ALDS Game 2: Tigers at Yankees

Remember years ago when Freddy Garcia was somehow so effective during day games that people dreaded him? Former Tigers manager Alan Trammell used to call him “Day Game Freddy.” That was a long time ago.

Two hitters might hold the key today. Magglio Ordonez is 17-for-52 (.327) off Garcia for his career. He has just one home run in that stretch, but six doubles. Ordonez gets the start, and remember, manager Jim Leyland said he will not pinch-hit for Ordonez.

Miguel Cabrera, on the other hand, is 9-for-23 with three homers off the fellow Venezuelan.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (4-for-18 off Garcia)
  2. Magglio Ordonez, RF (17-for-52, 6 doubles, 1 HR, 6 RBIs)
  3. Delmon Young, LF (3-for-10, 2 HRs, 5 RBIs)
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B (9-for-23, 3 HRs, 6 RBIs)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (7-for-30, 2 HRs, 5 RBIs)
  6. Alex Avila, C (3-for-9, 2 2Bs, 3 Ks)
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS (7-for-24, 2 2Bs, 1 HR, 4 RBIs)
  8. Wilson Betemit, 3B (1-for-3, HR)
  9. Ramon Santiago, 2B (0-for-5)

P: Max Scherzer

  1. Derek Jeter, SS (2-for-9 off Scherzer)
  2. Curtis Granderson, CF (3-for-11, 3 Ks)
  3. Robinson Cano, 2B (1-for-8, HR)
  4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B (0-for-8, 3 Ks)
  5. Mark Teixeira, 1B (3-for-10, 2B, HR)
  6. Nick Swisher, RF (2-for-6, 2 BBs, 3 Ks)
  7. Jorge Posada, DH (2-for-8, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs)
  8. Russell Martin, C (3-for-15, 2B)
  9. Brett Gardner, LF (0-for-6, 2 BBs, 3 Ks)

P: Freddy Garcia

This is where Leyland must earn his paycheck. He needs to expand the strike zone at Yankee Stadium. Doug Fister walked 2 guys last night, why… cause the Yankees work umpires so strike zones are tiny. That is why games in NYC last 26 hours (at least Game 1 did).
If the Yankees get small strike zones, they pounce. If they are forced to swing at pitchers pitches, we have a chance.

That cuts both ways. Umpire Randazzo last night was just plain bad, both ways. We’re going to have to do a better job of pitching with two strikes. Max has had a problem with that all year. We know Freddie will throw that slop up there and we’ve had better success hitting it lately. I also sort of think we play better at Yankee Stadium during day games.
That hit and run by Jeter last night seems to be causing a reaction on the internet. On that play, the middle infielders signal each other who will cover the bag. It’s usually an open mouth/close mouth signal. I’m pretty sure that Raburn is not making that decision, that would be Peralta. In any case, it’s a coin toss, 50-50. If Jeter is able to bounce that through the vacated side on command, there’s not much you can do. And just because John Smoltz said the secondbaseman should never cover the bag with Jeter up doesn’t necessarily make it true. That’s his opinion.
Hopefully the breaks will go our way today.

I agree with Smoltz there, Jeter goes opposite field too well to cover with 2B

I don’t like Raburn defensively much, but that play was in no way, his fault.
Leyland is proabbly right in playing Ordonez today. He’s seen Freddy a lot. But part of me is thinking that maybe Dirks might have been the grunt that comes up unexpectedly big in the play-offs.
I felt yesterday was a must win game. Not sure what that makes this one.

Do or die? Now or never? Apocalypse now? 🙂
One thing JL must do is play Santiago at 2ndbase tomorrow against CC. Raburn can’t hit him, so why put him in there? Ramon is 3 for 9.

Hopefully the Tigers are better than the Lions today.

Stopped by for lunch. Everyone (all my Tiger friends) said the same thing. Should have let Fister finish the inning.
Good luck today, guys. Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Getting squeezed in the first inning! Come on Max!

The pitch trax is either way off or the umpire is.
Alex is not playing good ball. He needs to dial up the intensity level a bit.
Must do better against freddy Garcia.
AJ start the gme off as usual.

I have to wonder what the Yankees and Garcia are paying the ump for this strike zone?

We are at the stage of the game where men are separated from boys.
JL can’t let himself be influenced by Max’s ‘success” this game. If he shows signs of falling apart, he has to get him out of there. I’m not saying I am seeing that.
We need this team to start hitting the ball. This is ridiculous.
Even VMart is off.

I should be happy but I’m not. The Tigers got a couple but they had 3 important batters choke at the dish.
Delmon has to start getting the guy in from 3rd with nobody out. I can think of at least 3 times recently where he he has struck out in that situation.
Avila is simply not having good at bats and was also in a position to get a run how from 3rd with 1 out.
The Yanks gave up 2 but come away from that inning with a little momentum, if you can believe it.

I gotta give JL credit for being proactive and taking Scherzer out. I figured him to make a mistake and not take him out soon enough. And I’ll give him credit for leaving his comfort zone and bringing in Benoit early and not going to a lesser pitcher just because it was the 7th.
We still need to figure out the 8th and it would be real nice if the club can actually do some hitting here and get a couple of runs.
AJ is driving me a bit insane.

AJ is driving me nuts too. And for that matter so was Eric Cooper and the announcers. Does anyone else get sick of their NY bias?

OMG! Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr Reliable! Ouch. Twice leaving 4 men on and looking bad doing it.
That part of the order is very unsatisfying right now.

I haven’t posted here in a few years. It is great to see the Tigers close to winning this game.

Benoit just worked two huge innings. He answered all the people who griped at him earlier in the year!

Joaqiun did a great job. Like Max before him. Waiting for Big Potato!

My apologies to Max Scherzer, I didn’t know if he still had it in him?

JB was very good. Dominating even. Curtis ran into one–everything else DB threw had a purposea and was effective.
If I am JL I amputting Dirks in for Delmon in the bottom of 9

Although in Valverdes defense ump called some pitches from Valverde balls that he was cLling strikes all afternoon? Then Avila slips really are you kidding me?

Avila falling down and Inge not backing him up Pete Rose-style: both inexcusable even though we won in the end.

So many contributors! Miguel Cabrera with a huge game when we most needed it, probably his biggest game in a Tiger uniform. Ordonez going 3 for 3. Kelly scoring the fourth run and driving in the fifth (which loomed large in the ninth).

Now we have the advantage: JV won’t be rattled and should take well to pitching at home. Then the Yankees have to start A.J. Burnett against Porcello in Game 4.

Ooooph! No matter how hard it was. It’s done. We win. Go Tigers!

There should be “won” instead of “win”. Sorry for my bad English. I’m trying to write without translator🙂

Don’t forget Kelly’s catch to get that all important 1st out in the 9th.
No way I have Delmon Young playing LF in the bottom of the 9th. Has not occurred to JL that he can make a defensive replacment for someone not name Ordonez?
Anybody in Tiger fandom feel comfortable if a screamer were hit out to left in that last inning?
I saw that on-dec cirlcle happening. Saying ‘careful, careful” to my wife as it developed.. Avila was having trouble with that anyway with the rain. Inge should have anticipated something wrong happening, he has nothing else to do on a foul pop with 2 out!!!
But seriously, what is wrong with baseball people and even having painted on-deck circles? Are we so logo driven and institutionalized that they just can’t have it chalked. It’s dangerous.
We were lucky to get this win IMO. We still are showing too many jitters.
The hitters have to start doing their job.
Avila, Peralta, Young and Jackson have to start having better at bats.
Thank you Max for the 2 hit shutout, I said yesterday we needed him to twirl a 3-hit shutout in order to get back in to this!
Now let’s hope JV can keep his act together and not get “jittery”.

Thanks again to Don Kelly. And a reluctant thanks to Valverde for at least throwing strikes to Cano.

def. totally agree with replacing delmon young. Inge AND the ppl in the dugouts should have done something to prevent that situation with Alex.

Unfortunately Benoit and Valverde are probably unusable for tomorrow? And that is not good!

Benoit and Valverde will be avialbale today.

Let’s just say I stopped “enjoying” the game after the Avila slip. That looked for all the world like one of those Yankee Stadium legendary miracles in the making. Couldn’t have handled it. I’m whipped. The Todd Jones save in game 2 of 2006 was a nailbiter, but this was beyond tense.
We’re assured of two games in Detroit and I’m driving up tomorrow. See all you fans there. Maybe we can get in on a clinching party.

AJax hustled all the way for the third run. He run again with Magglio and went into third with the ball in the shallow leffield.
He deserves the Golden Glove and I think he is right playing short at Copa but he not there but in the sandbox.
Magglio 3 for 3
Miguel digged for oil with Garcia and found a HR and 3 rbis. The heroe of the movie
Scherzer a QS on the road from a pitcher who is now 4-0 lifetime against the Yankees.
Benoit oustanding like he has been since may. Especially setting the saving situtation for Valverde( Joke)
The bad:
Young must have made a greatter effort to keep the no hitter. It was the time for a sliding catch ( the game was open and the wall is near, they are not at Copa)
Damaso Blanco, who played third with SF commenting during the broadscast made the same observation Jason( the commenter) made:Inge must have been there covering Avila .( It is not Inge, no third base do that at this time)
Granderson was out,it was strike three not ball 3

And Kelly running and defense was outstanding too

In the 9th inning I went outside and mowed the lawn like a maniac. Couldn’t take the stress. My son called and called my cell, but I couldn’t hear it while mowing. He was scared I had a heart attack or something.

Since I don’t get TBS (believe it or not) I have been reduced to watching these two games on the mlb $3.99 special. It’s special all right. You can pick from about 6 camera views and the camera might follow the play or maybe not. The kicker was when the rain started, apparently the camera lens had no hood to keep the rain off. I’m watching through rain drops. At $3.99 I guess you get what you pay for. That won’t even buy a hot dog will it?
That last inning was not fun to watch at all. I ask myself why do I put myself through so much unneeded stress for a ball game? If you liked watching the bottom of the 9th you’re just plain nuts. But you did watch it didn’t you? Like watching the scary part in a horror movie. You know it’s coming and you just can’t look away. I guess Cano proved he was human today. Cabrera made those fans pay Pup, just like we hoped he would. My Tiger Magglio 3 for 3 and my other Tiger Santiago better remain in the lineup from here on. Nobody can bunt like he can, and he solidifies the IF. He outplayed Cano today. Kelly and Ordonez are a pretty good RF platoon ey?
No need to apologize Marat. Your comments are welcome here. We don’t always agree El Tigre, but enjoy your comments. It’s clear you’re a student of the game.
I’m thinking it’s advantage Tigers now.

Thanks, after following most of the 1000 games post 2003 here, it is easy to learn a little

Got to love playoff baseball. Thanks to Mr. Illitch for spending the cash to make it possible because there is nothing as exciting as these games. I thought I was gonna put a hole thru the floor pacing around the living room in the 9th.

I know Leyland won’t change anything now but Jackson is possibly the worst leadoff hitter I’ve ever seen. Don’t you want someone with a good on base percentage and who will put the ball in play to leadoff? He should be hacking at the first pitch everytime because he takes strike one way too often. It’s funny how the Yanks realized Grandy is not a good leadoff hitter yet Leyland never figured that one out.

Great game though and you have to feel pretty good with JV pitching at home and knowing that AJ Burnett will pitch game 4. Gotta wrap it up in 4 games though. Bad idea taking it back to NY for game 5.

Rich were are your seats? We will be there as well?

It is fun to be back in this forum again.

I recognize Dan and Marty from when I was posting a few years ago. Great to see you here.

I think I started posting back during the 2006 season possibly.

The last time I was posting there was a fan of the Tigers in Russia. I hope he is still around in this forum.

Yep. It’s me🙂

And good to Rich here also.

Good to see you back Owen.
The leadoff issue is a real problem. It’s not simply a matter of accepting a guy’s flaws. It is the fact that those flaws can be accepted at another spot in the lineup where it has a less deleterious effect.

Sure, I remember you, Owen. Welcome back. A lot of water under the Tiger bridge since then, hey?
When JL had Santiago bunt the second time, I was dead against it. Jackson is up next and he rarely drives in a run. Better to try a hit and run. Better yet to bat Jackson 9th followed by Santiago 1st, but that will never happen. Jackson’s speed is more than made up for by Ramon’s baseball smarts.
Inge should have come hard for that pop to Avila, but maybe Brandon wasn’t seeing it too well himself. It’s possible, as he’s usually much more aggressive. Alex was shakey but still on it until he hit that ridiculous skating rink they put down there.
Gk, we have section 344 on Monday and 326 on Tuesday. Wasn’t time to haggle for better, and I was glad to get anything. Actually I like 326. I see both games are now at 8:30. It will be a midnight celebration………I hope.

how do ppl feel about the burnett vs. porcello matchup on tuesday? Obviously much better than cc vs porcello but…….aj did pitch well against the rsox the other day lol

I take nothing for granted. Who would have thought that we’d lose the Fister game and win the Scherzer game in NY?

and for that matter, Al^2 ….not the guy in our pen i thought would have given up the granny

I listened to Dan and Jim. Too nice a day and too much work to do outside. Dan Dickerson is the best. Both those guys said they would have sent Avila. The turning point for Fister is when he threw a 2 stike pitch right down the middle to Gardner. That’s baseball. We got the win in NY. Go Tigers!

he is the best!

Will be interesting to see who gets the start at 2nd tomorrow. My guess—Raburn.
Funny how JL wil play somebody and justify it with the stats, when it suits him. Ramon’s stats against CC are good with only 1 K as I recall.
Raburn has K’d a bunch against him. Top that with very questionable defense one would be compelled to play Ramon. And I’d lead him off too.
With guys like Cano, Grandy, Swisher, Teixeira, Posada and Gardner ( and Jeter too!) able to whack the ball to the right side, I would much rather have Santiago manning the fort.
No room for “error” here.

agree 100% on santiago over raburn…..

Im greatly dissapointed in mlb allowing a potential injury causing plastic logo onto the playing field. That could have been a career ending ankle breaking slip. All star catchers are not expendable just to make another advertising buck off the ny logo. Or any team logo. The players union needs to pressure mlb to ban all non chalk emblems and logos from appearing on the playing field.

Im in 314 tommorrow. Awesome. And somewhere in 200s on wed. Go tigers.

Kenny Rogers is throwing out the first pitch.
