Saturday: Tigers at Athletics

Austin Jackson, Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Raburn both get days off in the middle of a long stretch of games. For Peralta, though, it’s the second day off in three games. It’s not believed to be a health concern, more of a matchup concern, with Peralta 1-for-21 off Brandon McCarthy. Raburn, however, supposedly had his back lock up on him last night, the byproduct of a dive he made Thursday. He’s taking batting practice today, but you can see him stretching his back.

The A’s had to make some adjustments to their lineup after both Yoenis Cespedes and Kila Ka’aihue were scratched.

Don’t be surprised if this ends up being a pitchers duel, not just because of the pitchers but also the field. The odd start time, 5:05 out here, is similar to the start times the Tigers had for the ALCS games here back in 2006, and shadows were a problem. Also, the way the field is lined up, the sun could be a factor for outfielders.

Great comments, Jason, and very insightful. Fister has done a tremendous job of damage control. I can’t see the game and I’m curious if Luke has been up in the bullpen at any point so far??

danny kelly is not AJ with the bat….but he’s playing good CF and isn’t making JL look foolish yet.

that don, not danny. my b.

ugh don don don big strikeout in the 5th…

hats off to doug – he battled and now looks like his stuff is going strong

brennan lookin good thank god

I see Lloyd Christmas is in the box seats behind home plate.

it’s true what they say, senior citizens – while dangerous behind the while – can serve a purpose

*behind the wheel

o my gosh he tried to let it bounce and get two! hahahahhaaha he GETS NONE!!!

can danny not lay down a bunt? oh man he’s gotta be able to – geesh

Brennan Boesch has two hits and a stolen base. His best game since NY. It looks like the manager giving him one day on the bench worked. Good managing.

Any chance of a squeeze play??

not after DK struckout…..rather have him swing the bat

Last inning for Fister and again no run support

MAN fister is the real deal!

Cleveland lost. So even under 500 and 2 games out of first place. The division is looking worse than advertised

lets get mister fister the win tonight boys!!

Nightmare on elm street.

This team is a freaking joke! One of the worst hitting teams in baseball isn’t having that hard of a time! I just don’t get this team! Can’t keep saying its early and they’ll snap out of it forever! 2008!

I would like to see tomorrow Laird catching and Fileder benched for a day.
Jackson and Peralta back.

Yes, this is miserable. Disgusting. Sickening. Several A’s players with below .200 BA can hit but virtually no Tigers can. Even though Fister had some trouble, he held them to one run. What is it going to take to shake these Tigers out of their funk….stupor….sleepwalking….whatever it is?

Ya know the old adage that good pitching beats good hitting? Well we’ve have good to excellent pitching for the most art, but guess what YA STILL GOTTA HIT some! This team is a pathetic embarressing joke of a team. Not worth the time or money these days!

Discombobulated is what it is.

Prince needs a day off. He’s used up. Not hitting or fielding.

somehow, I don’t think he’d approve. I may be wrong.

I don’t care if he approves or not. He’s used up. He can come back in Chicago on Monday.

We all saw this mess in ’08. I’m giving them another month.

Yes. Sit him. Not impressed with his play at first either. Very disappointing effort tonight. Dirks is the one bright spot both ways.

Although we lost the game we can take a few positives to the next battle. Brennan Boesch had his first two hit game this month and the only stolen base of the game!!!!.. DY, our DH, has quietly hit in five straight games (.300) and chipped in 4 rbis. Doug Fister was almost lights out but unfortunately that’s what it took to win today. O. Dotel has bounced back nicely from two rough outings in the past week. AD kept his torrid pace up for another day. For all the guys who had a rough day turn the page and move on.

Well, Leyland had it right in saying that McCarthy pitched well but we need to hit big league pitchers. They pitch good, we’re supposed to hit good. There are no excuses, not the opposing pitchers or the start time or anything. This team is in a very deep funk, not just a blip on the radar of a season. As I said earlier, someone needs to provide some tough leadership, be it the manager, coaches, players, GM, even the owner. These guys are wandering in a haze right now. They look tired and confused.
I said on Wednesday night that I hoped we could split in Oakland. I don’t know what the FSD boys are talking about with an “offensively challenged” Oakland team. I was hoping for a split. That’s the reality of it at this time. This is not a good club at this time. We have pretty good starting pitching and that….is…..all.

Detroit fans deserve better.
Can’t even gripe about Raburn in this fiasco.
Seems like the team is ripe for turning on itself. How can you be a starting pitcher on this team and go out on the hill with any confidence that you will be rewarded, even if you throw shutout ball?

Missed the game (partly because of lack of interest). See we lost agains with no offense.
Surprised? No, our 3-4-5 hitters struck out 7 times. Duh.

Fielder needs a break of at least a day. question is who do you start in his abscense kelly or risk upsetting cabbys flow at 3rd by spot starting at 1st. Im leaning toward kelly.

Hey statman Dave, how many different line ups has Leyland put together this year? Thanks everyone for the comments as I do not get to watch all the games. It is May 13 and a happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. C’mon Tigers, let’s see some excitement! –Dave

JL has used 25 different batting orders so far, with 6 identicals so far. By way of a random comparison, Texas has used 19 and 8, NY 19 and 5.
2011 numbers for Detroit are 127 and 7, Texas 106 and 8, NY 94 and 11.
You asked.

Tweeted by Beck:
Jackson 8, Dirks 7, Cabrera 5, Fielder 3, Young dh, Avila 2, Boesch 9, Peralta 6, Raburn 4. Verlander is starting
