Brennan just might get a big fly today.
Cabby has looked very solid at 3rd IMO.
Prince has been a good Fielder too. Nice pick-up on the DP from AJ yesterday.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after being hit in the head with a batted ball while standing in the Rays bullpen during Detroit Tigers batting practice. he was taken off the field on a cart yo!

Best of luck to him. Concussions can kill sports careers.

certainly i hope he gets better 100%. Was he scheduled to pitch against us on thursday?

Tim, I agree. The SOC was lucky. Why did Raburn not bunt?

he tried at first then stopped with 2 strikes i think

Raburn squared to bunt, but did not force it. The count was 3-0 and he got the green light after 3-1. That at bat is why baseball is so great, it had many subplots within a single at bat. And for the criticism that Raburn’s glove gets, his at bat was very good.

Hellickson wasn’t scheduled to pitch this series.

Sure would be nice for the club to score JV some runs. Sometimes they tend not to do that. A 2 run lead is not a secure one regardles who is pitching.
And we are getting nearer to decision time for JL. I almost think if he gets through without any trouble in the 8th, JL might just let him go again.

Well, that was easy. 5 pitches? Leave him in JL.

A big reason they don’t score a lot of runs for him is he’s usually going against the other teams ace.

Is this one of those ‘pride comes before a fall’. I sure hope we can overcome.

Man, this game sure took at turn after 8 terrific innings of pitching. Too bad, do we have any more magic left in our bats to salvage this?

I should add we do have the right folks for it, the way AJax has been going it is a shame he isn’t first up!

81 pitches by JV through 8 innings. JV, DS and Papa throw 53 combined in the 9th.

Well they better start. You can’t waste performances like that.
I turned the game off after the Zobrist hit off Papa Grande.
That 2 run lead scared the he!! out of me but I think it was right to leave JV try to get that decision. Not sure why things fell apart for him–couldn’t seem to rely on the curve much at the end I guess.
No way I bring in Schlereth there though. He is unproven in pressure situations and is far to unpredictable. Sure enough he walks a guy after he was ahead 0-2.
Papa is not the same Papa as last year.
I realize this means we won’t go undefeated this year and all but it sure let the air out of the balloon in a hurry. Ouch.

It brings everyone down to earth, if anyone had indeed left earth. Verlander went away from his gameplan in the 9th and paid for it. Then Leyland didn’t immediately go to his best pitchers (Dotel, Benoit, Valverde), opting to play matchup with Schlereth. I didn’t like that decision at the time he made it and still don’t. Unless we’ve got sick relievers out there, go with your best guys in the 9th and leave the matchups for earlier while you still have recovery room.
.
Okay, now comes what could be a rough stretch with Smyly, Scherzer, and Wilk starting the next three.

Obviously “Ole Smokey” still hasn’t learned that Valverde has trouble in non-save situations. It was proven several times last year. Of course they are not going to win every game but this one hurt after the great effort by Verlander for 8 innings. A lot will depend on the hitting in the next 3 games because the starting pitchers have many question marks.

Yes, they can be at .500 by saturday
Schleret ? in the nith? . Another player that make you wonder why is he given so many chances to fail and remain in the team
if he was to use Valverede call him to start the 9th.Or after the first blink by Verlander.
Now, with 2 rookies and scherzer who pitched extremely bad last year outside CoPa

Is Benoit among the sick? That was actually the place to use him, after Verlander got shot down.

Thomas DFA.

Clete’s DFA should have been appearant with no starts and Dirks being effective. On a quick note i was at opening day and i have never heard a more resounding Booing then when Inge was announced. How quickly the worm turns. How many rallies will he kill before they drop the DFA hammer on him as well.

Thomas will be another player giveaway. Won’t get anything for him.
.
So Leyland says he brought in Schlereth to get Joyce out of the game. At least we have the reason. Myself, I’d think more about who I am bringing into the game than which opposing player I’m getting out of the game.
.
It’s strange how Verlander reverted to his younger self today. Before he matured, he always tried to blast himself out of tight spots. Did he throw one changeup in the 9th?

One thing about JV—he is likely his own worst critic and I would be surprised if he didn’t learn something today. He has a need to excel and today was a kick in the gut. The boys need to put some runs on the board for him. Just excusing it as him facing the other teams top pitcher doesn’t wash. They scored a whack of runs off Beckett didn’t they?

Verlander is the fouth best player according to MLB. It is for him to shutdown the other team, Ace or not pitching for them.
An Ace do what Carlton did in 1973 ,26 wins with a team that won 58.
If he needed a LHP in the 9th, Coke was there. Or was he unavailable?.

Well for sure Schlereth was one of the worst possible choices. JL does tend to try to make a situation create a better player out of guys he thinks have potential. Schlereth is not ready for prime time—that was prime time.
The concerning thing to me is Valverde. He is not throwing his splitter much anymore and his fastball is just that, a fastball—waiting to be timed by the hitter after throwing it incessantly. JV 1 and JV 2, both paid for that.
Bueno Suerte Clete.

How about if we summarize the first six games this way. We lead the majors in BA, runs scored, fielding percentage, and the pitchers have held the opposition to four runs or less in five of six games. We have seven starters hitting over .280 and one of the two starters scuffling had four RBIs today. And RRcan look forward to playing in Chicago this weekend. Most managers would love to have JLs current situation.
