Zumaya update: Elbow injury, MRI Tuesday

Word from the Tigers is that it’s an elbow injury for Joel Zumaya. They’re going to wait for Zumaya’s MRI exam Tuesday to talk about the severity. But obviously, as Jim Leyland said, “It doesn’t look good.”

I saw Zumaya come out of the training room and go to his locker in the visiting clubhouse at Target Field. His right arm was in a sling. He said he’d talk with reporters tomorrow.
Zumaya has a long injury history, as everybody knows, but until now his elbow has been sound. Catcher Gerald Laird said he heard “a little pop” when Zumaya threw the pitch. That can mean a few different things, so I wouldn’t want to speculate on ligament or dislocation.
No word on any possible roster move yet. Leyland and Dave Dombrowski were expected to meet tonight to go over possible options. They do have a spot open on the 40-man roster, and they do have the option of recalling Jay Sborz from Toledo. Normally the rules say you have to wait 10 days, but an injury replacement for a DL move is an exception. Leyland indicated it will not be Ryan Perry, who’s scheduled to throw his second rehab outing for the Mud Hens tomorrow.

It looked like his arm from the elbow down was just flailing in the wind. Horrible looking. I thought maybe he even broke it. Well, it doesn’t look good no matter what it is. I love Zumaya and the excitement he brings. Who is possibly going to fill that role?

I would have figured Perry. Sborz to me would be a bad bet. Sclereth has been pretty good but he is prone to bases on balls. Casey Fien might be the guy. He has always been a strike thrower.

painful pop inner elbow is ucl (tommy john ligament) tear until proven otherwise. i sure hope it’s not…maybe something lesser like an elbow bone spur coming loose or a sprained ucl. recent article mentioned that zumaya had switched from curve to slider…hopefully those mechanical tweaks didn’t contribute to the injury.

Rich, I think you are right about Zumaya possibly pitching injured. Or at least affected by some kind of physical deterioration. He was striking out far less batters than previously. In April and May he struck out over 30 and in the whole mont of June up till today, just 3. Very dependent on the fastball. Might have been aggravating to throw a breaking ball?

I can’t imagine what is going through his head at this point. All we can do is wish him well.

Painful elbow pop + lack of pain later (Tigers win, but outlook for Joel Zumaya uncertain) could be a ruptured tendon. :/

Tried to link to this Detroit Free Press article but that failed: freep.com/article/20100629/SPORTS02/100629001/1050/Leyland-says-Zumayas-injury-doesnt-look-good

Ugh for Joel and for the Tigers and us fans. We don’t need to lose him, he has been good for us, I can only imagine his frustration right now. Joel and Valverde have been a great hold/closing team for us.

I didn’t get to see it myself, but someone said that the guys on MLB Network were saying that it is Zumaya’s delivery that is causing these injuries. I don’t know who said what. If that’s the case, and I’ve suspected it all along, he’ll just continue to hurt himself. I wish I could have seen that show last night.

Why not Coke in the eight regularly. And closer today?
Something must be wrong in the system again. In 2006 all starters buut for JV including the call ups when into Dl. All the relievers but Jones landed there too.
In 2007 again i most pitchers injured. Now injuries in three level of the system. And young rushed badly and veterans alike

Hate to see Zoom go down. And Coke’s post-game comments beating himself up for making Zoom come into the game were heart-breaking. Hope the news is better than we expect. Looking ahead, I read that the Tribe is shopping Kerry Wood. Anybody think DD will have any interest in picking him up for late-inning help?

Jason.
Been following you daily, for years now, and I must say, here in 2010, you’re slipping my man. Day after day sometime, of nothing from you, then today, an hour after news was announced by other sources, you STIL have NOTHING on Joel.

Tsk Tsk.
