Wednesday: Tigers vs. Yankees, Game 1

While Wednesday morning’s move to recall Alfredo Figaro gives the Tigers an extra reliever for Wednesday, it leaves the Tigers short a position player. They have three players on the bench, and one of them is the second catcher, so manager Jim Leyland has a little less flexibility to rest guys for the day-night doubleheader.

“You want to take care of everybody, but in this situation you can’t,” Leyland said.
With that in mind, here’s how Leyland was talking about working it out:
  • Scott Sizemore will not start the day game, but he will start the night game. Leyland said the cold weather sometimes affects Sizemore’s surgically repaired left ankle. With Raburn sent down, Ramon Santiago is left to start at second today.
  • Magglio Ordonez and Johnny Damon will each play both games, but they’ll alternate in the DH slot. Magglio will DH the first game and start in RF tonight. Damon will start the day game in left field and DH tonight.
  • Gerald Laird will catch Rick Porcello in the day game. Alex Avila will catch Jeremy Bonderman in the nightcap.
Got all that? Ok, here’s the full lineup for the day game …
  1. Jackson, CF
  2. Damon, LF
  3. Ordonez, DH
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Boesch, RF
  6. Inge, 3B
  7. Santiago, 2B
  8. Laird, C
  9. Everett, SS
P: Rick Porcello
  1. Derek Jeter, SS
  2. Brett Gardner, CF
  3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
  4. Alex Rodriguez, DH
  5. Robinson Cano, 2B
  6. Jorge Posada, C
  7. Nick Swisher, RF
  8. Randy Winn, LF
  9. Ramiro Pena, 3B
P: Javier Vazquez

Pretty pathetic looking plate appearences so far this afternoon against Vasquez. He has been knocked around by everyone so far. Horrible.
Porcello okay so far.

Darn it GK. I was just logging in to type nothing like the Tiger’s hitters to get back on the right track for Vazquez!

Don’t walk Yankees Ricky!!
I hope everyone is going to be happy with Inge’s D because if he keeps the long swing going he will end up hitting what he has for the last THREE seasons: .225
Nothing to write home about.
We have a real problem in our infield as far as run production goes. We have oney, Cabrera, who hits. The rest of the infield (Countin the utility players too, and catchers) have about as many HRs altogether as MCab and they are hitting a comobined. .219
This is not a formula for success in the major leagues.
There is no excuse for not hitting Vasquez.

Now 4 innings completed. Still not sure why they are not hitting Cy Vasquez? And Dan you jinxed Inge he made his first error and it was almost very costly and on such a routine play!

I’m afraid I have more expectations form our 3rd baseman than the ordinary fan who constantly texts his name as the most important Tiger of the game–every game. I swear he can fan 3 times with a guy on 3rd and hit into a DP with the bases loaded and still will outpoll some guy who has 3 hits and a 3 run HR!!!
I take it back—Vasquez is pitching quite well. Still, we should be putting up some better At Bats though.

I’m gonna be a crazy man if JL keeps playing Everett. In my mind–he is nothing more than a late inning defensive replacement. To put him in the lineup is simply giving a way an out over 80% of the time. How senisble is that?

Ya know its bad when Laird has been on base twice and 1-5 haven’t been on base yet. Lets get Rick some run support guys!!

Okay – lets hold em off now.

There is no way that kid Boesch should ever play another minor league game!

Okay – lets hold em off now.

Right on cue Brandon. Man on 3rd and 1 out into a DP.
Good to see us get to Vasquez but I must admit I was greedy enough to think we should get 3. Wasted MCab’s smart base-running.
We need a shut-down inning from Ricky here. That shot from Swisher looked bad. I think RP took it on the back of the shoulder. Hopefully it was a glancing blow.
I think they would be wise to have someone warming up right now.

2 for the price of 1!

Do you think they should leave Porcello in for at least the start of the 8th? Have have him leave with a good taste in the mouth??? Perry makes me nervous.

Great to see what we did from RP#1 today. We need that badly.
Not so sure about bringing in RP#2 for the 8th though. Tell you one thing. He walks one guy I’d yank him.

Are they taking Porcello out to ice the shoulder?

Sorry Perry you were great!

Absolutely, Rick needed to come out after seven. Joel Zumaya should have come in for the eighth & Valverde the ninth. If that didn’t happen because of Monday, that is Leyland’s fault. Props to Ryan though. Great job!

I think Porcello is fine although I am still he will ice it! He kinda was laughing after it happened.

Stood there like the house by the side of the road!

AMEN!! Could it be could Porcello be back or was it cold damp weather that hampered all hitting today?? Maybe a little of both. Valverde is great I don’t care was anyone says.
Tonight might be a different story.
Can Bondo turn the corner as well??

Excellent. Excellence

Tremendous win today!

Porcello effort was exactly what was needed for the first game of a double header after the bullpen was taxed on Monday.
Perry has been the 8th inning guy and has done well holding leads. He has had good command for most of his outing and has the ability to get the strike out to get out of a jam.
Hoping for six strong inning out of Bondo and for the bats to pick it up in game two.

RP2 did do a good job. The key for him is throwing more stirkes–which he did.
On paper it looks like a monumental task with Bondo facing Hughes. I expect we will see Avila, and if I were JL, I would have Kelly playing 3rd in the nightcap. Inge is black hole right now and Kelly adds another dimension to the lineup with his LHB and speed.

That is a very good point Rich. (Everett & Santiago with RP1 throwing)
I have a lot of confidence with Ramon at short but must admit, that Everett is clutch defender, my comfort level in critical situations is a little higher with him, though Ramon can pick it with anyone.

Wow, big win. Covered the split if nothing else. Tomorrow our horse against their horse. That’s a pick ’em. Tonight favors NY, obviously, but you never know.
I threw out Vasquez’s numbers this season coming in. We’ve had problems with him over the years, although overall, it’s about an even split when he pitches against us. I wasn’t suprised that we didn’t hit much, especially taking the lineup into account.
I will say that when Porcello pitches, I like Santiago and Everett in there. Tons of grounders. Rick looked as good as ever out there today. At 91 pitches after seven, I thought he should probably take a seat. He wouldn’t have finished the 8th, probably, so let Perry start his own inning. Perry is supposed to be one of our 8th inning guys, so…….it’s the 8th inning.
Inge is now driving even me crazy. And yeah, I do have to wonder who are those people who keep voting him player of the game? That’s gone beyond ridiculous. The other day Mario said “and Inge is on the list……..because he’s always on the list.” The entire voting thing is silly to start with. Personally, I’d rather be circled by Bert. 🙂

Sounds like Rick had a heck of a game, would have loved to see that. What a great win, I love clubbing teams by tons of runs, but really love when we can grind one out and have our pitching staff throw a gem. Like mentioned above, we got our split which is a task against these guys, and hopefully we can get one more for a series win (yes, very greedy)

As everyone knows, I’m a staunch Santiago supporter. There are uses for Everett, but you have to pick your spots. One is the afore mentioned Porcello starts. Adam can get starts against lefties. He can also go in late and have Santiago slide over to second. He does have value. Just giving him a start because “it’s time to give him a start” isn’t a good reason. Adam’s a good guy and will do whatever it takes to help the club.
Then again, for all I know, Santiago goes in there and says “I’m worn down, skipper.” 🙂
Organizationally (is that a word?) speaking, we may have to trade for a shortstop at some point in the future. Same with thirdbase.

Interesting—-JL DID give a start to Kelly at 3rd.
He does have a brain after all.
