Tuesday: Tigers vs. Royals

Brandon Inge is 0-for-19 off Bruce Chen, which might explain why he’s batting eighth tonight. By contrast, Miguel Cabrera is 7-for-12 off Chen with two home runs, and Johnny Damon is 13-for-25 off him with a pair of homers.

  1. Jackson, CF
  2. Damon, DH
  3. Raburn, LF
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Wells, RF
  6. Peralta, SS
  7. Sizemore, 2B
  8. Inge, 3B
  9. Laird, C
P: Armando Galarraga
  1. Jarrod Dyson, CF
  2. Mike Aviles, 2B
  3. Billy Butler, 1B
  4. Wilson Betemit, 3B
  5. Kila Ka’aihue, DH
  6. Yuniesky Betancourt, SS
  7. Alex Gordon, LF
  8. Jai Miller, RF
  9. Lucas May, C
P: Bruce Chen

My prediction for the rest of the season is that Scott Sizemore will pull his average up to about .260 and will add another couple of bombs and about 10 RBI and set himself up to again be the starting 2B next spring.
I also bet Armando gives up a HR to Kila.
Finally, I think Cabby gets a bomb tonight.

This inning points out 2 glaring weakness.
1st–Avila makes the plays that Laird doesn’t.
2md GMan is a perpetual project. The nibbling as opposed to those times when he pounds the strike zone doesn’t even make sense. There’s no in between?
Also, why on earth did he try to throw that squibber to 1st when the easy play was home?

Well, I go to the laundry room for 20 minutes with a 3 run lead and now it’s 4-3.

Is it just me,or does it look like Laird could care less what the nibbler is throwing? He crossed him up at least twice in the inning and it feels like the could care less if he gets rocked. I guess he’s looking for more run support.

I’ve wondered if Galarraga is nibbling or is it that he can’t command his stuff? At any rate, he appeared to be crossing up his catcher and you have to wonder what’s going on with that situation after the events in Chicago a few weeks ago. After talking about not getting enough decisions, his club gave him a three run lead after four innings and he gave it all back. So he ended up with a decision, although not the kind he wanted. Probably should keep your mouth shut next time, Mondo. There’s nothing to be gained from talking to the media about those things. I expect G-Man won’t be here next season.
The Royals have 31 hits in two games and I swear 20 of them are dinks and dribblers. That’s just plain luck, combined with getting the bat on the ball and not striking out. I don’t think they plan their attack to dink and dribble a team into the ground.
That was some bad fielding by Galarraga and Figaro. Minor league stuff. Or lower. Obviously, they weren’t working with an inner calm.
We’ll need to address about 3 to 4 bullpen spots over the winter. I’m good with Schlereth, Perry, and Coke, if Phil is in the pen, along with Weinhardt. Zumaya can’t be counted on. Valverde should be okay and is under contract. Bonine should be a starter somewhere.
Other than that, I’d forget looking for a backup catcher because we already have one named Gerald Laird, and I’d concentrate on adding that big bat or two.
I’m just touching on the offseason stuff here.

Rich – I do not think Laird will be back. They will need to open up the wallets for a catcher, even if it is to push avilia.

Bonine, for as much as I liked him last year, is a disaster right now. He is a starter, I agree. But he should be a starter in Toledo. We need to upgrade Thomas’ spot in the bullpen as well.

G-Man, well he drives me crazy. I would not be surprised if he is traded. But with his low salary, he might be back looking for the #5 spot. What about Bonderman? I think the Tigs might offer him something.

I don’t think Laird will be back either, but just saying he could be a backup catcher. Wherever he goes, that’s what he’ll be anyway. I put a new catcher way down the list of needs. I’m not sure how much trade value Bonine has, but be it Toledo or some other club, he should be starting. That’s usually the case with guys who have multiple pitches.
I have no problem with Bonderman being here next season. The issue is salary. He, his agent, and the club would have to strike a deal and there’s only so much pay cut that can legally be made, if it came to that. Maybe a one year deal, or a multiple year at a lower salary.
It’s a tricky business this offseason.

I like Alex and he should play every day. He has proved he can defend and he has pop in his bat. Bondo has no fire (emotion) Galaraga needs to throw strikes and trust the catcher. Maybe Kenny can come to ST and teach these pitchers how to field! 2-0 Thomas, see ya! Damon, bases full in the 9th and you swing at the first pitch, see ya! –Dave

For the life of me I can’t comprehend how a guy can look so bad at the plate (Damon) at times and yet produce damn near Hall-of-Fame consideration.
He is absolutely brutal on some of his swings andf misses.
I noticed a quote about PFP being done in ST..Well what is woring with doing it during the regular season? This is part of their job, take some time and make sure these guys know what to do with the baseball when they have to make a play.

KR was supposed to help out with PFP but “family issues” prevented him from going. Some of those pitchers seem to just stand there when a ball is hit near them or just let it go right past without trying to glove it. Surely, some of it has to do with athleticism, some being gifted a little bit more than others. We sure do get spoiled by having seen a guy like K. Rogers and Verlander fielding plays.
That sure was a pretty DP by Will, Jh, and Cabby.

I’m not liking this. No base hits yet. Come on, Tigers.

Gotta disagree with the Bondo has no fire comment. I get frustrated with his stubborn nature, especially pre-injury. But the guy is a gamer. The only one that seems to stick up for our hitters (last year in MINN, this year with Brett Gardner’s slide). He seems to have learned how to pitch. His salary will indeed go down, and there will probably be incentives. But I hope he returns!
