When Lakeland really lives up to its name

Looking out at the outfield at Joker Marchant Stadium and it’s basically a series of small lakes. Is that bad?

The weather has been bad enough here today that the Tigers canceled their scheduled game against the Phillies before 9am. That way, the Phillies split squad didn’t even have to get on the bus, presumably. The Tigers worked out indoors, with hitters taking their swings in batting cages.

As for the pitchers, they had a meeting with Jim Leyland, who basically told them what he told reporters yesterday about the importance of throwing strikes and getting outs that way.

“To be honest with you, I said, ‘You know, there’s days when I think we have too much pitching, and then sometimes when I’m at home at night scribbling on my pad, I don’t think we have enough pitching.

“I know the quality is there. It’s just a matter of getting it to execute. We have enough talent. You keep waiting for somebody to jump out at you and make your decisions really easy. It’s real interesting.”

Meanwhile, the pitchers who were scheduled to throw against the Phillies today will instead throw Saturday. Jeremy Bonderman and Nate Robertson will pitch the home split-squad game against the Yankees along with Dontrelle Willis, who was the originally scheduled starter. Leyland said they’ll pitch three innings each. If they don’t get to their pitch count in that time, they’ll presumably finish out in the bullpen.

Other tidbits …

  • Brandon Inge is still on track to start Saturday’s game against the Yankees at third base, playing three innings. “I still get aches and pains, but nothing at all on the scale of what I had last year,” he said. “As long as I don’t have that sharp pain, I’m fine.”
  • Speaking of pain, Bobby Seay threw from a longer distance Thursday and felt fine, according to Leyland. So he’s progressing.
  • The regulars slated to make the trip to Port St. Lucie against the Mets are Magglio Ordonez (who’s now healthy) and Carlos Guillen. Ramon Santiago, Alex Avila, Casper Wells, Don Kelly, Ryan Strieby, Robinzon Diaz, Audy Ciriaco and Gustavo Nunez are also on the travel roster. Max Scherzer, Eddie Bonine, Alfredo Figaro, Zach Miner, Andy Oliver, Ryan Perry, Josh Rainwater and Jay Sborz are the pitchers on the trip.
