Thursday: Tigers vs. Yankees

Jim Leyland said last night that he was going to give Alex Avila the day off, since he has caught every inning of the last 12 games. He also figured the question of why not DH him would come up, the way he has been hitting. Here’s the problem, as Leyland explained it: If he has to pull Martinez to protect him from aggravating the groin injury again, the Tigers would lose the DH spot if Avila moved from there to catcher. And Leyland doesn’t want to use Don Kelly behind the plate unless it’s an emergency.

Thus, Magglio Ordonez gets the day at DH, with Ryan Raburn and Brennan Boesch in the corners. Don Kelly starts for Austin Jackson with a difficult right-hander on the mound in A.J. Burnett.

  1. Don Kelly, CF
  2. Scott Sizemore, 2B
  3. Brennan Boesch, RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Victor Martinez, C
  6. Magglio Ordonez, DH
  7. Ryan Raburn, LF
  8. Brandon Inge, 3B
  9. Ramon Santiago, SS
P: Rick Porcello
The bigger news about the lineups is on the Yankees side, where Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are both off.
  1. Brett Gardner, LF
  2. Nick Swisher, RF
  3. Robinson Cano, 2B
  4. Mark Teixeira, 1B
  5. Curtis Granderson, CF
  6. Jorge Posada, DH
  7. Eric Chavez, 3B
  8. Russell Martin, C
  9. Eduardo Nunez, SS
P: A.J. Burnett

While I agree Avila should get a day off now and then, I hope he doesn’t cool off too much. I also hope V-Mart doesn’t aggrevate his groin catching. Didn’t Leyland say he wouldn’t use him behind the plate for a while after he returned?

Anyone else in the area havingg problems with station FSD Detroit. A picture but no sound and my other channels work perfectly.

Whatever, they fixed it. Had sound, then no picture. They finally got it together.

Well, that was nice. Good to know even the mighty Yankees can play like crap.

Had a fun day at the park today! Stole that one, I was beginning to think we were going to be no- hit for a while. Thank you to Nunez for all his errors!

Got my prediction right that the Tigers would play better against NY, but missed by predicting the split. Good job, guys. That’s 3 of 4 from them in Comerica two years in a row and we win the season series, 4-3. The Yankees just don’t look the same away from their house and they’ve played a lot of games there so far.
I was surpised that JL let Porcello go 120 pitches deep into the game. I’m not surprised Rick could do it, but I thought we might still be in protection mode with him. Guess not.
Leyland, in all his smugness, really should go easy on fans who react negatively to a SEVEN game losing streak. And by the way, it’s those same fans who campaigned for moving Maggs down a few slots, and that seemed to work out very well.
That pitch thrown towards Raburn’s face as he squared to bunt is one of the scariest things in baseball I’ve seen in a long time. Man, that was close.

a bit surprised that Valverde came out for the 9th with a 4 run lead…was he the only one warming in the bottom of 8th when Boesch tacked on insurance HR? might have been a good spot for Benoit to enter with a cushioned lead.

any win over the Yanks is a good one. Hope this momentum (no such thing I know Mr. Leyland) carries forward to the Blue Jays so I can gloat to my husband all weekend.

Watched the end of the replay last night and got to hear the SOS talk (I mean mumble). We need Maggs and Victor to help score runs so let’s get a BIG winning streak.
