Worth optioned to Toledo, Tigers roster set

The final roster move to set the Tigers roster was the move everyone was kind of expecting: Infielder Danny Worth will open the season at Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers announced the move after Thursday’s loss to the Astros at Osceola County Stadium. Worth, who finished the game at third base, headed back on the team bus and will head over to minor-league camp on Friday.

Worth shuttled five different times between Detroit and Toledo last year alone, so no one knows better than him that this isn’t a long-term banishment. Still, the fact that the move was the last of camp, and it came at almost the very end, had to have hurt.

“It was a good conversation, because he’s such a respectful kid. It wasn’t a fun conversation,” manager Jim Leyland said. “I’m not going to elaborate, but I can tell you that in reality, we had 27 guy this year that we tried to fit on a 25-man squad, and we just couldn’t do it. Because he deserves to be on the team. But at this time, that did not work out. With [Quintin Berry] and Danny Worth, we had two guys that probably deserved to be on the team.

“He played great. He’s hitting better than I’ve ever seen him. He’s playing better than I’ve seen him. He looked like a big leaguer and he is a big leaguer, but that’s not much consolation for him today.”

Though Worth was initially thought to be in competition for the final spot on the 25-man roster, he stuck around on the chance of winning the utility infield spot held by Ramon Santiago for the past several years. Santiago signed a two-year contract before last season to fill it, but the Tigers were by all indications checking the market to see if there was trade interest. Santiago will make $2.1 million guaranteed this season, so the Tigers would’ve had to eat a bulk of that salary to facilitate a deal.

Much like last year’s Winter Meetings, when Santiago’s name first popped up in trade rumors, any interest was limited by the contract. Thus, Worth is a Mud Hen again.

Poor Danny!

This is for the best, not just for the team but for Danny. It is very possible next year Danny is fighting for the starting SS position. Danny can season in AAA but he can’t season backing up Jhonny and Omar (who don’t come out of the lineup very often if they are hitting well). Hey, it is also possible Jhonny or Omar has to spend time on the DL – that’s another reason we want Danny staying nice and hot in AAA.
I am confident Santiago is going to have a good season with the Tigers. He can bunt well, has sneaky power, kinda quick, hits from both sides of the plate, plays average defense and i hear he can catch in a pinch. But if Santiago doesn’t work out – I know just the guy who will fly up ole 75 in a jiffy.

That is why you give these type of players a 1 year contract. I like Ramon but he needs to produce. If he does, he deserves to be on the team. Danny will be ready to fill that role. How much money does he make? So much speculation going on right now. Let the real games begin! Go Tigers!

Kudos to DD for being able to sit on his hands this winter with now plenty of good options waiting for their chance at Toledo.
Assuming other parts of the team play to their capabilities, can’t see the closer issue burning us that much other than keeping Central interesting.
A low cost, half season rental might be the best outcome short and long term for the Tigs.

This is about Dombrowski saying they tried to acquire Tuiasasopo last year before the Jeff Baker trade. But then, there was that story about Matt sending the e-mail to Dave over the winter, asking for an invite. I guess there’s more to it, but it doesn’t add up. ??

Interesting, Rich.

The high temp in Minneapolis on Monday …..a whopping 33 degrees! That is why there shouldn’t be out or baseball there. They are a team that should have a retractable roof. Insane. The guys are not going to be happy and not going to be hitting.

how would you like to be playing in 33 degrees against justin? hows a jam job going to feel?

I hope twins won’t be hitting…..I’m worried about the guys with the D on their jerseys.
