Probable lineup for Friday vs. Fla. Southern

The Tigers always start their regulars against Florida Southern, even if they’re only in the game for an inning or two, and this year is no different. Here’s the tentative lineup Jim Leyland has for Friday’s unofficial spring opener:

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Brennan Boesch, RF
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B
  5. Delmon Young, LF
  6. Alex Avila, C
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  8. Andy Dirks, DH
  9. Ryan Raburn, 2B

Andy Oliver will start.

If JL holds true to form, that’s your opening day lineup right there. Alternates right to left throughout. Good one.

that’s what i said, too, when i saw it

The bottom of that lineup could change. It certainly will change a lot during the course of the season. I think Raburn will get the 2B job, outside chance Ramon and almost no chance for Brandon. Clete could surprise but Andy just may be coming into his own.

I wonder what people think about having Dirks as the DH? Does he have a lot of promise at the plate. I remember he had an excellent Spring Training last year, but I tracked some of his stats last year and they did not seem to turn heads.

What do you all think?

grrr. DY in LF and Dirks as DH. How is this a good thing?

I actually think that is a smart move by JL who doesn’t want Delmon to be getting a premature message as to what his role might very well end up being. Obviously Dirks is heads and shoulders a better fielder but this is the 1st game and it is against a college team. Why get Delmon thinking negatively?

Since Josh Beckett would be the opposite pitcher in the first game, Santiago is a better option in second.
Young has 54 assists and 16 DP in the LF. He leads MLB in assists since 2007If he reach the ball, beware.
His FA 979. Dirks 985.

I shouldn’t have said “opening day lineup.” It’s actually a peek into how JL sees ‘em stacking up. He rarely uses the exact same lineup more than 7 or 8 times in a season. At this point in time, it seems obvious that if Dirks and Young were in the batting order, Delmon would be the DH. The top seven spots in the above batting order is what you can expect to see a lot of.

I wonder if Dirks becomes an every day player. He rotates with Austin as the leadoff based on righty/lefty.

I don’t think so. AJ will be an every day player and leadoff. No question about it.
