Perry to DL, Weinhardt recalled from Toledo

The Tigers’ first DL move of the regular season wasn’t anything expected. Detroit placed Ryan Perry on the 15-day DL on Thursday, retroactive to Tuesday, with an infected eye. Robbie Weinhardt, one of the last cuts of Spring Training, has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take his place.

Weinhardt was already in Toledo for the Mud Hens season opener. He’ll be in Baltimore for tonight’s series finale against the Orioles.

What that means for the Tigers’ seventh-inning relief options might take a little longer to sort out. Manager Jim Leyland had Phil Coke available for the first four games, but he’s now back in starter mode ahead of his turn in the rotation Saturday against the Royals.

Weinhardt could be an option, as could left-handers Daniel Schlereth and Brad Thomas. As Leyland said a couple days ago, somebody needs to step up. The only difference now is that Perry isn’t an option for a couple weeks.

An eye infection of all things. Well, we’ll need Weinhardt and Thomas to match what they did in ST. This may be an opportunity for Villarreal. At this point, I’d like to keep Schlereth on the LH hitters. Of the starters, who can complete seven innings other than Verlander? It becomes even more imperative that these guys go deep into games, rather than being taken deep.

I do not dislike Peralta. Quite the contrary. He has a truly remarkably accurate arm. And a nice glove. His range is suspect that much is sure. He can go yard. he can drive in runners.
BUT
Ramon can flat out play shortstop. And I hope he is able to cause some trouble on the bases today too. I am pulling for “leadfoot” to have a super game, beat out a drag bunt, swipe a base and go from 1st to 3rd on a routine base hit.
Stick that in your Marlboro and smoke it Leyland.

eventually, Peralta will end up at 2b imo. they’ll look to upgrade at SS defensively, and Peralta’s bat will play well at 2b and his lack of range will be less of a factor there. could happen next season. alot depends on development of Worth, Iorg, and availability of SS in trade and FA markets. funny how his spring training struggles with the bat are a distant memory now…1+ weeks into the season.
