Thursday: Tigers at Indians

Brennan Boesch said last night he was holding out hope the swelling in his right thumb would go down enough that he could play Thursday, but manager Jim Leyland sounded like he was in no mood to take that chance. No word yet from the MRI exam or anything else, but the lineup is out and Boesch isn’t in there. Ryan Raburn starts in left field, batting second.

TIGERS

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Ryan Raburn, LF
  3. Magglio Ordonez, RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Victor Martinez, DH
  6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  7. Carlos Guillen, 2B
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Wilson Betemit, 3B

P: Justin Verlander

Not the most defensively skilled crew tonight but I’ll take it. Time to hit with men on base!

5 RHB against Carmona. Where is Dirks?
1st 4 batters are RHB. Interesting. Major philosophical change in the lineup (are we allowed to talk about that?) today.

Dirks did make a good catch and threw a runner out but he did not get a hit. Ryan is a better hitter than Kelly. Carlos is now rested and Ramon needs a breather. Wilson drove in a couple runs so he can play today. You see my logic don’t you Dan:)

Crystal!
Wrong initials though—aren’t you JL?

Random thoughts: Boesch’s injury shows the one problem I have with the trade last month – losing Caspar Wells. He would be a good replacement if it is a lingering issue. I think Wells is further along than Dirks.
Random thought 2, I saw that Justin Morneau is coming back next week. As a baseball fan this is good news, I like Morneau (even though he kills my Tigers.) He plays the game right.

Kelly isn’t a bad outfielder either

Kelly is a good outfilelder. However Wells has much more power and is a better defensive outfielder than anyone on the Tigers not named Austin.

be nice to see peralta step it up – hasn’t done well (.222) in the past several (7) days. and more importantly i’d like to see maggs bat WAAAY better (.067 in the past 7 days) – but he is being paid so he’s getting ABs regardless……

Is somone on the team not getting paid?

OH- 10 million dollars. If you’re getting 10M then you’re getting plenty of AB’s and maggs doesn’t have the number of AB’s to pronounce him “being platooned”

Carmona and his 5.19 ERA and only Jackson (8 ABs) and Cabrera have had any success against him. This isn’t being negative, this is stating the facts.
They usually start out with a patient approach against him, then I guess they get bored or something because they start swinging. Next thing you know, Carmona is pitching in the 7th inning. Verlander better throw a shutout. And he might want to make the Kipnis kid do a little dance in the batter’s box to welcome him to The Show.

It is time to face the facts. Martínez is already, a full time DH. They must call a second catcher like every other team.

They do need a backup catcher, we need to keep VMart as dh for the rest of the year. I know Kelly can do it in a pinch, but AA will be ready for the September callups to give him a break.
