Tigers hire former Dodgers scouting director

The Tigers made a nice boost to their amateur scouting ranks Wednesday by completing their previously reportedly talks with Dodgers scouting director Tim Hallgren. He’s coming on board as Detroit’s national crosschecker, filling a post that opened with the promotions of Scott Pleis to scouting director and David Chadd to VP/special assistant.

Hallgren has more than a quarter century in baseball with the Dodgers and Texas Rangers. He was Logan White’s right-hand man with the Dodgers drafts, both as scouting director since 2007 and in his previous posts. He’ll now be working with Pleis, Chadd and James Orr in the Tigers draft room.
Tony Jackson of ESPNLosAngeles.com first reported the move last week, though at that time nothing was official.

Jason, do you happen to know if Nick Castellanos is palying any kind of winter ball?
I have not found any indication that he is.

He played in the instructional league earlier this month and supposedly looked good according to some folks who saw him. But other than that, he isn’t playing any organized ball until next spring, which is often the case with players drafted out of high school who aren’t signed until August.

Thanks. By all accounts he is a very promising young player.

Hey jason would it be legal under the CBA to sign Bob Seay to a 3 year contract with a minor league deal this year and an invite to Spring Training in 2012 on a cheap MLB contract

So far as I know, you can’t do multi-year deals under minor-league contracts to free agents. You can sign him to a minor-league contract this year if you want, but you’d still have to sign him to a separate deal for 2012.
