Friday: Tigers vs. Mariners

As advertised, Ryan Raburn is out of the lineup tonight, with Ramon Santiago getting the start at second against Mariners rookie phenom Michael Pineda. Interestingly enough, Don Kelly stays in the two spot in the order with Santiago batting at the bottom. We’ll see how much of a difference it makes, the way Pineda is pitching. If he’s on, I get a feeling there isn’t much the Tigers can do about it but try to manufacture some offense. If he’s wild, which he hasn’t been as often lately, then Detroit’s going to have some scoring opportunities.

That, of course, is what made Friday’s loss a difficult one for the Tigers. Win that, and these matchups with Pineda and King Felix look a little less imposing. Now, you’re looking at having to win one of these next two games to get a split. For what it’s worth, it’s doable; the White Sox did it earlier this week. Of course, Seattle scored one run in each of those two games.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Don Kelly, 3B
  3. Brennan Boesch, RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Victor Martinez, DH
  6. Andy Dirks, LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Ramon Santiago, 2B

P: Max Scherzer

  1. Ichiro Suzuki, RF
  2. Brendan Ryan, SS
  3. Justin Smoak, 1B
  4. Adam Kennedy, 2B
  5. Miguel Olivo, C
  6. Carlos Peguero, LF
  7. Mike Carp, DH
  8. Chone Figgins, 3B
  9. Greg Halman, CF

P: Michael Pineda

While there is a valid argument to batting Avila 8th I would much prefer to see the lineup present itself more formidably to the starting pitcher by switching up Dirks
and Alex. I also think it would be a respecatable gesture by his manager to bat him higher in the lineup.

BTW—Curtis just hit an upper decker against the Tribe to put the Yanks up 2-0 in the 7th.

Curtis now tied for the lead in HRs with Bautista with 20!!
No wonder we all loved this guy when he was here. The austerity period that Illitch went through with getting rid of Curtis, Polanco and others really hurt this team.

I like AJ and I think he will be (and already is) good for this team. But, we should never have let Curtis Granderson out of our clutches.

Good baserunning there by Cabby in the 1st to set up that second run. Huge play. Smart ballplayer. Max looks good through two.

Saturday, right?

Dan Dickerson always interviews Leland before the game and Leland just wanted to reiterate that
Rab urn was not being benched as had been written by reporters after last night’s game. He said he just wanted to give him a day away to clear his head and try to figure things out himself instead of constantly going to Mclendon after every bat. Said it’s become a habit for Ryan to do that. Well, geesh, maybe that’s the answer to his hitting problems. Don’t count on Lloyd, figure it out yourself, Ryan.

Another word for what that: BENCHED.

Amen. If that isn’t the definition of being benched, what is?

20 homers for Curtis. I wonder if Dave and Jim ever envisioned Grandy hitting like he is in NY. He was such a beloved Tiger. Still hurts to see with another team. Thought he was gonna be one of our franchise guys.

Actually, Granderson is hitting very very close to his career norms. A few more homers early, but he hit 30 for us in 2009. I didn’t look up his splits, but I do hear that he’s hitting lefties better, so there’s that.

Would be nice to see Max get through this next inning. We just went through a momentum shift there in the 4th. Max struggled a bit (too many pitches) and Pineda picked it up a notch. So we need a shutdown inning badly.

Soirry I meant the 3rd.

BTW—I still wonder why Eric Wedge did not try to steal with Figgins in the 3rd with 2 out and 1st & 3rd.
Boy we got a couple of breaks that inning to help us out.

Cleveland did lose today so it would be really nice to see us best Pineda in this one tonight.

Better get that bullpen going JL.
Max is maxed.

6th inning and it looks like Max is starting to fall apart! It sees that is how it is goin.g in a few of his last oujtings. Looks okay for a while then bam! Let’s hope he figures it out and the tigers get a few more!

Scherzer is channeling his inner Verlander.

I hope we get some runs because I don’t have a good feeling about our bullpen. The BP has been good but they have a lot of guys that are due to get lit up.

Way to go Jhonny! Of course he has me to thank as I took him out of my fantasy baseball lineup and doing that is sure to get a hitter going. Hahahahaaha

Well done for Dirk , at least he advanced the runner to scoring postion

Maggs had a good one tonight in Toledo. Great thing to see is Austin Jackson getting an RBI hit on a 3-2 pitch. He has been one of the worst 3-2 hitters I have ever noticed.

Kelly is hitting the ball hard. He’s had some misfortune tonight but he is doing the job.

I suspect the club will send down Wilk when they recall Magglio. Gonzalez will remain the sacrificial lamb.
Dirks has cooled off quite a bit and has made a fair amount of easy outs lately, but they like his LHB in LF. I think he’ll stay, for now.

So triples now come in pairs?

Well tonight was and unexpected at the very least! Pineda was off tonight and Max was pretty darn good! Hitters all contributed and it made for a fun game to watch unlike that snooze fest I went to last night! Way to go guys.

That was an easy game to watch. I was pretty confident after the two runs in the first. I’ll bet the folks at the game had a very good time. It sure was a relaxing evening here. Looks like whatever they could see or saw with Scherzer was taken care of. Usually Max is pretty good at being his own pitching coach, which is impressive for a pitcher that young.
Well, we’ve been here before. Five out of the last six years we’ve been here before. I’ve learned to enjoy it while it lasts.
I couldn’t believe that was Manny Acta getting in Girardi’s face like that. Very un-Manny-like. Maybe trying to light up his charges a little. Yankee Stadium can be a tough place to visit for the youngsters.

Last night’s game just about killed me so this was a great one. I would loved to have been there and then go back to my loft apartment a few blocks away:>)
