Monday night: Tigers vs. Twins

It’s the standard lineup for a left-hander, the same lineup Brian Duensing pretty much command a week and a half ago at the Metrodome. We’ll see how it goes.

The big story for the Twins is that Joe Mauer is catching the nightcap, a situation in which he would normally DH. Instead, Jason Kubel is the DH, with Carlos Gomez added to the lineup in center field for a speed factor near the bottom of the order.

TIGERS

  1. Raburn, LF
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Ordonez, RF
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Thames, DH
  6. Inge, 3B
  7. Granderson, CF
  8. Laird, C
  9. Everett, SS

P: Justin Verlander

TWINS

  1. Denard Span, RF
  2. Orlando Cabrera, SS
  3. Joe Mauer, C
  4. Jason Kubel, DH
  5. Michael Cuddyer, 1B
  6. Delmon Young, LF
  7. Carlos Gomez, CF
  8. Matt Tolbert, 3B
  9. Nick Punto, 2B

P: Brian Duensing

That lineup doesn’t look that much better than today’s. Huff needs to sit for the rest of the year. I’d rather see Avila DH against righties considering he will take a few pitches and has shown alot more promise than Huff.

I’ve got to admit I’ve got a bad feeling about the rest of this series especially with the way the offense has been hitting basically all year. Any chance we’ll beat Cy Pavano tomorrow?

About 20 minutes to game time and I have this horrible pit in my stomach. Does anyone else feel like that. I guess I just always assumed all year this team would blow it, then I started to think well maybe?? But now yuk. We don’t hit Duensing and well we all know about Pavano which has been completely hittable all year and yet the Tigers fail. Tonight will tell us a lot. It will not be over but two nails are in the coffin. This weekend the Twins will face Grienke for the second time this YEAR (and yes I mean year) along with DiNardo who they knocked around last weekend and Hochevar who is real hittable.
,
We on the other hand will get Garcia, Hudson and Danks.

aaaaahhh fellas ~ so quickly you forget 2003! Maybe i have a better perspective since i went to all of the home games that year…..and so just sit back and enjoy exciting baseball. Enjoy a competitive team and a great pitching staff.

true true……well, IMO polanco got robbed…so he would have been on base

Don’t get me wrong I love the Homerun he clobbered it. However why don’t any of our homers come with runners on. It feels like we hit a lot of solo shots. In fact in general we don’t put up many crooked numbers.

here they go strand a runner on third with less than two outs. It is the same thing over and over and over again.

I just can’t believe he’s got Clete in there already. I swear Leland is in love with that guy. Who do you want batting with a pennant race on the line? He just makes me sick.

He pulls Maggs early now twins are back in it and we’re stuck the Thomas. aughhhhhh!

I can’t either. There is no way that Magglio should be out of this game right now. Magglio is your hottest hitter right now and we need more runs. Ridiculous.

It seems like JV has one rough inning every game lately. I hope that was it for this game. But he is up to 100 pitches after 6 innings. That means the bullpen soon. The Tigers need more runs. Nothing seems safe against these Twins in September.

agreed illinofan. How did you like how Mauer got away with that catch behind the screen. That ump was right there staring it in the face and still didn’t make the right call. Chalk it up to screwing the Tigers again. Way to go Ump.

Actually, the White Sox pushed Peavy back a day. He’ll now face the Tigers on Friday.

You are all right. Maggs = $18 mil = 2-run double = grab some bench early. Why oh why? Rest him for the plane trip back to Venezuela on October 5?

that’s a big big run!

Jason – are you kidding me. That is incredible, it is one thing if the White Soxs were trying to make it into the playoffs but to do is just to be an A#### is incredibly bush league of him. I always knew that I hated the White Soxs.

Two seeing eye singles – and Mauer is up. Here we go

Congratulations Leyland once again you make the decision to leave Verlander in there and it was a horrible more. Well once again you cost the Tigers this win probably. This is crap.

I swear he wants Verlanders arm to fall off.

The good news is that we have a six-time All-Star and former batting champion ready to tack on some insurance runs this inning. Oh wait…

OK….. Is everybody still with us?…… Did we lose anybody? When I call your name please answer by saying present……

Boy between Polanco’s flub and Granderson’s flub – boy are they choking.

Boy Rodney deserved better than that. Call it what is was two ERRORS A ROUTINE GROUND BALL TO SECOND AND A FLYBALL YOU SHOULD GET EVERYTIME. THANK GOD IT DIDN’T COST US THE GAME, BUT RODNEY DOESN’T DESERVE THAT BLEMISH ON HIS ERA EITHER.

You think if Granderson doesn’t hit the home run Rodney gets’em 1 2 3?

This blog kills me. I was taking attendance “after” the game was over, hoping everyone still had a pulse.
.
6 points.
Justin just yanked our behinds out of the fire. A true stopper. Thanks Justin.
.
JL please don’t take Magglio out ever again after 5 innings no matter what the lead. Ludicrous, and it could have cost us the game.
.
Placido, relax. It’s out of your system right?
.
And Curtis, that one is out of your system too, right?
.
We live to fight another day. Hope still intact.
.
I really think our Tigers will get to Cy Pavano this time around….honest GK.

I knew we can beat Duensing! All his wins were at home, except CWS games, where as we see now, the White Sox gave their series anyway. I mean their unbelievable desire to stop us. Good work, team. GO TIGERS! This shameless resistance made by your division opponents should be broken.

The workload JV has gone through this season is unbelievable – sure hope he has no ill effects down the track.
A really good gritty game made a lot closer with some poor late judgement calls by our regulars. Besides Curtis and Polly’s, Miggs let the soft grounder from Span go in the 8th when he thought Polly had it covered. JV would have then had 2 outs and none on. Miggs did however made a great play to end the innings digging out Inge’s shocker of a throw on a routine play.
.
JL nearly killed the game with his defensive moves. Why on earth bring Clete on so early when he is having a poor second half of the season and Maggs is clearly in form and now also hitting when RISP.
.
One thing about the Tigs this year is expect the unexpected. With the next two matchups favouring the Twins, would not be surprised to see the Tigs win them both, provided JV gives up on the left/right matchups and go with the form righties with Carlos.
