Magglio starts again, Laird gets a rest

Jim Leyland isn’t saying that his Magglio Ordonez-Clete Thomas platoon is over, but it basically sounds like he’s taking Ordonez’s situation on a day-to-day basis.

“I think he’s swinging the bat freely right now,” Leyland said, “so I’m going to play him for another day. I think he gives us the best chance tonight.”

That’s how Leyland is filling out his lineup these days with the guys he has. Of course, Leyland also has said several times that he’ll really like a lineup going into a game and then watch it fail to produce, such as last night.

Gerald Laird, meanwhile, is getting a day out of the lineup, presumably to get some rest. Odd, though, that it would come in the middle of the series, rather than using the getaway day to essentially get him 48 hours of rest. Perhaps Leyland wants Laird to get a shot at Kevin Millwood at Scott Feldman Wednesday, since he has caught him.

By the way, the Tigers did not alter their lineup at all based on the Rangers’ pitching change from Vicente Padilla to Doug Mathis for tonight.

  3. Clete Thomas, LF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B

  7. Brandon Inge, 3B
  8. Ramon Santiago, 3B

I’ll be on the, what do you call it, tweedledee, or tweedledum, or whatever, @beckjason. I kid.

A good a lineup as any. Hope Dusty remembers what to do.

Given how desperate the offense has become, real surprised they haven’t sent Raburn down with his option remaining and bring Ramirez back. Sure he is going to strikeout 1 in 3 but at least he might get some hits.

Get bold and bring up Avila. His AA numbers are quite good.
Need a spark of energy from someone!

It seems like we are the only team that is yet to make a trade.
Hitting 11 of 14 in the AL and 13 of 14 the past month should require urgent action and a major shakeup. Further having early performers playing hurt is a zero end game exercise with diminishing returns. .
.
Our second half swoon looks ominously on track with the Tigers 4-7 since the break.
With 64 games remaining, Maggs requires a further 46 games and 231 at bats to reach his 2010 option. At this rate the season will be long gone before this becomes an issue.

Ordonez is hitting .237 with an OPS of .603 vs RHp’s this season. There is no reason to play him against any RHP, and 18 milion reasons, apart from winning, to bench him. Thames has a .790 OPS vs RHP’s.

Actually, due to the way the contract was structured, Ordonez only has 138 more plate appearances until the option vests for 2010. It’s 1,080 PAs in ’08 and ’09 combined for the option to vest, and he’s at 942 as of gametime tonight. So it’ll probably vest if he plays, say, 33 more games (assuming 4 PAs per game). So roughly half the games left on the schedule. Yikes. The only upside is that there’s virtually no way his similar 2011 option will ever vest.

Your right Googe – I was looking at AB’s, not TPA’s.
JL must be seeing Maggs .167/.259 against righties in July as improvement – a cool .154/.216 post all-star??
Is he challenging DD to make some big trades??

Miggs keeps hacking out of the strike zone. Lucky to get the Maggs walk call and 3 runs result. Glad Dusty remembered which end of the bat to hold.
Can we go on with it??? Mathis is no world beater but French looks like he is giving them batting practise with the deep flyouts.

Kinsler just hit the triple, someone please tell me why Mario sounds so excited, and before I could even get this typed they sound just as excited about Youngs double. And with enthusiasm and glee he just said “Rangers put up a 4 spot”
Crap that gets on my nerves. Rich you though you were mad last night, I’ve already got a headache.

Walking the guy from 2-1 with 2 outs ends up costing 4 runs. It looks like a run race with at least 10 needed with these starters.

It takes some gift to keep getting hits outside the strike zone. Miggs just doesn’t leave any alone anymore – he had to do a golf swing recently against the Chisox pitcher it was that low.
He either has something on his mind or I get the feeling he wants out.

I know Rich is screaming right now – Santiago no bunting there.

nice error when it was actually a pick off and it turns into another run. Tigers are depressing me right now.

Boy, this is getting old. Runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs and again JL does not have Santiago bunt. So, what does he do strikeout, then Ryan grounds to pitcher and Granderson flies out, end of inning. The manager has to understand the team is not scoring runs, therefore JL use your head and bunt. It changes everything on the field with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out.

Why was Santiago not bunting??

This team is going nowhere. They seem to have one or two opportunities a game to do something and rarely do they come through. This team rarely can comeback from that kind of hole. (yes and that is two whole runs) They are depressing me right now.

another extra base hit. The difference in this game they have mostly extra base hits and we only have one.

No more screaming from me, GK. I knew he wouldn’t bunt there. I’ve given up on Leyland. You’ll also notice he leaves French out there to get hammered and leaves Miner in the pen. So what was the article on Miner for again?
.
Now we’re getting shut down by Jason Grillii, of all people. So predictable.
.
I had gone over to watch Buehrle go for a 2nd consecutive perfect game, but he lost it as soon as I got there.

Did I say that I was depressed. How can they look so good after CWS and look so pathetic against Texas. They look bored and disinterested.

JL is on a roll today. The 4th inning no bunt, the intentional walk to Jones followed by a run scoring hit by Hamilton and now Miner gives up a home run to the first batter he faces. So far 3 for 3. The team is taking it’s cues from their leader.

This team needs a trade(s) just to shake things up. I hope DD doesn’t get taken because any GM can see how desperate they have become.

Wow! How did that happen?

It’s about time Cabrera gets charged with the error that I think most of us could dig out. Good call ump.

I would suppose we’re gong to have one of those patented Jim Leyland outbursts tonight. And the guys will go yeah, sure boss. Then say all the right things in the media.

While I agree that Santiago should of bunted there, the way this team is hitting is hardly his fault. He cannot get out there and take the swings for them, these are career hitters that should be doing a heck of a lot better than they are.

Look at Leyland’s face. Ooooh, Grandpa’s mad at us. :-)

They couldn’t do any worse if they went up there and swung with their eyes closed. Really Really frustrated. DID I SAY THAT ALREADY.

Well, we’ve all but forgotten what it’s like to see the Tigs bat through the order. Would be nice to see right now.

What a fitting end to today’s game Everett takes called third strike. We had a grand total of 7 hits today, 1 after the 4th and it was in the 9th. Today’s lineup had a .252 BA with Cabrerra in without him it was .242 what a sorry excuse for a major league offense. Inge strikes out 3 times, I know he is hurt but right now he is hurting the team. The bottom of the order is a diaster with the top not much better. I just don’t understand how the entire team can be so flat!

Might need to take a breather from them tomorrow night.

This team has really taken the fun out of watching baseball. Through the years of being a Tiger fan I don’t think I’ve ever seen such demoralizing play as we’ve witnessed over the last two years. If either the Twins or Sox were to go on a roll and win say 15 of 20, they could just bury us. This isn’t the baseball I grew up with. Kaline and Cash and Gates Brown pinch hit homers. No tenacity like Jack Morris or Gibby. No, I don’t know what this is, but it’s not Tiger Baseball.

–Ed

Pathetic!

Now 4-8 post ASG. Is it possible that Leyland could lose this team in the 2nd half for the 4th season in a row? That would be almost beyond belief. Well, he said in his postgame (what little they showed of it) that he didn’t think his hitters were pressing. What game is he watching?
.
I found it interesting that Rod Allen said the key to the game was when Leyland failed to have Santiago bunt in the 4th inning. Obviously we’re not the only ones noticing this stuff. Did JL think that Razor was going to drive in two more runs? I find all this rather disturbing.
.
Typical starter-like performance from Miner. Comes in, gives up a solo homer, then settles in and pitches well. There it is again.
.
I didn’t get mad (that’s extremely rare) or frustrated. I was just kind of bored with the whole thing. Oh well, Grilli shuts us down and gets the win (does that embarrass ANYBODY?) and the “beanball war” was just silly. Can’t even do that well.
.
Maybe we should trade for some in-your-face a**hole type who’s been on a winner before. Somebody’s got to fire these gentlemen up.
.

The team has lost what little confidence they had going into this series. This is the most frustrating, pathetic form of baseball I’ve witnessed in my days. No one shows any energy or emotion and it’s starting to result in stupid errors, careless throws & poor judgement. This season is a lost cause as the Tigs have all or most of the regulars hitting way below their career averages. It’s too bad as they started the season out with solid defense and the pitching was 60% solid with rare glimpses of hope from the 4 & 5 starters. Heck, I’d even trade Cabrera for a couple of guys that have desire and talent. I’ll have to skip tomorrow’s debacle.

Jim

Look at any box score in MLB tomorrow, and i would be shell shocked if any other team in either league was 0-12 from it’s 1-2-3 guys. Absolute murder! I’ve not seen a solid line drive double from anybody in our lineup in a long time. I’m not defending Leyland, but even if Santiago does bunt, we do not score. That’s the reality of it! We just don’t score! JV will probably lose tomorrow 2-0. We’re holding on to first place by default. This lineup needs to be dramatically shaken up. Lead off with Cabrera; he hits bloop singles, and doesn’t drive in anyone. When will this madness end?

Greg

Let me launch a pre-emptive strike against anyone who says we’re a bunch of whiners who can’t appreciate a first place team. Here’s the deal: we’ve had two winning streaks, one of seven games, one of six games. Take away those two weeks and we’ve been watching a 39-47 team play all season. That’s why none of this first place stuff seems real. That’s it right there.
.
Looks to me like the Sox sux, the Twins are twinkies, and the Tigers are kittens, but somebody’s going to actually win this thing. Don’t ask me who.
.
–Rich

You’re right Ed. There is no tenacity, no fight in them right now. Their hitting approach has changed from hacking at everything to becoming way too tentative. They let strikes go by and then start swinging defensively after getting behind in their counts. They’re way out of sync with no confidence. It creates the illusion that the opposing pitchers are making their pitches. A lot of those pitches looked hittable again tonight.
.
Then there’s Cabrera who doesn’t seem to have a hitting approach. No disrespect to Miguel, he is, after all, the best hitter on the team as his average shows. But it’s all pure talent and he’s a free swinger. So he continues to get his hits in harmless situations but fails in key situations. It’s a lack of plate (mind) discipline in meaningful RBI situations. If he isn’t going to step it up and get his mind in the game, then somebody else is gonna to have to.
.
With everybody hitting so inconsistently/poorly hard to say what to do with the lineup. Why not put some pressure on Placido and bat him first? See how he responds. What the heck, bat Carlos second. If you want, bat Curtis 3rd. Personally, with his present average, I’d bat him 5th. I’d put the pressure on Maggs and bat him 3rd. It may be, as Dan says, “hope and dream”, but if there is not going to be a trade, then Magglio at least partially returning to form might be our only hope for a rejuvenated offense. It would be a good start anyway. And come on JL, 4-3 game, 2 on and no outs and you’re not bunting Santiago? That is mind boggling. You take what is given to you. Play for the tie first and go from there…..always play to change the momentum of the game.
.
Polanco
Guillen
Ordonez
Cabrera
Granderson
Inge
Thomas
Laird
Santiago

When Marcus starts I’d flip flop him with Inge. We’ve got all the defense we need in the infield. Keep the bats in the outfield.

OK – IT’S TIME (WAY PAST) TO START FINING THESE BUMS!!!
Caps intended. Either you produce or pay up!!!
MCab just seems bored & doesn’t seem bothered when he strikes out!
