prince had a mega game. We still have Cabby yet to come around. And Victor. Torii is a clutch player, he has not shown it yet.
Can’t say enough about Drew and Fister is still coming around. He can be slow off the mark.
AJ is steady, never thought he would be regarded as such, but he is becoming more consistent I think.

Miggy has an RBI in every game this year. On pace for 160+ this year.

NC has struck out 6 times in 2 games.
Iron Mike—pounded 2 HRs today===this time against Toledo.
I always liked the guy.

Four homers in two games for Hessman.

Miguel hits 450 vs Hughes in 20 AB. He can add avg. to his 5 RBI

Austin is no longer working on so many things and is just playing ball. Turning into a damn good ballplayer. How do the Yankees let these people get away?

GREG, the Tigers are in Washington and Baltimore this year. I’m going to the Washington series for sure. Keep in touch.

Anyone see the first Prince HR knocked over a fan(a woman?) Must be hard to get out of the way of a ball hit that hard. (S)he didn’t catch the ball, so hopefully she has an awesome bruise to remind her of it.

The final results are in for today’s games and the AL Central has a five way tie for first and last place. Everyone at 2-2. Remember our primary goal remains win the division. The last undefeated team fell rather rudely as the Nationals were blanked by the Reds, 15-0. Nats team ERA went from 0.33 to 3.86 in one night!! And that’s how the baseball gods keep all teams humble. And every team in MLB has at least one win!!!

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s game. Will the Yankee skipper adjust his line up any?
Let’s hope our skipper can use Downs first out of the pen, if Joe is unable or unwilling to change the Yankee order. They are vulnerable with four players making 82 million this year on the DL and we need to attack. ON our side, both Smyly and Downs worked on change ups this spring to improve their game. Did Coke come up with anything new in his arsenal?? Is he throwing any change ups?? Tomorrow will be my first TV game since the World Series. Evan, you better have sunny skies on the way!!!! Go Tigers!!!

A bit off topic possibly, but anyway – which template are you using? I really love the header style.

thats one way to handle your money, but that sounds a bit like a "2 wrongs make a right" plan of action. While tempting, I think I will stick to trying to control my spending and putting aside what I can for a rainy day. For me, it is often a matter of discipline. I try to wait until I have all, or most, of the money at my disposal before making a purchase. I dont like to rack up extra debt, especially for things that are "wants" and not "needs".
