Tigers designate Matt Young for assignment
The Tigers had one more move Tuesday afternoon to complete their roster shuffle in the wake of Max Scherzer’s scratch from Tuesday night’s start. Detroit designated for assignment the contract of outfielder/second baseman Matt Young, who spent a stretch with the big club last month before being sent back to Triple-A Toledo.
The move creates a spot on the 40-man roster for left-hander Darin Downs, whose contract was purchased from the Mud Hens as an extra reliever tonight.
If Young clears waivers in the coming days, the Tigers can outright his contract to Toledo. He’s batting .251 (50-for-199) with 11 extra-base hits, 20 RBIs and 13 steals with the Mud Hens this year, though 53 walks bump his on-base percentage to .410.
