Monday: Jackson gets day off

Jim Leyland had talked about getting Jackson out of the lineup for a day Sunday, but held off in favor of the matchup. With hard-throwing Rangers right-hander Alexi Ogando on the mound, though, Jackson is off.

“I’m going to get him away for a day,” Leyland said. “He’ll work with Mac a little bit.”

As I write this, Jackson is taking batting practice with the team. After he finished his round, McClendon talked with him about his lower-body footwork  in the box.

Hey Pup, who’s head would go first? –Dave

FIre Jim Leyland he is too old to manage the Tigers. Taking a lead off hitter out in after 7 games of the new season makes no sense at all to me. Why does a young player like Jackson need a day off?

Managers will often give players a day off if they’re in a slump. Likewise, if a player’s on a hot streak, he’s usually in the lineup. Part superstition? Maybe. Part psychology? Yes. Saw it in last night’s game Yanks and Bosox. Ellsbury is slumping, so he gets the night off with a tough lefty (Sabathia) on the mound. When things aren’t going well, managers try something different…maybe move the hitter into a different spot in the lineup or give them a day off. Something to breakup the usual routine. Now if a player is going well…don’t mess with his routine.

Let’s go Tigers!! I think the Reason Leyand is letting Jackson off for todays game. Is because everyone need at least 1 day or more off to relaxed and to DeStress his Body down. If u think about how many games and practices the team plays the game. Just put urself in their shoes do u think u can stay up@ high par with full power hitter for every game and practise?? No no one can! Don’t hate anyone on the Tigers team for taking a day off. They are aloud to have a down day. & do u know how many days of the Game season that the players get to see their familys?? Or to go see their parents if they are in a deifferent town then the D! Let onle the players thart comes to us from a different Contery. How offernt do they get to see their family? Think about that?! Thanks, Kat

Giving the day off to AJ is not a horrible idea. That being said this is one silly looking lineup. The only way it could have been sillier if they simply put the new Clete Thomas (Kelly) in to lead off simply because he is replacing the leadoff hitter.
JL gets to put a power guy in the 2 hole today (Geez I really want to be just like Tony Larussa! when I grow up!
The way Avila has been hitting it would not have been out of line to have him batting 6th and Kelly 8th).
A nice little reward (bone) for Alex and I’m sure Kelly is thrilled to simply be in the lineup at all.
Grit your teeth Ryan Raburn. You’ll get your chance,

JL is getting innovative in his old age. He has developed a new line that will soon be overworked—it’s already a little tired:
“He’ll be absolutely fine.”

Casper Wells
What’s up with WELLS? Jackson is off and you don’t put WELLS IN?? Something is clearly wrong when Leyland commented that WELLS is the best outfielder after Jackson!
And he’s only been in the starting lineup once! Get him out there to showcase his wares.
Someone explain. Poor choices by nmanagement.

if this game goes sour, I can see Leyland looking for a way to get tossed…like arguing balls and strikes. wouldn’t hurt to shake things up a bit, might as well ride the umps if his players aren’t doing well. just another way to breakup the monotony of a slow start to the season.

Can you even begin to imagine the consternation of Tiger fans if JV were to run through a period of difficulty on the mound? So far we have been able to count on him and Scherzer (Max has had a great deal of luck mind you)

Oh my goodness,
When a team is going bad it sometimes just has to get worse.
MCab had absolutely no business running on that bloop–especially with a runner on 3rd.
Ouch!

I had to check in when I couldn’t figure out how Miggy got out – thanks for the insight Dan! Wish I could watch, I love watching Verlander when he is in a zone like he is. Too bad the other guys is too – just our luck. I too thought it odd that Kelly is after Martinez today, thought maybe Peralta would be there. What do I know anyways. Come on guys, give Verlander some run support will ya?

JV is so impressive. He has got his good stuff going but he is smart enough to pitch to contact today and not go after the big K (this is when he is prone to mistakes).
Excellent job of “pitching”.
Now if the lineup can scratch a few runs so that 1 Texas Ranger bomb doesn’t determine the outcome.

Not the best looking at bats today. Swing early & swing often – is that McClendon’s new mantra?

OK 2-0 We’re done now.
no way this lineup gets 3 or 4 the way they are hitting against this guy and Feliz soon to follow.
Anyone c heck to see how bad the 7th inning has been for JV over his career?
Shame

BTW—-Casper Wells probbly catches bot of those balls that went over Ordonez’s head. I have never liked the guy out there in the field. Good enough arm but no legs whatsoever. He is DH material. Period. And so far this year I see his value more as trade bait really. A 7th innin relief pitcher might be good!
Frees up the OF for the young guys.

What could we realistically get for him? All he does at the plate is foul off pitches and pop up to infielders. I like the guy, don’t get me wrong, but I think he’s well past his prime and his trade value is minimal.

According to baseball-reference.com, JV’s 7th inning career ERA is actually 2.21, second best to 9th inning ERA of 0.90. His worst inning splits are 8th, 5th, and 1st at 7.94, 5.13, and 4.53 respectively. It’s interesting how his 7th and 9th innings have been so good, but the 8th so bad.

TIGERS ARE BAD EXTRY BAD CAN”T WIN WITH WHAT THEY HAVE .TALKING ABOUT JACKSON STRIKING OUT ALL THE TIME LOOK A MAGS IN RIGHT FIELD TEAMS JUST HIT THE BALL OVER HIS HEAD.I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT DETROIT CAN DO .NETHER DO THEY .WE HAVE ALOT OF NOTHING.WOULD BE NICE HAVING A GOOD 2ND BASEMENT?

I can’t really understand most of this gibberish, but who would you rather have at 2nd? Carlos Guillen? HAHA! What a joke.

2B will work itself out soon. I expect Sizemore will come back and this time with a vengeance.
Michael Young wouldn’t look that bad there would he?
Ticked off at these guys for sleeping at the wheel when JV pitches. Happens way too often.

Another interesting stat I found. Over his career, Miggy bats .372 in wins, and .253 in losses. Really shows how much he carries the team.

Too many problem areas for the ship to be magically righted soon.
This looks like it could be shaping up to be a year that will be defined by a surprise acquistion, injury or release. The 3 Venezueleans are creating a bit of logjam in the lineup with their lack of flexibility. Martinez can’t catch that much, can’t play 1st becasue of Cab. Ordonez can’t DH because of Martinez so they have to play him in the field. Yikes!
Meanwhile the positions where the club knows they need a longer term fix (3rd and LF) continue to be unaddressed. Marinez is good guy and good hitter but he does not slove any positional problems. Another DH type was not what this club needed. It needed a good 2 way player to solve some problems. Crawford (preferably) or Werth were on my list. ( I’ve given up on St. Brandon ever being replaced by anyone.)
If Inge hits .240 this year I will be surprised. If Ordonez and Inge combined hit 25 HRs, I will be surprised. I’m sorry fols, but offensive production like that from “everyday” players can’t be countered by the rest of the lineup.
A side by side comparison with the Rangers really points out the weaknesses in our offense. And they aren’t the only team. We don’t stack up very well against the Twins either.

Sorry for the previous post—–some “bad” typos in there “Folks”

I don’t know if Wells or any other RFer in our organization gets to those at the wall, but that’s beside the point. It looks to me like Ordonez may need to go on the DL. He’s gimpy and slow in the outfield and he’s hitting poorly, thus hurting the team. We’ve got plenty of guys who can take his place and it will stop Leyland from playing an injured veteran and batting him third. In addition, both Boesch and Raburn can start and that problem is solved. I’d rather wait and get back a healthy Magglio than to keep pushing him out there. While I’m at it, is Inge healthy? He looks under the weather out there.
Verlander is not only a great pitcher, but he’s a good ballplayer too. He fields his position, is one of the best in the business at covering first, and is always prepared. Really impressive.
I thought a big hit there by Martinez may have jump started this club, but no. I’m left to contemplate how long before they’re forced to change the culture. Middle of May?

Nothing against Avila, but it’s possible that Victor’s on field leadership may give us a boost. He can catch plenty, and wants to. I suspect he’s disappointed at how few starts he’s gotten behind the dish so far.

Yeah Dan, who you callin’ a “fol”? :-)

Who got the hits today? Miggy 2. Raburn 1(ph). Jackson 1(ph). If I was the manager I would change the lineup everyday :) Seriously, if Jackson is sitting, replace him with Wells and leave the rest of the batting alone! Go Tigers. –Dave

Well, just got back from the game. WOW was that an exciting game????? Pitch, they cant hit. Hit they cant pitch or field their positions. Really as I said yesterday, which the exception of a few guys most are not doing what they are capable of or even a fraction of what they are capable of. I don’t know, I would have to see a replay, but at the park it sure seemed to me like those hits to Maggs are something that should be gotten to. I guess his ankle is still bothering him. Very disappointing start to the season and it doesn’t get any easier anytime soon. Hopefully they don’t dig themselves to much of a hole.

Oh, the disgust I am feeling. Victor Martinez should have started the first game in NY as catcher. He should be the starting catcher with Alex being the backup and/or for particular pitchers. Never in one million years would BB still be on my roster. He’d be in Toledo.
.
Our team looks dead. It’s disheartening. Maggs probably needs to go on the DL for 15. They need a new manager and I have no doubts about that.
.
It takes me months of planning to make it to even a single game during the summer. Some of us still live from check to check and with the gas prices, it will require more planning. Already the booing is starting.

Oh, and I have only one request for Mr. Dombrowski. Please, please before you dismantle this team as they crash and burn, get rid of the manager first.

I like the SOC. I like him a lot.
.
Just don’t like him as Manager.
.
Maybe I don’t like him a lot.

I think JL needs to go. It is not OK to take what some pundits call a good ball tgeam, a couple of years ag, a great ball team, and continually under perform.
The bottom line is winning. We do not do that consistently. JL is the manager of teams that at times look bewildered, defeated, and hapless. How many of these uninspired teams does it take to effect a change?
Change alone would stimulate this situation. The status quo tact is not working. And while I’m at it—can you imagine how different a ball club this would be if MCab could play 3B?
I’m not saying he should anymore—those days are done. He’s been exalted (and grown) too much and now feels he needs be compared with Pujols. But, for crying out loud, they brought him here 4 years ago because somebody in their right mind knew the gig was up for Brandon Inge. Inge is re-esconced at 3rd and we now have a position with little offensive production, no place to shuffle in Martinez for more ABs. No place for the power LHB we have always needed, and no place for a guy like Strieby who is permanently blocked–no matter how well he hits.
I kno, I know, I know—-I’m just sahying that the complexion of the Detroit Tigers would have been radically different had Miguel been able to man the fort at 3rd.
Boy, I don’t know about all of you folks, but I am really looking forward to seeing our #2 guy against the Rangers tomorrow.

(not!)

I’d love to see Dombrowski go. Just a gut feeling, but I think he has his hands in the day to day more than he should, which then handcuffs Leyland. And look at how many bad deals he’s made by giving guys long, high $$ contracts that don’t work out (Dontrelle, Guillen, etc.).
And I wouldn’t call Penny our #2 guy – he just pitched the second game of the season. I’d list him as the 5th guy in this rotation.
