Saturday: Tigers vs. Royals

Just arrived in Kansas City for All-Star festivities (the Futures Game, for one, is Sunday night), but here’s the lineup for today’s game against the Royals. Berry is back in the lineup against another lefty, though Bruce Chen is a far different style pitcher than Jonathan Sanchez. Brennan Boesch sits for a second straight game.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Quintin Berry, LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B
  5. Delmon Young, DH
  6. Ryan Raburn, RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  8. Ramon Santiago, 2B
  9. Gerald Laird, C

P: Doug Fister

Good news on the Tigers vs, lefthanded starters front. This is the third time this year when we have faced lefthanded starters three or more days in a row. We have done well each time. April 4-0 June 2-1 Now in July 3-0 (so far) Two more games to go for a total of five. We have seen B. Chen more than a few times and he gives us trouble. So our guys just have to battle. As a team, we have to get better against lefties. Facing lefties five days in a row, may benefit us greatly in the long run. Rich, it’s when we have a normal pattern of catching a lefty here and there that we have trouble with them. Let’s win two more and take a break!!!!!! Go Tigers!!!!!!!

these Fister starts bear close watching. if he can’t put together some quality starts in the next month, they certainly will have to make a deal for a veteran starter. a guy who could slot as a #3 in a playoff rotation, and then walk away as a free agent. ideally, they’ll want to limit Smyly’s IP down the stretch too. unfortunate that rumored efforts to acquire Gio Gonzalez in the offseason didn’t succeed.

If Fister is not still feeling the effects of his injury, I think he improves. I don’t expect him to be the 2nd half guy from last year but he was a pretty good pitcher with Seattle. Gio has become part of a very effective rotation in Washington.
Unless the pot was considerably sweetened, I’d be more interested in Greinke than Garza, who I think would only be of marginal help. I don’t much get into trade rumors though. Or any rumors, actually.
