Home opener: Tigers vs. Royals

Even as Detroit home openers go, this weather is pretty bad. It’s a steady, heavy rain coming down as of 11 a.m. on a cold, damp morning. A look at the radar, though, suggests it should clear out early this afternoon. Doesn’t mean it’ll be a beautiful day, but it’ll be playable, and it won’t be winter.

This weekend? Nice.

You might remember Jim Leyland was weighing Boesch or Raburn in the starting lineup today. Boesch is 3-for-9 against Royals starter Kyle Davies, while Raburn is 7-for-14. In the end, it appears Boesch’s hitting this week won out. He’s in left field, with Raburn on the bench.

The rest of the starting lineup:

TIGERS

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Will Rhymes, 2B
  3. Magglio Ordonez, RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Victor Martinez, DH
  6. Brennan Boesch, LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Brandon Inge, 3B

P: Max Scherzer

You know what? Don’t play Raburn at all. He’s of no use in sporadic appearances, and that’s all he’s going to get. I have to bow to JL’s man crush on Boesch. When Brennan fizzles, start using Raburn again.

I must admit that I am really shocked that Brennan is getting the start. I do feel for him, Raburn that is, doesn’t seem quite fair that you are told you have the spot and yet you rarely play. I suppose you have to play Boesch while he is hot but come on.

I know Boesch isn’t the best defensive outfielder the Tigers have, but Raburn is horrible. He’s an infielder, at best. One look at his AB’s last night will tell you why he’s not playing today. He looked lost, which isn’t unusual. I’d love to see JL sit both Boesch and Raburn and give Casper Wells a shot and see what he can do with regular playing time. It won’t happen since he has some sort of longstanding man-crush on Raburn and seems to be developing one on Boesch.

It really is ridiculous. You are bang on Rich. RR is not effective as a part time player. For two straight years, he has had strong 2nd halfs when his playing time increased. Finally, this winter, he is told he is the starting leftfielder. He had a strong spring. Unfortunately, now he probably has doubt again and he will start pressing again. I dont think it is a coincidence that after not starting for 2 straight games, he came back last night with an 0 for 4 with 3 Ks. A week into the year, and it appears he is not going to get the playing time he was promised. BB is hot right now so I know it is a tough spot but he is supposed to be the starting leftfielder and he has started in less than half the games. It really is disgusting the way JL jerks certain guys around with his GOD-like attitude.

Let’s hope Mad Max Effort can get it done today.

Go Tigers.

Here’s all you need to know: Boesch is 6 for 8 in the 3-hole and 2 for 11 in the 6-hole. Anybody in the 3-hole will get fat pitches with Cabrera on deck. Raburn, hitting 6th, is 4 for 10 with nobody hitting behind him. As if the 7 for 14 off Davies wasn’t enough, plus he was supposed to be the opening day leftfielder. I swear Leyland stays up nights thinking of ways to tick me off.

Raburn could play 2B today or you could sit Avila. But I am tiring at wondering why he isn’t in the lineup.
What I really don’t understand is why Leyland thinks the home opener is so important (I know it is important to the city, fans, etc.). But to re-arrange your pitching staff so Scherzer starts the home opener, dominoing into Brad Penny getting 2 starts in the first 6 games makes no sense.

I don’t think Raburn got any reps in the infield this spring, so that’s not likely. I think he can play secondbase just fine and I get weary of comments that say he’s horrendous or whatever word they use. I’ve seen every inning that Raburn has played at second since he got here and he’s been far from horrendous. He’s been pretty good there, in fact. But…….not actually seeing the games doesn’t stop people from posting their opinions.
I’m kind of killing time here. For some reason, the pregame show is blacked out here. I usually get that.
After six games, I’ve heard Mario and Rod in only two. There won’t be another prime time evening game for two weeks. This feels more like spring training than the regular season.

Tigers raise white flag? With Sparky’s name on it? Insert your own joke here.

I think Boesch has the chance to be a bigger impact player than Raburn, BUT, the truth is Raburn is getting jacked around by Leyland. Leyland will turn him into a liability before too long. Raburn deserves LF until he has shown he isn’t capable. Boesch, Martinez, Ordonez can rotate into that DH spot. Avila can use a little rest as a catcher, he will only be motivated by seeing VMart play the odd game there. Ordonez’s years have caught up with him and he can afford to be rested, either totally or as a DH. There is some room to get Boesch ABs like this. You can also put Boesch in for the occasional, I say occassional, start in LF IF Raburn has a tough RHP that he has shown he doesn’t hit. That wasn NOT the case today.
If they keep this crap up they should just send Raburn down to Toledo and tell him to learn how to play 3rd. Brandon will not last this year.

And a good time was had by all. My favorite parts were the guy from Creed singing God Bless “O’Merica” and Brennan Boesch’s stunning new hair color.

woohoo guys, nice start to the home season

Just got back from the game a few minutes ago! Fun had by all, and the clouds parted kinda. Nice game, but admittedly after the first inning it kinda was a boring game. Any home watchers want to tell me if Miguel tagged that batter out on that throw from Inge? Couldn’t tell for sure from where I was sitting?

Replays were inconclusive, GK. The umpire was in a good position so I have to assume Miggy just missed him. By thaaat much.
Ordonez really should have caught that drive to the wall out there. Seems like there’s at least one glaring miscue per game. Guess we’ll have to get used to it. Wouldn’t want to tell that to the pitchers, though.
