ALDS Game 3: Tigers vs. Yankees

Remember the lineup the Tigers had out there against CC Sabathia Friday night? Well, the lineup tonight is a little different. Ramon Santiago, 7-for-24 off Sabathia lifetime, starts over Ryan Raburn, 4-for-24. Santiago also bats second.

“To be honest with you, neither Jhonny [Peralta] or Raburn have hit CC at all,” Jim Leyland said in his pregame press conference. “So we felt like, well, we’ll play one of those guys and then play Santiago to try to get a little offense, and as that turns out, it gives us our better defense as well. So Peralta and Santiago were the choices for that reason.”

TIGERS

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (4-for-14, double, triple, HR regular season off Sabathia)
  2. Ramon Santiago, 2B (7-for-24)
  3. Delmon Young, LF (3-for-24, seven K’s, 1 postseason HR)
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B (9-for-16, 2 HR, 11 RBIs)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (6-for-25, 2 HR, 3 RBIs)
  6. Magglio Ordonez, RF (19-for-71, 5 doubles, 3 HRs)
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS (1-for-17, 3 walks, 5 K’s)
  8. Alex Avila, C (1-for-7, 3 K’s)
  9. Brandon Inge, 3B (11-for-58, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, 15 K’s)

P: Justin Verlander

YANKEES

  1. Derek Jeter, SS (10-for-28 off Verlander)
  2. Curtis Granderson, CF (1-for-6, HR)
  3. Robinson Cano, 2B (4-for-23)
  4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B (4-for-21, HR, 4 RBIs)
  5. Mark Teixeira, 1B (3-for-22, HR, 3 RBIs, 7 K’s)
  6. Nick Swisher, RF (8-for-48)
  7. Jorge Posada, DH (7-for-21, 5 RBIs)
  8. Russell Martin, C (2-for-5)
  9. Brett Gardner, LF (3-for-8)

Has Kenny Rogers thrown out the first pitch yet? I can hardly wait to see him. Be a shame if we don’t get to watch.

That’s not how I like to see the game start. Hopefully just first inning jitters.

well at the game looks as though JV doesn’t have his A game so far, what a buzz kill. By the way Kenny looks good.

Geez–I’m ticked off at JV for wasting as curve ball (3rd in a row) to ARod. He really had him set up for a high fastball..
Curtis mashed it–had 2 strikes on him. AJ is nnot coming up with those catches he did before..
JV not sharp, NY did the right thing by coming out swinging.
This is the 1st inning all Tiger fans were afraid of.
No we get to watch AJ lead off with a K.

Gosh Ramon really first pitch you ground into a double play.

I’m a friggin basket case.

Can’t get a run.

Ramon successfully kiled that inning.

I just don’t get Leyland. He gets a gift with AJ finally leading off a game and getting on and then he porceeds to cotradict the whole idea behind batting Ramon wnd by swinging away. I don’t care if you are down by 2 runs you play for that early rund to cut the lead. You bunt!!!!
Plain and simple.
Leyland outsmarted himself.
VMart is “off” from the regular season. I hope he can get it back togerther and return to that MVP caliber form he was in.

He’s got a hole drilled in his toe and injected with pain medication. He can’t feel right.

It does seem strange that Leyland specifically stated his reasoning for placing Santiago 2nd then didn’t follow through on that. It might have been a missed sign, but Ramon should have enough baseball smarts to bunt. Either way, big mistake in a big game.

And another Tigers double play Terrific. What te heck guys.

Not so bad at all. They did the same with the Yankees.

A hit would be nice!

CC’s has already given up almost 10% of the walks he gave up all season.
.
C’mon, Ramon.

I’m psyched we finally got some hit and more importantly run, but my god another double play???

Ramon, better than a bunt!

The bunting has been awful. The DP’s have been awful.
That many walks and only 2 runs?

Ramon pulled the bat back on the 1st pitch an that was the one he could have bunted quite easily. He came through with a solid single though.
AJ should be spanked for trying to bunt for a hit with a strike on him there. That was downright stupid.
.
Can’t afford this many mistakes. And DP’s are mistakes too..

Well, so many walks, Cabby 1-0 , tries to pull the next pitch, DP. Why doesn’t he take a strike? Ok, that’s it until after the game. –Dave

Ordonez is really hitting the ball. Togh breaks in his at bats in the 4th.
Peralta tring to pull everything is getting nothing done.
Avila is lost.
Hopefully that inning does not fire up CC or his offense because it was a good one for the Yanks.

Avila looks absolutely lost at the plate.

Well the fans are fired sure fired up Andr righhtly so. JV was dominant that inning.
Now these hitters have to start doing their job. And quit stranding runners or wasting opportunities.

Yep and yep. BRANDON for alds mvp!

Many of here felt Ramon should have been in the 1st game against CC.
We got the lead now and it will not be easy to keep it. We need AJ playing a couple of steps deeper in CF. We need one more AB from Magglio then Kelly.
And we need an economy of pitches from JV to enable as close to a complete game as possible.

Can’t remember being this tense since the 7th game in ’68!!
Must be getting old.
I must say, that damn Jeter is a cool cat up there.

It looks like a bunt is secret Tigers weapon in playoff. That’s why Leyland didn’t use it in regular season :)

Let’s hope Avila is OK.
Kelly has been magicl for us this year.
Sure wish Brandon would have been able to get that other run in but without him today we
would be in a world of hurt today.
I full expect him to make a game preserving play out there at 3rd before this is over
JV’s pitch count is in good shape

Too bad about the 7th and the 1st JV was dominating otherwise. I am shocked rght now, I can believe he did that. This one will be tough for us there pen is better than ours, especially with Benoit and Valverde unavailble because of yesterday I presume.

I hate to say it but I predicted the HP aand I predicted the ball in the gap on the 3-2 pitch. I could feel it. The key was Posada. Too many breaking balls and losing him changed Justin. That is the next level Justin needs to get to. Not to let an isolated walks with 2 out affect his overtall game.

JV is just about done. Short leash necessry.
He is in uncarted territory with the short rest.
JL should know this and should have 2 guys ready at the very 1st sign of deterioration.
I think he’s had it.
Fantastic job and he alone is responsible for the collapse last ining. If he can battle out of that great, but don’t hold your breat Leylans

JL will earn his salary in the bottom of the 9th (unless we score 3 or 4).
He’ll be tempted to put JV our there.
It may sound weird but I think I’d be inclined to go with Benoit. VV threw too many pitches and he just may not be sharp enough to get the job done tonight.
I don’t envy JL right now.

Hit Jhonny in the ribs. Now, I’m mad!

He’s putting Papa in there after all the pitches he threw last night? Papa, you my prayers.

I don’t want him throwing too many pitches. Let’s hope for a fast out. OMG, I can’t stand it. We gotta win.

YES!

Yeaaaahhhhhh!!! Here comes morning in Moscow, and I feel like it is one of the best morning in my life! Congratulations to all fans with this victory. Oh… GO TIGERS!

Yippie. Go Tigers!!!!

That’s pretty cool Marat. Now I have to get up in 5 hours.
.
Too tired to say much. You said it Dan. I’m gettin’ too old for this. I don’t think I ever shook so much for so long. Way too much adrenalin and just couldn’t control it. Could not even sit while the Yanks were batting.
.
Very quickly and then off to bed. Keys to the game besides JV of course. Santiago and Inge. And I don’t want to take anything away from Delmon. What a shot that was. But it is just plain perfect when you can get this kind of production from your best defensive players. You cannot go wrong. Kudos to JL for playing those two.

Yes. GO TIGERS!!!!

All I can say is, we better offer Ramon a decent contract for next season. And give him the 2nd base job.

I just got home from game and wow. It was my 1st ever playoff baseball game. Who would have thought santiago and inge would provide so much offense. And im darn glad leyland put kelly in for defensive replacement. Ump made me mad when valverde was pitching. Even the announcers were upset with the lack of strike calls on definite strikes. im glad im not coach because i would rip ump a new one on those bad calls.

Momentum is only as long as tomorrow’s pitcher.
We need Ricky P to be on his game and some DPs to pull us through the hard times tomorrow.
Don’t want to go back to NYC.
Let’s get Avila going tomorrow.

That’s great—From Russia With Love!

A team for everyone—Venezuela, Canada, Russia, and the USA.

I know what you are saying Dan from the previous post – I have gone the other way not wanting to tempt fate by saying which players are due. Your method seems to be working.
I will say though it is great to have a team going well despite three regulars with 2 hits from 29 post season AB’s (.07). Hopefully not injury related.
Also, don’t forget the land of Oz.

Wow, still trying to process that game last night. I was watching on our smaller tv while my husband was watching football in the other room. He went to bed but I had to stay put, I was afraid to move an inch during that game. It is something how Verlander can be terrific and have problems in the same game. I think 11 strikeouts but 4 earned runs – crazy. I predicted the first inning, I figured he would be too amped up, I also figured he would settle down and find his groove which he did. I did not predict the 7th inning and surely did not predict Big Potato coming in to pitch, what a wild ride that was. Terrific surprises from Inge and Santiago – not so surprised by Santiago but by his “sneaky power”. And Delmon pulled through for us again. Still not sure why Brandon didn’t try to throw home last night, he has had 2 plays like that but I am not a good baseball analyst to know if that was a legit play to try.

So, Ricky gets the ball tonight and let’s try to win it at home. Who do you all think will be our closer tonight? I am guessing Benoit. Good relievers will be Coke and Q for tonight, hopefully Rick can get a lot of ground balls, so I think we need Ramon and Inge in the lineup again tonight.

My biggest complaint last night which ended up being brilliant was Maggs being taken out in the 6th inning when he was due up next. I think our defensive replacements are too early, but then Kelly gets up there, bunts for a base hit and scores from 1st which of course Maggs never would have done, although had Maggs gotten on Kelly would have pinch ran. I give Jimmy credit, some of his odd moves pan out even when I don’t agree. I still don’t think we take the bat out of Maggs hands too early. The person I wish at times we could replace for defense is Delmon, he scares me out there, he can’t make any plays he has to run much for, but we can’t take the bat out of his hands either, he has been way too important.

Enough rambling, looking forward to tonight – go tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that strike zone was amazingly small last night, but it was consistent which is all you can ask from an ump, the pitchers were well aware after the first few innings they weren’t getting anything on the edges called their way, although at the end Detroit pitchers got the benefit of a few high strike calls which surprised me.

Still amazed at how dominant JV can be when he gets in his groove, but he scares me when he throws so many 100 mph.

Oh, and I miss Rod and Mario, I swear these guys don’t do enough homework. I can’t remember the specifics but I know a few times last night they said things about a few players that were way off base.

Seems like almost everyone misses Mario and Rod. Everyone is complaning about that godawful announcers on TBS (except NY fans). Hopefully, there won’t be quite so many complaints about our hometown boys, Mario and Rod. I still listened on the radio to Dan and Jim. They were great!
.
Jhonny had a big there, too, Don’t forget about that.
.
Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!1

Yeah, Ron Darling drives me crazy. Can’t stand his commentary. Smoltz isn’t too bad, and the other guy doesn’t seem to be able to say much because Darling can’t keep his yap shut. I sure wish we could have Rod & Mario for these games, but I agree that Dan and Jim are terrific.
