Tigers make first cuts of camp
The Tigers made their first roster cuts of camp Tuesday morning by assigning catchers John Murrian and Eric Roof to Minor League camp.
Both players were part of the catching contingent the Tigers brought into camp to help catch bullpen sessions for the many pitchers they brought to Spring Training.
The 23-year-old Roof is the son of Tigers instructor Gene Roof. He appeared in two official games this spring and had one at-bat. Detroit selected him in the 18th round of last summer’s First-Year Player Draft.
The 21-year-old Murrian did not appear in a Spring Training game. He was Detroit’s ninth-round pick last summer. He and Roof will both be starting their first full pro seasons; they both spent last summer at short-season Class A Oneonta.
The moves reduce Detroit’s Spring Training roster to 51 players.
