Tuesday: Tigers vs. Twins

While the Twins were sound asleep in their team hotel, the Tigers arrived back home from Texas around 3:30 this morning for their big AL Central clash tonight. Still, a lot of them were here around the time they’d normally be at the park anyway, ready to go to work.

“Just getting back here felt awesome, even if it was at 4 o’clock in the morning,” Alex Avila said today.

Adam Everett remains day-to-day with his right hamstring strain, so Ramon Santiago is in the starting lineup once again. Everything else is pretty standard for Detroit’s lineup.

On the Twins’ side, you’ll notice Delmon Young and Jim Thome in at DH against Justin Verlander. Thome’s numbers off Verlander took a dive last year, when he went 1-for-6 with two walks and four strikeouts in two games. That one hit, however, was a home run, giving him seven homers out of 10 hits in 41 at-bats lifetime off Verlander.

Umps calling strikes balls are inexcusable, must be ‘destiny’ for the Twins. Extending the 2nd innings an extra two AB’s has probably cost JV going past 6 IP today.

JV dodged some bullets in the third but only a matter of time unless we somehow hit Liriano.

Hopefully that will put an end to the Raburn as outfielder experiment. How many times has he burned the team and Verlander to be specific? I remember a game in Anaheim last year with JV pitching where Raburn missed 2 or 3 plays in one game. Maybe Damon can’t throw but I’ll bet he would have caught that.

Nice to see the Tigs aren’t the only team for stranding runners.
Is going to need a minor miracle with Liriano likely to pitch the game out. Stranger things have happened.
JV has these innings where he just can’t throw a first pitch strike – 1 of 5 AB’s in both the 2nd and 4th innings and lucky to get out of both.
Wonder who is able/going to pitch some innings after JV ends after likely 5 now.

Very impressive job by Verlander getting out of the 5th after the leadoff triple. Need to see more innings like that….not an excessive amount of pitches used there.
.
On the flip side, the hitters look lost against Liriano. Hopefully they can catch a break and get a couple runs.

We’ve got at least 4 guys in the lineup that can bunt for a base hit, they need to start bunting. Maybe it will get Liriano off his game if he has to do some running around.

WHY does Inge NOT bunt!!!!!!!

Liriano’s slider is killing them.
Ramon as RHB should still have been above Sizemore and his plate discipline could have kept the pressure on Liriano and not let him escape the 5th.

Not sure what the wind is like up there tonight, but it sure has been a bit of an adventure with Raburn out there in left a couple of times.

I xcould have predicted that 3rd cursory walk to Thome was inviting disaster. I am surprised Gardenhire didn’t PR for him.
.
Raburn is NOT an outfielder. if they give Hardy a hit on that the scoreer should be terminated.
That was an easy catch, I mean easy. He had to run after it but that is what OF are expected to do.
.
Raburn consistently manhandles balls in important situations. He does not belong out there. You cannot make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.
.
JV flirted with this all night but he did not deserve that. Even after the stupid way he pitched Thome.

A lefty against Thome would have been a nice ending for JV rather than trying to sneak through the 6th.
These errors are going to kill any serious challenge for the division.
JV only throwing a first pitch strike 8 of 26 against Liriano’s 10 of 16 sure helped build the pressure. At least he didn’t get in any fast ball foul ruts.

We will see how JV handles the non-support. He pitched tonight. He made mistakes and he is still not at the top of his game, but he needed something from his mates. They failed to deliver.
.
Sizemore is an easy out. He either strikes out or dribbles to 2nd. I can usnderstand why JL did not bunt with Inge. In retrospect, yes, but he has been hammering and you can’t count on the aguys following him.
.
Pretty ticked off with the offense but I do think they will score at least one tonight.
.
I would have yanked Bonine when he hit the 9 hole hitter.
.
On the upside–JV might be “back”.
.
What a dumb move to “give” Sizemore the job. No disrespect to him but rather to management to think that dream would pan out. Way too much to expect. AJ, on the other hand is a gifted natural athlete. He will progress and I think the jury is out on Sizemore.

Let’s hope for another 9th inning miracle!

God, I am a Tiger. I forgot the Wings were playing as of an hour ago.
.
Tigers sucked tonight and let their Ace down when he needed it. Go to go and see how the Wings are doing.
.
Gotta do something about th emiddle of the infield.

Well just got home from the game – FREEZING COLD.
.
I can’t speak much to the strike zone in this all I can say is that the people right behind the plate weren’t happy a lot.
.
As far as Raburn while I agree that you have to give him and error and he probably should of had it, he ran a very long way to get to that ball. Its an error, but a tough one.
Now Sizemore that is a different story. We have been very spoiled here by Polanco’s play and now we have an average rookie. Way too many errors this year and Rich is correct as usual regarding Raburn and Sizemore. Santiago’s error was probably the most aggregious error it just didn’t wind up costing us like the others. At least Raburn and Sizemores were while trying to make great plays.
.
Verlander was better, but still way way way too many pitches.
.
Watching the WIngs now and trying to warm up.

GK

Now that was some kind of strike zone. About 8 feet across and six inches high. Favored Liriano but not Verlander, although Ni was finally able to pitch into it.
.
We weren’t going to win this game anyway with Liriano on a 23 inning scoreless streak, but there are still problems with the defense. Big ones, too. No team has ever won anything with this kind of play. They’re scrappy and battle hard, but this won’t get it done.
.
The thing with Raburn is, he’s not really a utility player. He’s a guy who’s agreeable to playing anywhere the manager puts him and that’s why JL likes him. Ryan doesn’t, however, play any of those positions well. If you want him to be a leftfielder, stick him out there and concentrate all his work on playing the position. Personally, I think his best position is secondbase.
.
Speaking of secondbase, I’ve seen nothing from Sizemore. Mediocre defender and most of his hits have been bloops and bleeders. “We just felt he was ready to step in” was the word. Well, how’s that going so far? “We” also thought Cale Iorg was the future at shortstop. We’re going to pay dearly all season long for not keeping Polanco. I never did like this decision. At this point, I’d rather start Raburn at second and bring up Clete Thomas so we can tighten up that defense, at least for later innings. There’s no good solution to the hole that’s been created, so that’s the best I can offer. I guess Sizemore can return to Toledo until the next time he’s ready to step in.
.
Despite Ni’s innings eating success tonight (with the help of the umpire), I don’t see him as helping us much. Without Bobby Seay, we may have to deal for another LHer.
.
Tightening up the defense is imperative. Job One. We can’t let these games with the contenders slip away. Minnesota is a far superior club and will get away from us if we don’t bunch some wins.

One bright spot, Jackson finally played a game without a strikeout.

Damm errors… we are the team more errors make all over MLB along with Marlins, and Twins are leaders in fielding percentage… Nowadays is the most important reason why they are leading central division and Tigers are second
. SOmetime I miss Polanco but actually Sizemore will give us happy moments in future ,sure

I was just disappointed and after the game switched to the Wings. I gotta wonder if Joe Girardi or Tony LaRussa were the manager of this team, what our record would be.

While I like Clete’s arm, he has already been on the DL 3 times. TJ surgery, a wrist problem?, and now hammstring. Supposedly, he’s about to come off the DL for the hamstring issues. And, he’s still young!. If they do bring him up, Jim will put him in the 3 hole and move Maggs to 5th. Just like clockwork.
