Thursday: Tigers vs. Mariners

The Tigers are giving Austin Jackson the day off he was expected to get Wednesday by essentially replacing him with two players. Andy Dirks returns to the lineup as the designated hitter, making his first start in over a week since straining his left hamstring in Kansas City. He’ll bat leadoff, while Don Kelly starts in center and bats sixth.

Gerald Laird starts behind the plate against Mariners right-hander Hector Noesi.

Can these guys at least knock them off the plate a little, make them move their feet? Come on pitchers, toughen up!

we need to smash this hector guy – he’s been pitching poorly this year.

Here we go again. Down 3-0 after one inning. Cy Noesi is sharp and the Mariner hitters look like Texas Rangers. What is it going to take to get these Tigers out of this funk?

We are down 3-0 again and we need Rick to hang in there and give us six innings.

Okay, Rick came in there here in the third. Knocked Figgins and Smoak back.

What else can go wrong? Two blown calls against us. This crew is not distinguishing itself this week.

Very hard to play against 13 players on the other team. (9 + 4 umps.)
Figgins was out on the steal. laird was safe at first. Porcello did not receive several strkie calls on several pitches, especially against Ichiro.

Umpires didn’t misplay the fly ball to right. They also didn’t swing at ball 4. Boesch did. Got to play better!

Top of the 9th inning and we have Benoit matched up with Olivo who has 2 hrs
in six career at bats.

And a SO this time!

Another loss 5-4. They haven’t scored more than 4 runs in a game since April 15 5-2 against the White Sox and April 12 7-2 against the Rays. On to New York. They will be very lucky to break .500 for the month of April. Luckily the Indians lost today and the White Sox will face the resurgent? Red Sox with Phil (no-hit) Humber on the mound.

Just heard Inge is released and Eldred is coming up. I don’t know anything else but something had to be done and now something is done. No matter how Inge played the last few seasons, it is always a shame when someone plays their career for a team and does so much for the community goes out on a sour note – I always want those guys to end on a decent year with lots of applause, instead he went out hitting terrible and hearing boos. Sad all the way around. Same sad I have for Maggs and Guillen not having a curtain call moment.

Eldred is swinging a hot bat at AAA – see what he does, I assume as our dh? Not sure his position, I think he was mainly dh for the Hens.

i know he can pinch hit better than inge too!

Let’s remember Maggs hitting like crazy last September and into the playoffs until that final injury took him from us. Guillen WOW that epic battle with Darth Weaver and he took him deep to make Verlander a winner in the battle of the Pitching Titans. Inge came back from the minors and helped us get to ALCS.. This year was tough but he did have that game winning dinger. Always best to remember the good and not dwell on the negative. All three guys were knocked out with mounting injuries. It happens.

Brad Eldred is 6’6″ tall, 270 lbs and is a DH/1b @ Toledo. Ooops now Detroit.

Hrm, can Eldred handle the 5 spot? Maybe move Young back up in front of Cabrera to the 2 spot and Boesch down to 6th?

That’s a good shuffle that makes sense.

I also feel bad for the way Inge’s departure happened. But, it was a business decision. Thanks Brandon for all you have done on a personal level for this community. And I’ll always remember when you told that sick child that would would hit a home run for him in the next game……and you did. What a special moment.
I think the Tigers will come to life against the Yankees.

Another disappointing day at the park. Can’t hit, can’t pitch weak fielding! Not a recipe for winning tats for sure. Your right Rich ths umpiring crew had a problem with calls at first all week. That eing said there are several hitters on ths team who are not performing! Probably will get humiliated in NYC this weekend.
Regarding Inge I know he needed to go, but it sure is sad to me.

Dombrowski: “We just feel, at this point, we’re trying to add some offense.”
Did not expect to hear the GM utter these words in April, based on the makeup of the team in spring training. Offense seemed to be among least of concerns.

So guys, you got your wish. Blame someone else now. I will always bleed Tiger Blue.
I’m glad your whipping boy is gone. This team has a whole bunch of problems that don’t start with BI. AAA players age 31, are AAA players for a reason. Elred is not the answer.

Can we go back to blaming Leyland now?

IMO the skipper accused the masses of blaiming the recent woes on BI – and i think that is an incorrect assessment of the situation by the skipper.
I don’t accuse BI more than 1/25th of the problem of why we are losing. HOWEVER, if you are batting sub 0.100 then you have to go. The fact he wasn’t being cut was the problem – a management problem. And that kinda bullspit sucks and is the real reason the fans were so upset. Oh and Brandon makes 6 million dollars.

Eldred appears to be another Mike Hessman, but without the glove. Maybe they’re hoping to catch him while he’s in the groove. I’m sure he’ll be in the lineup tomorrow night.
Disappointed in Boesch even before today’s game. He’s trying for the longball too much and not doing any real hitting. He really butchered the fly that led to the winning run. If he’s going to sell out for homers, he needs to be out of the 2-hole.

On Eldred, I hope he is given a chance at full-time DH and see if he can remind us more of Marcus Thames back in 2006. If they give him the at bats he could hit 20 homers. Agree with your assessment of Boesch. Oh, with Eldred at DH we have three outfielders that better start hitting because Dirks will replace the weakest link out there.

Just saw the news about Inge. Sad, but it was inevitable. Raburn may be next but I think they’ll wait to see if he ever starts hitting. Enough. Can they wait until August when he usually comes alive? The Tigers need a 2nd baseman. It doesn’t look like they will give it to Santiago and he has been hitting better than Inge and Raburn. Maybe they could trade Young for a decent 2nd baseman since DY is probably gone after this season anyway.

Just a dumb thought, play Ramon everyday until he wears out as management predicts and bring Raburn off a Florida beach for the second half.
Inge and management handling the sad situation with typical class all round.
My ex-business partner always lamented that his prior corporate life never led to a big payday out.

But for Jackson , Laird and Cabrera no one in the field is doing the work.
Half of Jackson his has been xBases. And he has 1 BB for each two hit.Great defense as ever
Cabrera is hitting for average and with power. Laird is 50/50 CS.
Avila has allowed 14 SB with 6 CS but bad throws and his attitude in the field is not the best. Not running with the grounder on Wed with bases loaded would have been punished by the Kangaroo´s court in old times. You have to run always.
Fielder is subpar in defense. He must extend his body. The controversial calls on Wed were all safe . He was at fault for losing that fraction that made the out possible.
Boesch and Kelly( he was short of pulling a Raburn) are also below average in the OF.
Peralta is a reliable fileder a 280 batter with some power. Only the power is lacking. He is doing what he is expected to do. Having a regular 2b would help him
Young has no glove but he compensate with a strog arm . Impatient hitter with power. Nobody could expect more from him

I’ve noticed lately that Jhonny sometimes has that leg kick that Jackson finally got rid of. Never noticed him doing that last year. This year it looks like he’s tinkering with his approach to hitting.

True about Avila running and the kangaroo court. Does anyone run hard out of the box anymore? They seem to decide after dropping the bat where they will end up. Don’t see guys anticipating a possible botched play. I see a lot of potential triples turned into doubles by not running hard all the way. It’s not that far, fellas.

Not all of them dog it, but even one is too many. Just drop the bat and run like hell. That’s what the good teams do.

Prince hasnt won me over yet. Hitting hasnt been explosive and his fielding i call subpar. At some point he had better start being what was hyped about.

It’s probably a good time for the Tigers to get out of town.
