Wednesday: Tigers vs. Phillies

The Tigers have a two-day trip to Jupiter coming up, so some guys who will be hitting the bus tomorrow might be getting some rest today.

  1. Andy Dirks, LF
  2. Will Rhymes, 2B
  3. Magglio Ordonez, DH
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Victor Martinez, C
  6. Brennan Boesch, RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  8. Don Kelly, CF
  9. Danny Worth, 3B
P: Rick Porcello
  1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
  2. Shane Victorino, CF
  3. Placido Polanco, 3B
  4. Ryan Howard, 1B
  5. Raul Ibanez, LF
  6. Delwyn Young, RF
  7. Ross Gload, DH
  8. Brian Schneider, C
  9. Wilson Valdez, 2B
P: Joe Blanton

Andy Dirks isn’t in the lineup so we again can expect no hitting!

Apparently I can’t read he is in the lineup.

If Dirks hits 400 for the month of March do we lead him off and slot Jackson in the nine spot?

With a short stroke he’s not an easy out which gives the 3-4-5 guys a chance to plate him. Maybe Raburn will be a utility man again yet…

Guys, it’s spring training. No guarantees Dirks will do this well from now on or during regular play. Calm down.

Good grief, what a bad start.

Rich is at this game. Hope he gives us all the low-down.

Not a great outingbfor Rick, can’t wait for the lowdown Rich!

Wow is anybody listening to these phillies broadcasters? Some of the criticism and critique they are laying on the tigers, their players and what they think they should or shouldn’t be doing, is well on my nerves a little. Porcello isn’t big enough, the crowd is too quiet they need to pump in crowd noise from their stadium, Boesch is only on this team because of his bat, blah blah, blah. It’s like family you can’t point out all their faults, but you don’t want to hear it from somebody else! And of course the phillies are perfect. I guess there broadcasters are just as big of jerks as the philidelphia fans are known to be?

Rich from memory mentioned the weather yesterday so today’s post will have to be twice as long!!🙂
Have been thinking about the Guillen DH, Martinez C and Rhymes 2B and is a great way to maximise returns on Carlos’s $13m.
There is only one thing worse than the company owners son being promoted to quickly in the firm and that is when it is a son of management.
Being in a similar situation, it appears Avila recognises he must work doubly hard to gain respect and he may well continue to surprise on the upside.
With Raburn, Ramon and now Kelly a lock for opening day roster, I don’t think any of the remaining fringe players are out of options with Clete closest with one remaining.
I know a big if but if Carlos somehow is ready for opening day, being able to chose only 2 from Worth, Rhymes, Sizemore, Boesch, Wells and Thomas is downright impossible and would likely come from the final three listed.

I like Avila a lot but I’m thinking Martinez is our best bet for most of the catching time THIS YEAR. Victor is getting older and there’s time for Alex yet. I’m talking 2011 only. By the way, Victor made a heckuva play today on a slow roller down the first place line. It was one of the few times the crowd made some noise.
I don’t see Andy Dirks going north with the club. There is an Andy Dirks every spring for most clubs. If he acquits himself well, he’ll go into the rotation of outfielders who can be called up due to injuries on the big club.
The Phillies announcers are correct in that it is somewhat quiet at JM this week. Lack of offense will do that. More than that, however, is the fact that the crowd at JM is generally much older than the fans who show up in Clearwater for Phillies games. I was saying that to my wife as we walked the concourse during yesterday’s game. I would like the Phillies crew to know that everyone has a wonderful time at Joker Marchant and that we don’t need a tavern beyond the leftfield fence like they have in Clearwater.
GK, I’ve actually found the Philadelphia fans to be a pretty cool bunch, both down here and up in Philly. Sometimes those reps are just that, reps.
Today’s game: I thought Porcello got squeezed a little bit and I was sitting directly behind homeplate, squared up. I think Boesch should have run down the fly near the fence that went for a double, and there was a grounder that Cabrera didn’t get to that went for a single. Those plays not made ended up in a four-run inning for Philly. When a guy like Porcello is pitching, defense is paramount. Defense is paramount in every sport and I have no patience for a lack of it.
I’ve been seeing similarities between this ST and ST of 2008. I hope those similarities soon disappear.

In total agreement Rich – can’t see Carlos lasting the season at 2B and therefore a waste of a big chunk of payroll and a proven clutch hitter.
