Zumaya to have surgery Aug. 21

Joel Zumaya is slated to have surgery August 21 to correct the bone shard from the stress fracture in his right shoulder. Dr. James Andrews will conduct the procedure at his offices in Pensacola, Fla.

who cares Zumaya was a one hit wonder. No offense Jason you are doing your job. It is more just the situation with him. He is always just a game away from the DL.

I care. Are you really ready to give up on a 25 year old that throws hard and has proven big league success? That is down right foolish. I hope he gets his shoulder right, Knapp works with him next year and get his arm angle corrected again and he starts pitching to his potential. Get well soon Zoom Zoom.

I want Zumaya to do well, but come on I am not going to hold my breath. He has been out more than in. And for all the moaning I have heard on this site about how Miner sucks, Galarraga sucks, Bonderman, and Robertson suck and whoever else you want to throw in there. Zumaya has personally blown 6 save opportunties and that doesn’t even count the games that he just plain put out of reach. He looked at the beginning of the year he might turn it around but as exciting as the guy can me he really hasn’t been useful (in baseball) since 2006. How much of a rope are you supposed to give him??? Is this what his 3rd surgery in 3 years?? How many stints on the DL does that make. I don’t wish the guy ill, I just wish he would figure it out or stop wasting any hope that he might get it together??

I hope all goes well for Zoom.
In many respects, Zoom typifies what I see wrong with this team’s management – a still young kid with little mound experience, back from a series of major injuries and immediate high expectations placed on him to do late innings work and our closer-elect in waiting. You would think he was one of the many earning the millions and not his 6 or $700K.
Zoom lacked the experience and apparent guidance to stop his self destructive path of constantly trying to throw as fast as possible (didn’t he reach 102 or 103) rather than pitch out of jams.

I am skeptical of Zumaya ever again positively contributing to the Detroit Tigers. It is amazing that he could have been so immature to have injured himself in 2006 playing “Guitar Hero”. That sounds like something a 10-year-old would do. However, I hope the Tigers don’t trade him now because his trade value is so low.

My Tiger heart hopes all goes well and Zumaya gets “fixed” and comes back with a vengeance and purpose.
.
My human mind tells me this is less than probable. Zoom has showed glimpses of incredible ability but I fear that even a repaired arm will not be enough to overcome the youthful invincibility syndrome and MPH fixation that seems to plague his evolution from thrower to pitcher. I wish him well but I just don’t think it is going to happen for him. If you can get something really good for him I say go for it.
.
I love to watch good baseball and am disappointed with bad baseball. Unfortunately our Tigers have been the author of a lot of bad baseball the last few years and have provided only enough good baseball to whet my appetite.
.
I think the architect of the above is Jim Leyland. I think JL has been in an enviable positon of resting on his laurels. He has many attributes and a vast amount of baseball experience and wisdom. But he also is arrogant and not willing to adjust to the times. The players probably really like him. They respect him. But I don’t think he can motivate them or push them beyond their abilities. It takes a really good manager to be able to do that. I retired last year—Jim should have too.

I hope Zoom recovers and can pitch MLB again. It’s what he loves and I hope his recovery is complete. I’d love to see him in a Tiger uni again. He brought such an excitement to our team and the fans when he’d run onto the field. That’s what I miss most and all his emotion. On the other hand, I’m not sure if he’s closer material. Perhaps, if he’s healthy and more mature, I’d feel more positive. Rodney has the closer mentality, not sure if Joel is there yet.

And, Dan, your remarks hit the nail on the head. He’s stubborn and arrogant. I think the extension was a mistake and wrote Lynn Henning and told him so several months ago when he was pushing for a Leland contract. And I’m not basing my opinions on his age, either. I don’t think that has anything to do with it. He’s been that way all his life. We don’t really know how the players feel about him. They can’t exactly say they don’t like his decisions, but if their anything like some of us, they probably get pretty frustrated.

Dan, that’s an accurate assessment. Well put.

Suggestion for Leyland. On a 3-1 pitch to Polanco with 2 out and grandy on 1st. R-U-N.
.
You know Polly is gonna hit a strike either fair or foul anyway so why not take the opportunity to give Grandy a head start?
.
Bucholz is shutting us down. JV needs to give up none today I fear.

Bay is up and I’ll say right now that Everett is too far over toward 2nd base.

Time to get your Ace some runs. Thomas is leading off but he has gone into struggle mode lately. Seems whenever he comes up from the minors he does very well but then starts to fade.

Aflack?

Jim Bunning?

Is Raburn running OK? He looked like he was not going ful out on that infield single.
.
Laird has 25 RBI’s this year. I suggest that this team cannot survive next year with easy outs and no production from Laird and Everett. Laird is capable of much better than that. I know he has had to focus a lot of his attention on the new pitching staff but he needs to contribute offensively.

Bunning it is.
.
Granderson is a smart kid but all the times he hits the ball to 1st base you would think he would athink that what if they were going to 3rd base. I bet I would beat a bunch of them out or get on on the throw.
.
So why not slap that way or drop down the odd bunt?
.
I do not fault Curtis completely for his approach and feel that JL is the guy that should be telling his batting instructor to get this worked on.
.
1 run today is not going to be enough. They need at least 2 more. Probably 3.

JV is pitching another beaut. If we can get a guy on here JL has to be prudent enough to try to manufacture a run from it. Pinch-run, bunt, hit & run, something.

Polanco is really hitting the ball and has had some bad luck today.
.
Raburn was all over that pitch from Bucholz. That is an important run and this is an important inning for JV.
.
Bottom of the order and a shut-down inning needed to punctuate a statement.

Nice to be on this side of a 3-hitter for a change.
.
Time for a decision now from JL. JV will not want to come out and our bullpen is a bit of crapshoot. With Ellsbury and Reddick coming up I would expect we will see Bobby Seay.

That’s the problem with not bringin in the LHP.
.
JV has to buckle down, make sure he doesn’t walk anyone and concentrate on the hitter.
.
He really should not be in there.

Holy cow—what do I know?
That was amazing! And they knew what he was gonna throw them..
.
Now what?

I know we will get Rodney but I wish it were to be Lyon.

Whew.
.
I just wonder how good Rodney could be if he could throw strikes more.
