Tuesday: Tigers at Twins

It’s pretty much a standard lineup for the Tigers tonight against the Twins. They’ll have a quick turnaround tomorrow with a noon game local time, but the fact that they have an off-day scheduled Thursday — their first off-day in three weeks — means manager Jim Leyland can use Wednesday to gives guys a game out of the starting lineup and essentially make it two days off. Leyland said already that he’ll do that with third baseman Brandon Inge Wednesday; Don Kelly will start in his place.

TIGERS
  1. Jackson, CF
  2. Damon, DH
  3. Ordonez, RF
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Boesch, LF
  6. Inge, 3B
  7. Sizemore, 2B
  8. Laird, C
  9. Everett, SS

To Ernie,
Thank you for teaching me the true meaning of being a Tiger fan! To love the game and appreciate all it is meant to be. You will forever be a Tiger, maybe the greatest of all. You will be greatly missed and not a game will go by that I wont think of you! Thanks for the memories! RIP Ernie Harwell, forever a Tiger!!! GO TIGERS 2010!!!! -Stacy

Let’s win this one for Ernie!

Darn shame.

I doubt that Ernie was gaining much enjoyment from life near the end and I had, in fact, worried about that as the past days and weeks have gone by. Now he’s finally getting a well earned rest. Goodbye, Ernie. None of us will ever forget you.

Rough night for Michiganders. I’m glad I didn’t watch the Red Wings, as that would have been painful.

Impressions of the the Tigers-Twins game:
.
Dontrelle looked absolutely spastic in the first two innings. When he took the mound in the third and before he’d even thrown a pitch, he’d calmed down and looked like a different guy. What a contrast. His body language tells the entire story when he pitches.
.
Blackburn threw Boesch a hanging breaking ball and Brennan, bless him, knew what to do with it. But except for the inning where we took him the other way, we got totally shut down by this guy. Why does this happen? Nick Blackburn?
.
Why did Cuddyer try to throw out Ordonez at first on his single to right? This is the big leagues and that was bush. Seems to me that Mr. Cuddyer needs to be shown the ground during one of his upcoming ABs. Doesn’t have to be tomorrow, but at some later point. Give him the old Gordie Howe treatment; wait two months then payback. Heck, Bonderman will do it.
.
We’ll need the win tomorrow to finish round one with the Twins at 3-3. Frankly, I’m getting tired of the Twins.
.
Here’s something to cheer you all up. While the Twins have made five playoff appearances under Ron Gardenhire since he took over in 2002, they’ve only won the first round that year then lost the ALCS. They’ve been immediately eliminated in every other appearance. And it’s not even close. The Twins’ postseason record under Gardenhire is 6-18. By contrast, the Tigers won 7 playoff games in 2006 alone, and joined the White Sox as the only Central Division teams to reach the World Series this decade. So………I guess the Twins only accomplishment is in messing up the Central for everyone else. Congratulations, Twins!

The Twins have tons of Divison flags flying at their stadium, that’s for sure. It is a coup to win your division and they are very good of at least keeping their fans happy by doing that. Not so, the Tigers. In ’06, I was depressed for a week after we lost it on the last day because we got swept by the Royals.
.
Some people think D-Train’s career is over. They feel uncomfortable about him. They aren’t used to such an animated pitcher on the mound. He talks constantly, moves around, makes faces. Reminds me of the “Byrd” in some ways. His mannerisms, at least. He doesn’t stress me out anymore, because he’s learned the art of pitching, not just throwing. He’s one of those guys who still could pitch a no-hitter. It wouldn’t surprise me!

I am also becomming comfortable with Dontrelle. What I am not comfortable with is not being able to hit Nick freaking Blackburn – when everybody and their brother has lit him up this year.
.
What the heck was Avila doing?? That was a very large bonehead move – was he even paying attention to his third base coach????
.
And the the Wings hmmmm.
.
Horrible night in Detroit between hearing about Ernie and our teams failed us.

Rookie mistake. Looked like Avila thought the ball went through and was so hell bent on beating out what was going to be a reeeeal close play at the plate, he didn’t even look at Lamont. We just make too many mistakes in Minnesota. We often hand them the game, and they know it and build confidence from it.
.
Dontrelle is doing fine. He’s always animated but during those first two innings he was out of character even for him. I was impressed with the demeanor he brought out in the 3rd inning and maintained for the remainder of his game. He takes on a confident calmness when he’s going good. He had that same calmness when he pitched that one good game last season in Chicago. I remember commenting on it at the time, said he showed me something.

They don’t even need Mauer. They literally swept us with one hand tied behind their backs. Of course, we handed them two games, all tied up in a pretty bow. That happens too often. When did we lose sight of the fact that pitching and defense wins ballgames? We can’t even trust an outfielder to catch a flyball, wind or no wind.
.
I hate to say this, but it appears we’re playing up to our talent level. Oh well, may as well enjoy watching the games even if we’re not going anywhere.
.
They bring in a LH pitcher so we PH Inge for Boesch then let Kelly hit against the lefty. If you’re down to your last guy, wouldn’t you rather hit Boesch and PH for Kelly? I complain about JL too much, so I’ll just leave it out there for anyone who wants to discuss that one.

Lots of solo homeruns today – 2 for both Avila and Cabrera – nice job guys! Too bad we couldn’t get more contribution. Bad to be swept, but I think we need the day off desperately.

Time to refresh and go get the Tribe.

Well said Tiger Girl I think that we are in desperate need of a day off. Unfortunately they get one and then another 17 day stretch without a day off. Interesting Twins never play more than 13 days without a day off. Conspiracey??? Ha ha.
.
Way too many errors – today it was Boesch with two run mistake – and we lost by one. Last night the baserunning gaff. Too bad there wasn’t anyone on base when they hit these homers.
.
Off to Cleveland.

How good is Cabrera? That was an awesome display of hitting today including that laser of a single he had his first time up.

I’m glad to hear Leyland address the fact that his outfielders need a lot of work on fundamental plays. As far as I’m concerned Raburn should never be left out there again and I’m starting to think the same thing of Boesch.

Need to win at least 2 against Cleveland with the Yankees coming up.

Gardenhire on Cabrera: “You saw Cabrera. We throw it inside to him and he hit it over the left-field fence and we threw it away and he hits it over the right-field fence.”
.
Yeah, that’s pretty good. Understatement of the year, right? There’s no limit to how good a ballplayer Miguel can be. He’s reached that status of “drop whatever you’re doing, Cabrera’s up.” Mickey Mantle status.
.
While they’re working with the outfielders, they may want to teach a couple of them which base to throw to. Letting the hitter take second on the throw is murder. Raburn in particular tries to turn every play into a great one. Just play the darned position, Ryan. Those runs we took off the starter’s ERAs last year have been restored so far this year. Defense. Can’t stress it enough. Play smart. We don’t need to be a .500 team.
