Oh, murcey! Purcey. 0-2 with a 7.01 ERA. A LHP. The Tigers have scored 4 runs in about 11 innings against him over 2 years. Then look at JV’s record against Toronto. 0-2. 14 runs in 8 innings. Yikes!

Lucky for JL they let you move on from kindie without passing. He is still trying to jam square pegs in round holes!!
Curtis is 0 for 7 against Purcey so he has to get lucky some time. A bit like a gambler who keeps going and can only remember his occassional win. Maybe JL sees if Clete can go 3 for 4, surely Curtis can?? Ramirez or even Carlos would have made more sense.

I have a problem. I love my Tigers, and have all my life but Granderson should not bat at all against Lefties. His stance is WAY too open to be able to do anything with left handed pitching. Hard headed Leyland refuses to play the righty Ramirez and we are stuck with Raburn’s sketchy outfield play. I appreciate what Raburn has done at the plate on occasion but every Homer or gapper he hits has to precede or follow an Error or misplay or two. Finally JL has to let Avila catch Mr. Verlander eventually, his power so far has impressed me (gotta admit thats a sweet Lefty swing). Laird hasn’t been capable of throwing anyone out since Tampa and aside from last night he hasn’t hit in 2 months.
Oh Well, Tigers in first JV pitching tonight lets get some runs TIGERS!!!

****Gabe****

I knew Jl would be his stubborn (dare I say, stupid) self and bat Granderson once again. he seems compelled to prove can or to “make” Curtis hit lefties. The danger is Curtis gets a bloop single and JL figures “see, he can hit lefties”, and then throws him out there the rest of the way.
.
No, this should have been a Wilking Ramirez day.
.
At least Curtis attempted a bunt the other day. Unsuccessful, but a pretty good bunt and he almost beat it out. That’s about his only chance.
.
Drives me nuts tht JL thinks he can put an automatic out in the lineup when his Ace is on the mound. We all know the hitting shuts down when JV throws so can we afford this?
.
I hope Curtis proves me wrong today. His difficulties with southpaws this year actually make me worry about his career. I used to think Granderson (with the development of some self-confidence) could be a possible super-star. His performance this year has changed my opinion.
.

Hey, Rich, or anyone else! Check out my questions in the preceding Ordonez blog. If you have any answers, I would appreciate reading them. I forgot the possibility that Maggs may be recovering from the use of some illegal substance as one of the possibilities for his poor performance this year.

Go Raburn – surely the most (only??) improved Tiger bat of 2009. So good to see him getting more comfortable at home.

They were giving Inge nothing again happy to give up the walk unless he chased out of the zone.
.
I think Maggs is a very sensitive guy and the combination of an early season preventing a steady buildup, being booed by his fellow countrymen at the WBC, his wife’s illness, then a slow start building into the contract issue all weighed on him. Getting to the age when the body doesn’t recover as quickly and carries aches day to day wouldn’t help either.

Well so far the team has looked very poor against purcey. They have let him off the hook twice and Inge hacked at ball 4. no wonder he is about 3 or 4 in Ks in the American league.
.
Laird’s bunt was ill-advised too–granderson was stealing I believe and had the bag. Pull the bat back and take the pitch Gerald.
.
JV deserves better than this. The fans deserve better than this..
.
The guy is wild. Put the screws to this kid and make him pay.

Infuriates me to see a lacklustre offense just about every time Verlander pitches.
.
A couple of lucky bounces or a 3 run-HR and Verlander may not win this one.

I don’t like the way this is going so far. They let Purcey off the hook and now he seems to be settling in. Meanwhile JV cannot make one mistake.

Clutch Cabrera = 4 LOB.

JV wont be able to keep dodging bullets for too much longer. Some patient at-bats would be good.

How does a fantastic individual performance like that by JV
not fire up your team or at least tell them hey we’re in a game get me some 2 runs and we’ll win this.

Have to keep reminding myself, Miggs is only 26……

We got a break and took advantage. For one run anyway–but for the life of me I can’t figure why MCab does not crush LHP like these.

Very dicouraging. I think Verlander burned himself out last inning. He has had some very poor 6th innings this year.
.
As bad as that was, and Verlander was bad, you have to blame this team for not scoring for him again and for not being able to apply the coup de grace with ‘add-on” runs. This is something that has hurt us all year.
.
They get a couple or sometimes even just one, then go comatose for awhile.
.
How different a game is it if MCab has a good AB (he has not had one today) and gets a hit off this rube last inning?
.
I sometimes can hardly believe how badly this team performs.

Ugh! Opposite field homer. No Tiger seems to be able to hit anything. What breakfast cereal are they not eating?

That canon shot sure blew this game apart. Will be amazing if JV finishes the 6th without any further damage. …..Thank goodness for the pickoff!!

7th inning and we have 3 runs to get. The bats better heat up.

Who’s our stats guy? I swear we lose every game when we lead off with a homerun. Glad we won’t the Jays in October.

Encarnacion a .203 hitter. Double ugh.

Encarnacion a .203 hitter. Double ugh.

JV knows how to grind these days. Previously giving up the homers on two curveballs, he would let the annoyance get the better of him and fallen apart.

Lord have mercy!!!

Illinoifan, perhaps you’ll receive that miracle.

How does my post to Illinoifan appear before theirs’. Gotta love cyberspace.

Unless a miracle happens in the bottom of the 9th, the Tigers will have lost 6 of 8 games to the 12 games under .500 Blue Jays. That a way!

Oh, I can’t watch. This is gonna kill me.

I wish all I had to say was “miracle” and they would win every game. Whew! Huff really came through tonight. A great win. Now if the Indians can hold those Twins, there might be a little more breathing room.

With a little help from our Jay friends, I know one game we didn’t lose Tracey!! :-)
I hope the guys at the game stayed to the end tonight!!

Well the miracle happened along with a couple of errors, but a win is a win!!!

I had some excellent gloomy comments prepared, some almost poetic, but Huff ruined all that for me. :-)
.
Aubrey said that was the biggest homer of his career, alongside his first career homer. That’s nice. Glad he got the opportunity over here with us.
.
Sounds like there was a real party going on in the clubhouse after the game.
.
Good bullpen work for the second straight game after that nosedive. Fu Te Ni was effective. I was at the first spring training game when he pitched with all the photographers from his home country there, and thought it was good to finally have someone from the Pacific Rim, and hoped he’d do well. He’s done better than I expected, a hidden but major contributer this season.
.
Jeremy Sowers shut out Minnesota for seven innings, but Chris Perez came on in the 8th. The inning opened with an Astrubal Cabrera error (Scutaro anyone?) and that opened the floodgates for a six-run inning. Oh well.
.
I don’t know what it will take to get our hitters going. It seems like we can’t hit anybody’s starter, no matter who it is. We’re not going to become an offensive juggernaut, especially at this point in the race, but it would be nice to win an easy one from time to time. Guess that’s not our style. Just have to get wins, as that’s the best way to reduce that magic number.
.
Is it just me, or did Granderson look like he was having better ABs tonight?
.
–Rich

Rich regarding Granderson, maybe since he actually had two walks, but the advantage he may of had is that most of the bad pitches were at his head, it is the low ones he cannot lay off of. Still cannot believe Leyland keeps running him out there.
.
Well another dramatic comeback. Tiger Girl I am sure that your husband was crying all the way home. It was like the rains came and the bats heated up for only that short period of time. I have lost count in how many comeback or last inning games that I have witnessed in person this season, but it has to be 5 or 6. Although I have to say I didn’t think it would be last night either. I was completely disappointed in the quality of the AB’s. I don’t even know what to say about Justin except that they hit it like they knew it was coming. I don’t know if his breaking stuff wasn’t working last night (hard to tell from where I sit) but man he was cruising along and then BANG a 5 spot..
.
The guy next to me said it looked as though I was slipping into a clinical depression.
.
Hopefully the guys will buckle down against Tejada tonight. And I hope karma doesn’t kick me in the but, but I am not sorry to see Morneau out for the season.

What an exciting comeback! I was so bummed they didn’t put Guillen in when Huff came up, but I had to eat my words on that – what a rush to see a 3 run homerun (I hear about them, rarely see them!). I don’t even care that we won on a horrible play – a win is a win at that point. Didn’t even mind getting rained on – by the way, I saw nothing in the forecase about rain! But my sister said it was a sign when it started raining and sure enough it was!

Poor husband – he got us the tickets, but got forced to set with his wife and 2 sister in laws who are Tiger fans – not his night!!! Thank you Aubrey, you made a believer out of me!

Justin looked so in command and was blowing people away, then all of a sudden they hit everything like a bullet, but he did regroup – was surprised to see him brought back out to start the 7th, but the pen did its job – good to see them getting back on track.

Funny – you don’t realize how big MCab is until he is standing next to Everett. And you don’t realize how slow FuTe Ni pitches until you see him after Verlander!
