Saturday: Tigers vs. Angels

Magglio Ordonez is back in the starting lineup, but Jim Leyland said he’s going to DH him. Magglio said he was still sore, but otherwise fine. He compares the cramping of his abdominal muscles to back spasms.

  5. Inge, 3B
  6. Raburn, RF

  8. Sizemore, 2B
  9. Everett, SS

  4. Hideki Matsui, DH
  5. Kendry Morales, 1B
  6. Juan Rivera, LF
  7. Mike Napoli, C
  8. Brandon Wood, 3B
  9. Reggie Willits, CF

P: Scott Kazmir

I understand him going with a righty lineup but lefty’s are hitting .545 off Kaz this year!

how many runs is raburn going to cost the tigers this year, with his lack of defense

Interesting observation.
Glad to see Inge FINALLY get something done with a man on 3rd and less than 2.
He most often does not.
Hold your breath and hope nobody hits any liners to RF today!

I also wondered why Laird wasn’t bunting.

Wonder why my post above was reposted at a later time. I actually posted that before in the 1st inning.
Why is JL not bunting with Laird? The guy can bunt and he can run a bit–why not?
Santiago is getting a taste of what it was like to be Omar Infante. You hit but you don’t play.\

I thought that Bonderman’s effort in inning #5 was very impressive. He went through a tough AB with Rivera, and recovered from the back-to-back hits, that put the Angels ahead, quite nicley. He could have imploded.
We are seeing some pretty decent baseball by our Tigers in this homestand.
Raburn owes us one.

Well here’s your chance for a “Redemtption Song” Ryan. Let’s do something good.

The bottom of our order can look real bad when it is ‘loaded” up with these RHB. Raburn, Laird, Sizemore, Everett. Does not exactly strike fear in the minds of any LHP.
At least we got this thing tied up again but the poor hitting today with men on is painful to watch.

bottom of the line-up going to be a problem all year, does leyland know what a sac bunt is?

You could just see Bondo wilt there in the 6th and knew Rivera was gonna hit him.
What a break to get that out at the plate. Gotta take advantage and hope that JL realizes Bondo is done for the day.

what a ya know Damon can throw someone out!

Tigerfan8468, the bottom of the lineup will be a problem all year and I don’t know how that can be changed. Of course, I’m not as knowledgable about the Tiger minor league players as I should be.

Great day for Damon!

Was wondering who might close today, be it doesn’t now!

Should have said ” but it doesn’t matter now”

I told my wife while watching this game: “I like these Tigers. They have errors and only few runs, but I feel they wanna to win”. Now, they got it!

Another nice win and Damon shows the veteran leadership that was expected from him.
But, we have to start getting some contribution form the #5 thru #9 hitters. We have been fortunate that Bosch has done well but this is a real problem area for this team. Laird and Everett hitting .150 and .175 is potentially devastating.
I am surprised that Avila has been unable to fill that void that Laird has left.
Eddie Bonine pitched extremely well today.

Nice little 4-game winning streak here. Bonderman had another gutty performance, and I’ve been impressed with his game approach. He’s definitely not a kid anymore. We passed up on several bunting opportunities today, and I’d have thought we’d bunt in at least one of them. Never laid one down.
I’ll compliment Leyland and the team for not falling into protracted losing streaks over the past two years to date. Now if they can extend that into September………………
IMO, even more problematic than the 5-9 hitters is the overuse of the bullpen and the error riddled defense. I’m coming to the conclusion that you can’t put Raburn in the outfield at all. These plays all look like tough ones, but he’s turning them into tough ones. Most baseball games are close affairs and you can’t afford to hand out gift runs in the interests of adding punch to the offense.
Wins are wins, however, be it April, May, or September. Doesn’t have to be pretty, but problem areas need to be addressed. We aren’t going to win anything with big offensive innings alone.
I can’t believe there are people who didn’t want to sign Damon.
I can’t compliment the bullpen enough. That’s darned fine work.

So we rested Brennan Boesch after he hit a Grand Slam ? .. esp when lefties are hitting .545 off Kazmir ?

Had to work today, so just finished watching my DVR recording (boy, am I glad I recorded this one).
Shameful that Rodney want not given a standing 0. This guy was with the Tigers’ organization for 8 years. We watched him take the role of closer last year. All the remarks about his crooked hat…….so what! Rodney really struggled with the language, so I don’t think fans really appreciated him.
So glad I recorded this one! Terrific win.

hate to be so down on tigers, love them with all my heart, but ever since leyland has been manager, they have faded the second half ,so until they actually win it ,hard to feel good about anything they do.

The bullpen has been the best in the league. If they can consistantly get six innings out of Bondo and Willis, you have to be happy with that. The top three need go 7-8 innings. The good thing about the way the relievers are throwing is that they generally are not pitching in stress, so it is not as difficult on the arm. I do think that Leyland has done a good job with the bullpen so far.
I wanted Damon and felt we needed his hitting. I think his leadership has been a hugh bonus. The drawn out signing and stories in the press may have turned some off. Being a Yankee may have turned some, but I would say that most Tiger fans are glad he is a Tiger now.

Johnny Damon was always the kind of player you hated to see come up against you in key situations. He just has the knack of doing it in the clutch. With no disrespect to Granderson and Polanco, AJ and Damon are giving us the tablesetters we need at the top of the lineup.

I would expect to see Boesch, Avila, Santiago and if JL gets real bold, even Kelly (at 3rd or 2nd).
Time for Avila to break out. I believe he is going to be a better than average MLB ballplayer.
