Sunday: Tigers (ss) at Astros

I’m at the Tigers-Astros today to watch Drew Smyly make his first start for the big club. Paul Hagen will be covering the Tigers-Phillies game for MLB.com.

It’s currently raining hard at Osceola County Stadium, but the forecast calls for skies to clear in time to get this game in. Prince Fielder is already scheduled to DH, so I wouldn’t expect any lineup adjustments for the wet turf.

Smyly isn’t the only Tigers prospect starting in this game. Nick Castellanos will get the start at third base. Jim Leyland originally planned on having Danny Worth start, but he’s dealing with some sort of soreness in his side.

I’m at KIssimmee too. Haven’t been there since 2008 when Wandy Rodriguez also started, got hurt, then the game was rained out.

Was that the game that Nate Robertson just about slipped off the mound and they kept playing?

I don’t remember Nate slipping, but he did start that game so that’s probably the one. I seem to recall someone, Magglio I think, going deep in the first.

Okay, confirming my reply below, my wife remembers Nate slipping. It was a nasty night.

Any word on a date for first cuts?

That game never came close to getting off the ground. I got to see where my seat was and that was it. Looking forward to seeing Smyly tomorrow now. Both times I’ve gone to Kissimmee have been rainouts. Still raining.

Rich you should probably keep Kissimmee out of your plans next year!

I enjoy visiting the other ballparks down here, and usually the schedule dictates what games we can attend. This year we’re limited to today’s rainout and the game next Monday in Clearwater. Everything else at Lakeland. We’ll probably see the Nationals play an evening game with the Braves at Disney, making that day a doubleheader for us. There’s usually one big rain day every year and unfortunately, today was it.

They are showing the replay of the other Tiger’s game today at Midnight tonight on MLB Network. Ended in a tie. I’m starting to wonder about the 5th starter.

It’s in the 60s up here in Michigan. Wahoo! We’ve all got spring fever! Go Tigers!

I’m starting to wonder about Thomas and Dirks. Can Patterson actually squeeze himself into contention?

I would’ve liked to see Castellanos get some at bats this spring. Strieby is doing well, but all that means is that he’s probably trade-bait.
