Tigers recall Schlereth, option Frazier

The Tigers’ injury-shortened, workload-extended bullpen will be getting some help for the team’s four-game series at Yankee Stadium. Detroit recalled left-hander Daniel Schlereth from Triple-A Toledo and optioned outfielder Jeff Frazier back to the Mud Hens.

Schlereth is expected to rejoin the Tigers Monday in New York, the team may or may not have closer Jose Valverde available depending on his mild abdominal strain. They also will have to watch Phil Coke after he closed out the Tigers’ last two wins against the White Sox.

Schlereth, part of the return package from Arizona in last December’s Edwin Jackson trade,  pitched in four games for the Tigers during his two-week stint in Detroit last month. The 24-year-old and former first-round draft pick gave up an earned run and two inherited runners on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings with two walks and a strikeout.

The Tigers called up Frazier when they were in need of offensive punch at the end of July, but had used him sparingly at best in recent days. He went 5-for-22 with a double, an RBI and five strikeouts in eight appearances.

Nice win today, Tigers. Let’s not have this be just a one game hitting surge. Most games you could win with half as many runs if the pitching holds up. After giving the Sox a gift run with the Galarraga balk and Cabrera error, you came back really well. You could have had one more run in the 4th inning after Avila’s double if JL would have told Santiago to bunt Avila to 3rd. AJ followed with what would have been a sac fly. Jl had his *** saved when you exploded later with more runs. It’s a good thing that lost run wasn’t the one that lost the game. When these JL non-moves are this plain to me, why can’t DD and Illitch see them?

I don’t think it is acceptable to glorify the dugout altercation but it may actually have fired up these guys a bit.
GMan strikes me as a moody kind of surly individual (at least on the mound). I actually thought his reponse to Joyce’s blown call was out of character—I expected him to be argumentative. I supspect he was genuinely shocked and stunned at the call and his reaction to it was muted.
We can’t know all that factored in to tiff but on first blush I would say GMan was out of line to dress the kid Avila down like that. Good for Laird for sticking his nose in it. Joyce apologized publicly. I hope GMan learned from that. He should too—at least with his teamates.
Glad to see the Schlereth move. We need some freshness in the pen. A surprise we can throw at the opposition rather than the very hittable and preictable stuff we have been seeing. Funny how this was a strength for us early in the season and now it borders on a disaster area.
