Friday: Tigers at Nationals

Nearly all the Tigers regulars are going on the Sunday-Monday overnight trip to Port St. Lucie and Jupiter, so Victor Martinez and Prince Fielder are the only regulars today. However, the starting outfield has three candidates to make the roster — Tuiasosopo in left, Berry in center, Kelly in right. They’ll all get to face Stephen Strasburg at Space Ghost, er, Coast Stadium.

TIGERS

  1. Quintin Berry, CF
  2. Don Kelly, RF
  3. Victor Martinez, DH
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B
  5. Brayan Pena, C
  6. Matt Tuiasosopo, LF
  7. Ramon Santiago, 2B
  8. Danny Worth, SS
  9. Kevin Russo, 3B

P: Drew Smyly, Brayan Villarreal, Jose Alvarez, Phil Coke

NATIONALS

  1. Denard Span, CF
  2. Jayson Werth, RF
  3. Bryce Harper, LF
  4. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
  5. Adam LaRoche, 1B
  6. Ian Desmond, SS
  7. Danny Espinosa, 2B
  8. Kurt Suzuki, C
  9. Stephen Strasburg, P

Villarreal has quietly been having a very good spring, which could be a saving grace for Leyland after he was clearly frustrated about Al Alburquerque’s outing last night. Coke, meanwhile, has alternated good outings with four-hit innings over his last four appearances, though the second of them featured a couple hits that could have been handled better.

so pumped, this game has lots of good things to watch. 2E in lf, worth at ss, russo is in there, don kelly and quintin berry both fighting for a spot to. oh and smyly, villarreal and alvarez all fighting for something. great lineup skip!

need to get that boy some work against MLB caliber guys. hopefully ole davey leaves them starters in there all game again!

I am guessing that Alvarez being considered for a spot with only AA Starting experience means that Lobstein will soon be gone.

Yeah, this lineup is comprised of a lot of guys fighting for roster spots. I doubt we will see “bored” play today.

1 walk compared to 7. albq doesn’t have his command this spring, yet.

Jim Leyland: “Some guys need to step it up. We’ll find out. Performances are starting to get evaluated. It’s getting late.”

There is no audio for this game. I’m disgusted.

boesch scratched with rib cage issues

2E smashed one!

2E vs lefties: .231/.333/.615/.949
2E vs righties: .357/.419/.786/1.205

Matt T. / 2E just homered.

and don kelly just GIDP.

drew smyly just moving them down out there…maybe he saw jason’s prediction that he’d be a long man instead of a starter

moving => mowing

Too much quality starting pitching is a wonderful problem to have

worth, kelly, martinez and prince put together a lil something something and we got the lead!

enter jordan lennerton lol

c’mon santiago get outta the way of the slide!

Did he have time?……looked pretty bang bang to me? I don’t know?

lets just say it was close. IMO Santiago’s defense has declined a bit in past year or so; about 2 years ago Santiago makes that play.

I was at the game and he hung in there to turn the double play. Never would have turned it if he bailed.

wow looking good today coke :0

Coke bewilders me. He has good stuff, but it’s always a question whether Postseason Phil or that imposter will show up.

QB or not QB, that is the question for the Tigers’ 25 man roster

qb and his sub 200 batting avg

to be fair his OBP isn’t bad…and at least he has 1 stolen base.
.
did the tigers bring the baserunning coach to ST?

let me pose another question to the board. in your opinion, how much bearing do spring training statistics have on how a player is likely to perform during the regular season?

Depends on the player, but in general, none.

if spring statistics have little bearing on what develops during the season, then what of significance for the regular season can be concluded from the spring games?

Are you talking about guys trying to make the club? Because I think ST is mostly about players preparing for the season.

I do not think Kobernus will make the team as his bat does not seem ready. I would not be surprised if a trade happens by the weekend. I would think it would be someone from one of the last two drafts as the Nats have 40 man issues. 2E has hit himself into the mix. Santiago has a spot. The final spot will go to Kelly. Marte may well beat out Al Al.

AA better start getting it together. I have a feeling JL is not one of his biggest fans anyway and with the way he has been pitching he may not cut the mustard.

For me, guys going north are the ones with talent and/or track records. And someone needs to have pop off the bench, just like Ibanez in the postseason last year against us.

The bench pop issue/LF complement is to me the most glaring issue on the Tigers roster. Commenters seem not to feel similarly. I only hope the Tigers brass does. Maybe 2E is the answer, but I am not sure about him.

It more about occasionally resting guys. Not a lot of pinch hitting is going to happen with their lineup.

So, FOR ME, and I am probably not in sync with the the powers that be, Kobernus and Kelly are out. ALAL, BV, Rondon and Smyly are in to complement the givens. That obviously makes Porcello the fifth starter.

Pena and Santiago are locks. 2E/QB/et al, plus the guy with pop to complement LF and come off the bench, round out the roster.

Delmon Young, with his salary, track record and potential would be a perfect fit. Plus, he did ok in the postseason.

JL dislike Al2 since The Kiss.

Smyly’s body language shows he has gained confidence. I think he also has a good “head” for pitching. Encouraging that he appreciates the way Cliff Lee pitches.

Smyly looked extremely good today. I suspect there could be injury issues with Fister and/or Scherzer, so it’s good to have Drew. We don’t have much of a 7th starter in the organization right now.

I meant possible injury issues at some point, to be clear.
