Tigers bring back Brent Dlugach on minor-league deal

Before the Tigers had Danny Worth as their defensive-minded middle infield prospect, they had Brent Dlugach, the former University of Memphis shortstop who spent September of 2009 with the Tigers as a late-inning replacement at shortstop. Detroit traded him to the Red Sox last offseason to create space on the 40-man roster.

Two offseasons later, they have him again. The Tigers have re-signed Dlugach to a minor-league contract, adding infield depth to the organization at the upper levels.

Dlugach announced his return to the Tigers last Friday on Twitter. The Tigers confirmed the deal on Monday.

Dlugach had an injury-shortened season last year at Triple-A Pawtucket, batting .222 with eight doubles, six home runs and 25 RBIs in 63 games. His best year as a pro came in that aforementioned 2009 campaign, when he hit .294 at Triple-A Toledo with 36 doubles, four triples, nine homers, 59 RBIs and a .795 OPS. He’ll turn 29 next month.

Apparently no invite to spring training for Brent. Danny Worth is in a very good position to make the team as it stands.

lol. rhymes was/is a better fit in detroit than brent

Good grief, I cannot wait ’til ST. We’ll see the usual photo ops of patrick and jim every day. Probably, lots of Prince pitctures. (I can kinda understand the poor relationship between he and his dad). That man just can’t shut-up. Obnoxious imo.
One of these years, maybe, just maybe I’ll make it down to Lakeland for ST. That is high on my wish list.

I remeber Brent had a pretty good spring a year or so ago. Right up there in leading his ST team in HRs. Another shortstop in the mold of Tiger shortstops with good glove and potential but cursed with injuries. Tony Giarratanno (sp) also.
I think Worth will show us something this spring.
BTW-thanks Jason for the article on the Tiger MLB site about the Ignacio Valdez
signing. Here’s a bit more: http://www.dplbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=322%3Atigers-a-dpl-all-star-ignacio-valdez-agree-to&catid=1%3Alatest-news&Itemid=1

The performance by Dirks has got to do a lot for his confidence. I had the impression that he grew tentative as last season wore on. Might be dead wrong, but that’s how it appeared to me. He’s got a lot of upside. However, if both he and Clete Thomas have good springs, Clete is the one with no options when it comes time to decide who goes north. That one bears watching. So does Turner vs Smyly vs Below for that rotation spot. As it all stands now, anyway.

As usual, good points and observations Richard.

SO seven relievers will probably make the 25 man roster.
And we know 5 guys
VV, Benoit back end
Coke, Schlereth for lefties
Doc OC, for righties

But who else? Colin Balester, Duane Below fighting for the LONGMAN position

and one of these guys who can pitch against righties….
Luis Marte, David Pauley, Brayan Villarreal and Adam Wilk

any thoughts?

I guess it will be sorted out during ST. I’d like to see Villarreal calm down a little, as he’s pretty spastic out there. I’m intrigued with Pauley as the long man, in that his best performances last season seemed to come in multiple inning outings. Balester pitched up there in Washington but I’ll have to admit I didn’t see much of him. Probably everyone you named here will see big league time this season.
Man, I can’t wait to get down there and check it all out. Got tickets for eight games.

Andy Dirks was selected as part All Star team of the Caribbean Series.
.250 .296 tied for the lead in RBIs

Very happy for him to get that kind of recognition. Livin the high life in DR. Maybe a spot in the lineup for him. Congratulations, Andy!
