Saturday: Tigers vs. Royals

If you were wondering who would be batting third for the Tigers against left-handed pitchers, Ryan Raburn appears to be your answer. He bats in front of Cabrera and plays in left field. Brennan Boesch gets the day at DH. Casper Wells starts in right.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Scott Sizemore, 2B
  3. Ryan Raburn, LF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Victor Martinez, C
  6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  7. Brennan Boesch, DH
  8. Casper Wells, RF
  9. Brandon Inge, 3B
P: Brad Penny
  1. Mike Aviles, 2B
  2. Melky Cabrera, CF
  3. Alex Gordon, LF
  4. Billy Butler, DH
  5. Jeff Francoeur, RF
  6. Eric Hosmer, 1B
  7. Wilson Betemit, 3B
  8. Brayan Pena, C
  9. Alcides Escobar, SS
P: Jeff Francis

I question why we brought up Dirks. Caspar Wells needs to play as well and bringing Dirks to sit the bench is silly. He is young and needs at bats. If you bring him up, play him. If you aren’t going to play him they should bring Santos back to give Avilia a day off or two.

Let’s hope Penny keeps the train going. We are on a roll. Go Tigs!

Sit Raburn a few days, he is slumping and could benefit from a few days off

I agree. Platoon Wells and Dirks, There the future of the team. Raburn is a fill in.

Pretty valid point about Dirks. But I expect he will actually get playing time when you consider how many times we face RHPs.
Right now you have Wells/Raburn vs Boesch/Dirks. Nice flexibility.
It will be interesting to see what Dirks can do—and whether they give him a chance to hit against LHP

Dirks minor league splits:
against LHP .282 RHP .348

I once said that Tiger fans are so fortunate to have a guy like Justin Verlander on their side. Blessed.
I am starting to begin to think that perhaps we could say the same about Austin Jackson.

Big inning for Penny.
KC has nipped the Tiger momentum quite well while hanging in there. One more shutout inning for Penny and the task becomes taller for the Royals. It won’t be easy.

If Yost brings in a RHP for the 8th—I counter with Dirks. He is a much better defensive outfielder.
I also bring in JVIII. While it would be neat to have Penny complete. A 3-run save is a lock for Papa Grande and a stimulant for his ego.
They left Francis in—what a game by him. I was actually hoping the tigers would look at him over the off season.

I hope we don’t have to suffer thru any “catcher indifference” this inning!!
I hate that.

You’re right about that indifference stuff, Dan. Not much of a big deal with a 3 run lead. I don’t remember Jose not being able to hold runners last year. Is this a new stretch position this year?

Phenomenal play streak we have going. Hard to believe we didn’t score after the first but I won’t complain, a win is a win and our pitching is so terrific right now. Fun stuff this winning thing.

Yep! But I also expected to score more runs than that as well. But it doesn’t really matter.

No complaints from me. Go Tigers!

Can we now say we have a good team? IMHO, if we bring up Dirks for Maggs, then play him. Raburn should sit with just ok fielding and a ton of stikeouts. Boesch is our # 3 hitter. Why does the SOC have to change the batting order so much. 41 degrees and raining as I type this. I still have my broom ready! Go Tigers! –Dave

Dirks will play, and plenty. I don’t think he was even at the ballpark Friday night, and he certainly wasn’t going to make his big league debut yesterday against that lefty. Don’t worry about him not playing. I always like how folks get all excited about the latest from Toledo. May have to wait, though, the way the weather looks.

Game cancelled incase you hadn’t heard yet. The weather here for those out of towners is down right miserable. Big giant rain drops that they say aren’t going to end anytime soon. Hope the guys enjoy a day off, they have been playing well and deserve it. Frankly KC probably wasn’t real excited about having to face Scherzer today.
Will be at the game Monday night. Going to be very cold, winter coat cold I think but dry. So I am assuming that I will get to see Scherzer tomorrow night instead of Porcello.

when a team is going this well, off days are unwelcome. really doubt that dirks is going to play much, but he could start to bump raburn into a more limited role if dirks hits and raburn’s slump continues. as with jackson, it seems leyland is waiting patiently for raburn to find a hot streak. doubt that dirks’ promotion changes anything unless he makes a big impact from the outset in what limited ABs he gets. thought they might promote a 3rd C instead of another OF.

I saw quite a bit of Dirks in spring training. He covers ground in the outfield, seems to be energetic, and has a very aggressive swing. Whether he’s ready for prime time remains to be seen. I’m perceiving that a lot of fans are excited about him and don’t want to pour water on that. We could certainly use a boost in the way of a 25-year old outfielder.
What with two rainouts in the Seattle-Cleveland series, it’s fortunate, at least for the Mariners, that they are scheduled in Cleveland again later this season. That could have become a scheduling nightmare if they hadn’t been.
Gk, I wanted to ask you if the atmosphere in the park on Saturday was as festive as it appeared to be on TV. It looked like a really good party. And that was a nice standing O for Peralta.
We need to give Jose Bautista the total Cabrera treatment. Don’t pitch to this man at all at this point in time. Just pretend he’s Barry Bonds and move on. Anything else would be foolish. It’s only two games. Walk him.

Agreed Rich about Bautista, if he gets anything to hit then I’ll be challenging the intelligence of our next 2 pitchers, this guy is hitting everything out right now.

We weren’t there on Saturday, we went on Friday night. But friday night was a lot of fun, finally warm. The thing is I think that the people who were really paying attention were wondering about another no-hitter. We are going tonight, not so much looking forward to that since the weather is crappy. It is very cold and very windy here today.
Thinking about driving to Pittsburg on Sudany of the game? Anyone else going to that. Probably most likely will be a last minute decision weather related and how tired we are from working all week.

that would be Sunday’s game??? Nice spelling.

Bautista is the best player in baseball right now. What is impressive about him to me is his determination and his confidence. When he makes an out (often a long fly ball) he is ticked off at himself—-visibly. He is a team leader. He plays with abandon.
Can you imagine how much we would love this guy if he were in a Tiger uni?
BTW, nice article by Lynn Henning today on the stupidity surrounding the ill-advised “firing” of Placido Polanco. Polanco was one of our best and dependable players. One that played the game right and gave you consistency as well as clutch hitting and spectacular defense when yo needed it most.
Can you imagine wihat it would be like to have him in a Tigers uni?

That was a good article by Lynn, yes. It goes along with what we all expected at the time, that it was a direct gut reaction to losing game 163. In fact, as soon as Gomez slid across the plate, the first thing that jumped into my mind was “who’s leaving?” I didn’t expect it to be Polanco. It’s “yesterday’s breakfast” now, but everytime I see Polly manning thirdbase for Philly, I can’t help but remember how I campaigned for him to take over at thirdbase during Inge’s injuries. Polly had played the position before. That one wasn’t Ilitch, that one was Leyland and his narrow mindedness.
