Saturday: Tigers at Blue Jays

Left-field platoon candidate Jeff Kobernus is actually getting a start in left field today. Brennan Boesch moves to right, with Torii Hunter at DH.

Matt Tuiasosospo is the third baseman of the day, and backup catcher Brayan Pena gets the start at first base. Tuiasosopo has a very strong arm, so we might find out how much of a vertical leap Pena has today if he unleashes one.

As mentioned previously, no Victor Martinez today with lefty Ricky Romero on the mound for the Jays. Also on Toronto’s pitching list is the ageless Darren Oliver, a day after the Tigers saw the ageless LaTroy Hawkins.

No TV for today’s game. You can listen on AM 1270 back in Detroit, SportsNet 590 in Toronto, or MLB.com Gameday Audio online.

BTW: Kobernus has the most abs (12) against lefties ON THE TEAM, and is hitting them with 4Hits (1 triple), 1RBI, 1BB, 3SOs
.
and compare that to some other people fighting for the LF RHB platoon

i think it’ll come down to Kobernus or Berry (if healthy by opening day). it might come down to whether Kobernus can do the little stuff right: make the routine defensive plays, good baserunning decisions, lay down bunt effectively. has speed but will that translate to MLB stolen base success? that’s not a question with Berry.

atta boy ANDY DIRKS!

Some of those numbers are compiled against minor leaguers. Can’t go by that. You have to see them, like Jim does everyday sitting in that folding chair a few feet from homeplate.
Kobernus is being given every opportunity to make this club. I hope he can do it. We need that RH hitter.
I’m home now, having never gotten near a beach in all that cold weather. Somebody call me a waah-bulance.

There you are. Glad the trip home was OK. Gosh, it was like one of those first beautiful spring days in MI yesterday. Sun was out, no wind, people driving with windows down. I opened the windows and shut the furnace off for a few hours.
.
What’s up with Mr. Fister? I’m sure he’ll get it together hopefully, by his next outing.

Fister has been less than impressive this spring! Boy I hope people don’t start ripping on Brookens he’s had two people thrown out at home already this spring!

he has not been impressive

Tommy Brookens has now gotten 3 runners thrown out at home in the last 6 innings.

Checked out the box score of the Pirates-Twins game (I am also a Pirates fan) and the 9th inning was chalk full of ex Tiger prospects – Clete Thomas, Wilkin Ramerez for Minnesota and Andy Oliver pitching for the Bucs (game up 2 ER in 1 IP with 2 wild pitches).

I hear inge might be making the starting 25 man roster….as a bench player but whatev

Theyv’e got a good closer!

Runner on second. No out
Miguel Cabrera just made out the runner in second going to third .He is splaying 1b

Saw that. Miggy ran that play to perfection. Smart ballplayer.

Infante double and run scored when Molina lost the throw from the OF. It was a bad call by the 3b coach

2-2 Now.
Request to use Sanchez tomorrow denied

Another great play at 1B

It is over for Venezuela

I guess the player will be with the team by Monday

First time PR defeats Venezuela in the WBC

I feel your pain Tigre! Canada did come back and beat Mexico (figuratively not literally!) but I went through that thing with Italy beating us and know how it feels.
I must say I am one of the proponents of international ball at this level. It would bother me to see a Tiger get injured but it is cool to see these guys play for something other than money. It is an essence of baseball (and other sports) that is oddly, patriotic, yet friendly, competition.
I was very upset with the Mexico/Canada brawl. This is not indicative of nature of the relationship of the two countries nor the idea of fellowship that “normal” baseball imparts. The int’l rules change the way the game is supposed to be played in this tournament.

Go get ‘em Tommy!

David Wright. We don’t get to see him much, but he’s a pretty special player.

Strangely enough, I called that slam two hitters before Wright came up. I’ve never come close to doing that, and never will again.

I realize Tiger brass will decide to employ Castellanos and Garcia in Toledo. If that is the case I would have Pena, Worth, Boesch and Kobernus on my bench. Fully realizing that might mean a defensive deficiency in the outfield. Boesch provides power, Kobernus speed and Worth provides defense all over the diamond.
