Wednesday: Tigers vs. Royals

As expected, Austin Jackson has the day off, his first such day this season. Jim Leyland said he went with Ryan Raburn to lead off over Johnny Damon because he didn’t want to stack Raburn, Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera back to back to back, right-handed hitters all. Damon breaks up that stretch in the second spot.

Leyland said he’s going to try to give Zumaya day off today, but that he could use him if needed.

Well getting ready to head down to the game with a few friends. Was supposed to go yesterday, but the weather didn’t really interest me that much especially with a 5 year old. Let hope this team can get out to a lead today, while these comebacks are exciting it isn’t how you want to play every single game. We aren’t always going to run into bad pens.

Ironic that Carlos just said yesterday: “We’ve been working [pitchers] more, I think. We’ve been more patient at the plate, every at-bat. Everybody’s getting good at-bats, you know, putting pressure on the defense.” So today he swings at the first pitch for a quick out. He can be a real momentum killer.
.
So what’s going on with Damon? I thought he was better than this. We should be getting more than a good clubhouse presence for the $8M Mr. Ilitch is paying him.

I think JL should consider flipping Brandon and Carlos in the batting order. At least then Brandon would get a chance to drive in some runs and his hits wouldn’t go to waste. The bottom 1/3 of the lineup isn’t doing much with his ability to get on base early in the season. How many times so far has he put himself in scoring position with a double only to be stranded by those behind him?
.
I’d like to see Rick get a couple quick innings here to keep his pitch count down. The bullpen really needs him to go further than the 5th inning.

2 pitches, 2 outs for Carlos. Way to work the pitcher and put pressure on the defense!

0 outs, 3 runners, our best hitter at the plate… DOUBLE PLAY! This year I want to reduce my worries, but it’s so frustrating… If they play so with Kansas, what they can do with Twins and White Sox?

I still think JL doesn’t manage well … except when he pinch hits .. they work a lot of times ..
.
Tigers might be among the worst in plate discipline. Our lead off hitter out on the 1st pitch. Damon has a slow start but I like his AB’s.. not only this one but also in the other games. Miggy seems to be concentrating on every AB like JL wanted.
.
CG sometimes looks like he doesn’t want to be here. Like he is being forced to play.

Well, phooey, I thought we’d win this game. Time is running short guys. Top of the 8th.

If the Royals keep hitting our pitching like this, I hate to see what a good team will do. We’re lucky they only scored 6 runs on those 16 hits (through 8 innings).
.
Wow, Carlos actually saw more pitches in this AB than in his previous 3 combined! Of course he still strikes out.

JL sure made a bonehead move by PH Kelly instead of Avila. You are down 3 with the tying run at the plate and yopu PH with a guy with ZERO major league HRs? Last I checked Avila had the strength to go yard–after all he did out-homer Laird last year in 340 less ABs. Not smart.
.
Laird has cost us defensively this year too.
.
KC not only beats us but they make us look like a minor league quality team when they do.
.
Kendall, Podsednik et al!!?
.
Not impressed with Coke.
.
Also not impressed with JL using Bonine–his only legitimate long reliever, at the end of this game.
.
MCab has been struggling lately –especially with the big hit.

I’m glad the Royals are gone. Those guys drove me absolutely crazy. Everything they hit was golden. They can’t be THAT good.
.
All that aside, this 6-3 record is a mirage. The Tigers have not played well so far. Bad defense, bad decisions on defense, people throwing to the wrong base consistently, and a lot of bad situational hitting. The team BA is also a mirage. This club will have to pick it up, starting on Friday, or they’ll be buried before you know it.
.
Sending Kelly up to PH in that situation was Leyland playing a hunch. Why use him when you’ve got an experienced hitter in Santiago? Ramon was going in on defense anyway. Let’s lose the hunches and make some sound baseball decisions, shall we? If you want to use Kelly, start him. I’d rather have Clete anyway. And keep the bunt on with Laird. Another hunch?
.
Leftfield is a problem on defense. Jackson is fine, Ordonez is fine (nice throw to the plate), but LF is a mess.
.
I can’t watch this stuff all year. Let’s get it together.

The Tigers make the Royals look like a dominant team giving up 45 hits in a 3 game series! Pitching is an issue this year, plate discipline is not in their strategy, they miss Polly’s experience in the infield with Miggy and Sizemore defensive “rookies”, etc. Laird is not the same defensive catcher he was last year and LF is a scary. Giving up a 5 run lead, not pitching a shutdown inning after a rally and too many walks has got to change or this will be a long season for JL, the staff and the 25 man roster! This was an ugly series and they were very lucky not to be swept!

Jim

I don’t like the day games as near impossible for me to watch them.
I can understand why JL went with the righties against Davies as whilst his early 2010 splits are .167 RHB/ .364 LHB, his career splits marginally favour righties .296/.270.
.
I hope the 2 days off doesn’t affect AJax nice groove he was getting into with 5 hits and 3 walks the past 3 games. The coming 20 day schedule is going to give everyone plenty of AB’s.
.
Hopefully just a case of early days with some ugly RISP stats, all lower order: Laird 0/7; Kelly 0/6; Ramon 0/6; Avila 0/4; Sizemore 1/6; Raburn 0/2 with Maggs 2/10 unusual with his hot start.
The excellent to acceptable is Cabs 6/13; AJax 5/9; Inge 4/13; Damon 3/9; Carlos 3/12 & Everett 1/4. The ‘smoke & mirrors’ 6-3 record at least provides JL some breathing space.

Today’s game was an awful game to watch. I’m guessing Leland is going to use his 25 man roster come hell or high water. In the long run, it may work if they stick to it and guys have to be ready to play. On the other hand, there are some players who still might resent not playing every day the way they are used to. The lack of hitting decent pitching is a concern for sure. Damon looks like he’s lost at the plate. It’s probably good they have this road trip and are playing someone different than KC & Cleveland. Today’s game was a disappointing performance, however way you spin it.

Well went to the game – and I was hopeful in the first inning when Magglio hit his homer and Cabrera had his double. Well then for the most part they lapsed right back into the same old same old routine. Bases loaded and Miguel hits into a stinking double play.
.
But lets face it the starting pitching with a few exceptions has just not been good enough. And I think that people are right while it is nice to have this record so far, I do think that it is a mirage. Only two game did we have a lead and keep a lead and one of those probably only happened because Johnny Peralta threw the ball away in the opening day game. I like the comeback wins but it would be nice to look like the team was in control at any point of the game.

GK

There are such obvious problems on this team. Seems a shame that ST went so well so as to justify the inaction by management.
.
Laird seems to me like a very average platoon type player. One that you would love to have as a backup. I hope he proves me wrong but I just don’t see him being a “performer”. It’s just not good enough to have a couple of guys in the lineup that you have to feel pleasantly surprised when they get a hit and shocked when they get a clutch hit.
.
The inept bottom of the lineup makes it absolutely critical that Guillen becomes dangerous for in the 5 hole.
.
Funny how dominant some of our pitchers were in ST and then to struggle when they come north. Porcello actually surprised me yesterday as to how easy he was to hit.
.
Be nice to see a Ricky Romero type performance from one of our guys to turn things around.
.
Badenhop is doing a pretty nice job for Florida. He has been the sleeper in that deal with them.
.
A day off—it already feels like it is badly needed.

BTW—-G-Man is pitching very well down on the farm so far. Dominating the MILB hitters. Stands to reason he will be called up soon if Bonderman or Willis fails.

Hey Dan, good one on Laird. It is hard to replace a Pudge. So he throws a few guys out but can’t drive any in. You know how I feel about JL. It is a long season but the season is here. I just like watching my Tigers. Speaking of watching (or not) them, we go from a 1 pm game on Monday to the next week in California to a 10 pm game. GK, you will probably be tired next Tuesday. 81 degrees in Grand Rapids today. Love it! Go Tigers, 2010! –Dave

seems like forever since i posted here….
.
anyways, i’ll be at the games against the angels on tuesday and wednesday. hope they can take advantage of a struggling angels team early in the season.
.
that being said, it seems the tigers have a hard time playing in angel stadium. been lucky as of late, as i’ve gone on days where they’ve won. win or lose though, i always have fun at these games. last game i went i sat right next to the bullpen as todd jones warmed up to make the save. last year was a joke because i was on business trips both times the tigers came into town. horrible scheduling by the MLB and my work. i’m glad they coordinated better this year.
.
also hoping to catch the tigers v. dodgers in may.
.
anyways, go tigers!

Your right Dave between watching the Wings and the Tigers I will be toast – a walking zombie.
