Sunday’s lineups: Tigers vs. White Sox

Similar lineup as Saturday, including Garcia in right field, Delmon in left and Boesch at DH. Boesch moves down to the eight spot, while Infante moves up.

No Adam Dunn again on the Chicago side. A.J. Pierzynski gets a game at DH, with Tyler Flowers catching.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (1-for-9, 5 K’s off Sale)
  2. Omar Infante, 2B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (1-for-10, 3 K’s off Sale)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B
  5. Delmon Young, LF
  6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  7. Avisail Garcia, RF
  8. Brennan Boesch, DH (1-for-5, HR, 3 K’s off Sale)
  9. Gerald Laird, C (3-for-4, HR off Sale)

P: Justin Verlander

  1. Alejandro De Aza, CF
  2. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
  3. Dewayne Wise, LF
  4. Paul Konerko, 1B (8-for-52, 2 HRs, 15 K’s off Verlander)
  5. Alex Rios, RF
  6. A.J. Pierzynski, DH (19-for-71, 3 HRs, 12 RBIs off Verlander)
  7. Alexei Ramirez, SS
  8. Tyler Flowers, C
  9. Orlando Hudson, 2B

P: Chris Sale

What I’d like to see.
-AJ dropping one down and beatin’ it out. (Otherwise he’s just gonna K)
-Verlander knock their AJ on his arse.
A little small ball. Chisox are reeling a bit and it’s time to make them beat themselves and throw the ball around the yard.
-No hittable 0-2 pitches from JV

It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any difference in Laird catching Verlander compared with Avila. There’s definitely a comfort level between Verlander and Avila, so Laird might be a change of pace.

Beware Tyler Flowers. Four homers in last seven games played. Tiger homer update. After playing 132 games, the homer battle is all tied Tigers 131 and Opponents 131. Let’s hope in our last 30 games we can get an advantage of +5!!! Everyone agree it was a good idea to keep Delmon Young. Oh, if we can just get to those playoffs.

Well if JV needs to be “told” anything, at least we know GMoney will do it.

quotables from Leyland on the radio pregame: says Garcia has “a good face,” didn’t like the route Garcia took on the double by Konerko, Scherzer has found his arm slot and release point on the slider, although rosters can expand to 40 he believes teams should only dress 30 per game.

Good Justin is picking up right were he left off in KC! Ace???

Aug 6th , last W : 132 pitches.

Far more concerning for me is the way this team is being managed.
Leadoff walk. Meat of the order coming up. Why do you keep the offense in DP mode? Yo know Cabby hits the ball on the ground a lot and hard. Would it not be better for AJ to be on 2nd where he can score on a hit, go to 3rd on a grounder or simply stay out of the DP?
Predictable lack of small ball and managerial strategy. Infante can bunt, he is fast and can put pressure on the defense. He has been hitting a tonne of lazy fly balls recently.
It all adds up to sacrifice bunt.
Not for Leyland. For a man who has been around the game as long as he has been it is downright stupid for him to refuse to play the game the way it demands to be played.

As long as I know, he has now, 62 SO with breaking balls

There is nothing that I can see as a downside to bunting with Infante in that situation. Nothing. Every single run counts.

Ya Justin has the strike outs tonight…..but I am still not convinced how sharp he is tonight…..
Shocker they don’t turn a double play.

And somebody!

That’s now he hit Youklis! He better be stingier because runs could be hard to come by against Sale.

These guys can get to Sale. They need to maximize every opportunity though. No waiting around for heroic and epic home runs. Get a run, anyway you can. Then another.
I’d like to see JV make you happy tonight GK. He’s already given up more runs than I know you can stand, so let’s hope he keeps it that way.
I doubt it though, this one is probably gonna be 5-3 or 4-2 type of game.
No idea why Leyland would play Boesch. Hope it works out though.

Thank you, Terry Francona. Telling it like it is.

Well the reason why 1 might be to much is for the exact reason we just saw for the 2nd time grounded into another double play.

Then bunt!
Balester had another good outing tonight. He seems to have fixed a few things this year. Maybe next year we’ll see him again.
What a day that Profar kid (from Curacao) had yesterday. Homered in his 1st at bat. Doubled in another. He’s a shortstop. Wouldn’t it be nice to see Elvis in OUR building?
Good teams take advantage of gifts (walks). Three of them so far. Need to do something.

Let Sale off the hook……too bad

Boy did JV get squeezed in that AB to Flowers.

Well that was brutal.
Young has been so hot but unfortunately that has also made him over aggressive at the dish. Can’t keep helping out pitchers with RISP. Yesterday Avila swing at 3 balls (actually 4) and today Delmon swings at 3 breaking balls out of the strike zone..
Two “gifts” left stranding.
C’mon guys, 2 out of 3 isn’t enough. Play for the day. Win this game. Forget about those other two–they’ll just make you too comfortable.
Thought for the day–how would Porcello’s record look if he pitched for the ChiSox? Or the Mariners!

Bad call by the rookie manager

Got a break. Should be a momentum shifter. Great play by Peralta. The next K gives emphasis. The offense needs to respond now. Change the game.

The ump is helping JV , a lot

He was right.. 420 Ft

I`d agree with you on that Tigre with nobody out and Flowers running.
At least Ventura is willing to try something.
Brennan–whoa. Who would have thought

Well so far so goo. No it`s JV`s turn to keep some momentum with a shutdown inning. The 6th has been a challenging one.

Bruce Rondon will play winter baseball here in Venezuela with Guillen´s former team

Surprised with them giving Konerko an error on that. I mean I was surprised he played it that way, waiting for it to go foul–seemed dumb, but it hit the bag and not his glove.

Oh my. That is what we’ve been waiting for all year. Timely, important, clutch, productive and perhaps even a bit unexpected.

PoG , again, DY

Ventura used all the bullpen yesterday. Today, he left there Sale too long

Delmon is sure not your typical RHB. You don’t see many guys who can hit them that far off their shoetops. Wow.

And was a great pitch

Decision coming for JL. JV will want to go 9. I have no problem with that, physically speaking. Where I think the decision is that it might be a good idea to get him out of there with a dominant performance and avoid this one leaking away into a so-so, or worse.
The problem lies with entrusting a 3 run lead to Valverde. I’ve been lobbying for Benoit. I KNOW he can close.

Time to call Benoit.

Might have taken Young out to quickly. I see the logic but he is also going to get up once more.

Someone is back.

Well GK, did the Ace make you smile tonight?
Boy would I like to see Benoit come in.
What a game by JV. This should be a victory and won with an exclamation mark.

21 QS. Whip: 1:04

He was great! My fear wasn’t really that he would do what he did the other night I wasn’t sure we would get 2 runs….KC still fresh in my mind. Heck I gotta tell ya that homer that DY got, even during that at bat he was flailing at pitches did anyone really think he was going to do anything in that AB?

JV did not get fastball happy. Gerald Laird played a good game, blocked some tough curves in the dirt, hustled, threw a runner out, and darn near yarded one after Delmon.
I KNOW JL will bring in VV. I’m not ecstatic about that and the ridiculous thing about it is even his manager will be worried about that move before he throws his 1st pitch.

How much longer does JL need to figure this nonsense out?

Potatoe are you kidding me! Honest to god. Although I gotta say with him pitching several days in a row I was hoping he wouldn’t go in.

Jackson saved Valverde

Well, that was thrilling. I appreciate Papa Grande’s work, but at some point, they have got to consider letting someone else save in some situations. He is scary!

Boy I didnt think AJ was going to catch that! Geez…freaking heart attack!

Austin took one false step on that last one but recovered. I’m glad I didn’t see that false step in real time.
Things are suddenly working out. No real reason for it, they just are. Baseball is just weird. Now we’re in a 29 game sprint to the finish line, a finish line that is in KC of all places. Runners take your mark.
Now they have to avoid the letdown that happened after the previous Chicago sweep. Need to do some damage to Cleveland before going on that final long and very tough 3-city road trip.

The last 3 days have been fantastic.
Some things are getting better that needed too.
We need Avila and Infante to come around more. Get Infante to lay a few down.
Garcia being called up, for me, was one of thos obvious things to do that I thought the club wouldn’t recognize. Vry pleased they did that and before September—that was the key for me.
VV, you can’t trust him.
3 hits today and again there were 2 very loud outs. Garcia made a line shot to right look routine, it wasn’t.
The opposition has no trouble with Jose Valverde.
This is problematic and can’t be swept under the rug.

Jason tweeted that he wouldn’t have been surprised if JL had used Benoit in the 9th. I was thinking the same. Benoit is our best reliever, but we’re stuck with Valverde for this year. JL wouldn’t change that now. I don’t think.
I’m with everyone else; I can’t stand being nervous about the closer coming in. It should be just the opposite.

Best line of the night: after Leyland slapped Verlander on the back at the end of the 8th, one of the announcers said “that’s the hardest he’s been hit all night.” Unlike Fox, ESPN usually does a good job.
The two best ball/strike umpires I’ve seen this season are tonight’s Adrian Johnson, and Alan Porter.
Verlander says something to AJ after fanning him, AJ responds with “WHAT?” and then HE gets booed his next time up. No justice there. He did pay back Valverde for his premature celebration from last night. I’m in the minority of people that don’t dislike AJ.

IMinority Report: me too!
The guy plays hard and plays heart.

Wow! what a marvelous three days for the Comerica faithful, and all of us loyal Tiger fans in the heartland. Tied for first place, and hoping now we don’t give it up. WE have a solid 1-2 pitching duo, and a solid 1-2 hitting duo. If everyone else would do their part, we might be able to see the post season. I would have loved to hear Hawk whine after Delmon golfed his HR into the left field stands. Hey I’ve been a Delmon critic all year long, but you have to give him his due the last 10 games; he’s earned his money. JV returns to his expected efficiency, and Valverde continues to blunder through his save opportunities. When his outings are over, he needs to quietly walk off the field; he has nothing to boast about, giving up runs on consecutive nights in critical games.

Let’s look at three things to like about tonight’s game:
1. Garcia’s presence in the lineup. Two games in, and you have the feeling that it’s not going to be an instant out.
2. Young’s third at bat. If you’re honest with yourself, you and I had him rung up for his third SO. The pitch by Sale was good; Delmon simply executed the end of a great AB, and it paid off big time.
3. Laird’s ground out to second in the seventh illustrates why he is an integral part of our team. There is no substitute for hustle and leadership. Thanks, Gerald.

The sky is the limit for JV. If he wants it, he will continue to fine tune his game to levels we haven’t seen before. It’s all up to him. Thrilled for Boesch, but Dirks needs to be in the lineup daily. Tomorrow, we need to jump the Tribe early, and never look back. Good night all!

The play of the game, IMO, was Jhonny Peralta’s scoop of Laird’s throw to 2nd with Flowers running.
That ended up being a DP and for one of the few times this year, the momentum shift was taken advantage of. That took a lot of concentration on Peralta’s part to A) make the scoop and B) keep the glove on the runner.

How about DH-ing Miggy tomorrow? Let Kelly, or Ramon, play 3rd.
I know it means DY in left but they really need to be cautious with Miggy.
Maybe even a day off? (sacrilege)

Sprint to the finish??????? Baseball is only a sprint after you are eliminated and can’t wait for it to be over. We want no part of that. We still have nine tough series to play. We begin today with one at home against the Cleveland Indians. What’s our record this year against these Indians anyway?? Then we have a ten game road trip. We recently beat the Angels in two series at Comerica. Do you think they will be looking for some revenge?? Will they bring out their rally monkeys?? How about those White Sox who we will play next?? That will be a war. Let’s play this out one game at a time. We have Anibal on the bump in about three hours. Go Anibal!!!!!!!!Go Tigers!!!!!!!

Likening the baseball season to a long distance race, this is the stage in the race where you sprint to the finish line. I thought it was a good analogy? Imagine each of the things you mentioned as one step in the sprint.
