Verlander, Jackson, Granderson get all-star nods, Inge in final vote

The Tigers are back to having a pack at the All-Star Game. This time, it’ll be the young core of the team.

Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson, whose dominant pitching has been a big reason for Detroit’s lead atop the American League Central, will join center fielder and leadoff man Curtis Granderson at the Midsummer Classic July 14 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. It marks the second time in three years that the Tigers have had as many as three players in the All-Star Game.

All three were selected by player balloting, which took place last week.

The Tigers have a chance at a fourth with Brandon Inge, who’s one of five candidates in the Final Vote. Balloting is now underway at MLB.com. He’ll be vying against former Tigers teammate Carlos Pena, Ian Kinsler, Chone Figgins and Adam Lind.

looks like the kittens came to play again today.

Granderson has to feel pretty blessed to be going. He is not having a particularly good season.
.
It would be nice to see Brandon go. He is struggling lately but has delivered what most fans asked for before the season. Good D, .270 and some production.
.
Ricky–don’t go inside to Morneau

Well, so far those ground balls have not been finding any holes. Porcello is staying down for the most part.
.
Do we get any offense today from our side? yesterday there was none–other than the surprise that magglio provided. I sure hope they address this problem this month.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……….

Well that should wake you up Chad.
.
Mauer and Morneau are today’s Maris and Mantle
.
2 runs (and maybe more to come) are gonna be a whole lot to make up today for our feeble hitters.

Porcello has lost it. seems a shame to leave him in there.

Oh my–now the non-production infiltrates the defense. We’ll see the boys hurry up their ABs now–they will want to get out of town ASAP.
.
Pretty brutal–I attribute much of this to Mauer’s hit. I have no idea why they play him like Jason Giambi. That’s a serious overshift.
.
JL should not leave Porcello out there. who cares about our bullpen/ It’s not agood one anyways. Save him the embarassment and the wear on his arm.

We’ll be luck to get a run against Blackburn–maybe even another hit. We look absolutely dreadful offensively.

This one is over – This is a team that can’t hit and there is no way in hell that they are digging there way out of this whole. They have no freaking clue as to how to work a count. They have 7 hits in the 14 innings they have played completely pathetic. They are so flipping boring to watch lately, not to mention they are giving me an ulcer.

funny how Blackburn gets that outside strike but our guy doesn’t.

Must be a horrible feeling as a starting pitcher to think that if you give up a run you might not win the game. And you know these guys are thnking it.
.
Anderson’s position on this team has to be dealt with. I just don’t see how he helps. Can’t hit, no power, not a good defensive outfielder, poor base runnng instincts.

Twins humbled us again. We were lucky to win 1 out of the 3 here. Really lucky.

This teams problems are in the hitting. I actually think that for the most part we could get by with the pitching (however Verlander and Porcello have not been nearly as good lately which somewhat concerns me)

But on this road trip not counting the big three hits today.

Houston – lost – 9hits – 4 runs
Houston – lost – 3 hits – 1 run
Houston – win – 7 hits – 4 runs
_______________________
Oakland – lost – 6 hits – 1 run
Oakland – won – 12 hits 5 runs
Oakland – lost – 6 hits – 1 run
_______________________
Minnesota – win -17 hits – 11 runs – 16 inning game
Minnesota – lost – 5 hit – 3 runs

Quite an offensive barrage these guys have unloaded. I don’t have enough adjectives to describe how inept that is.
.
And I don’t have enough adjectives to describe my hatred for this home plate umpire today. The inequity in calls is glaring. That 4th inning would not have been nearly as bad if Porcello got the same calls that Blacburn, and Ni has gotten hosed as well. I don’t care if teams get those outside calls, I just want it to be the same for all.

That’s enough. DD get on the phone, Illitch, open up your pocket book and JL stop playing Anderson and Kelly.

They mailed this one in today. No effort, NOTHING

Our outfielders (including Thames) are collectively hitting .253 with 37 HRs
.
Pretty obvious where improvement is needed

Quite a weekend. Good pitching, bad pitching, bad hitting, good hitting, questionable managing, and bad umpiring. The best part is that it’s over and we can get back to playing “normal” baseball.
.
It appears to me that the Tigers play scared in the Dome, and that Leyland manages scared too. They’ve had trouble with Chicago, but they don’t play scared. Just how it looks to me.
.
For the life of me, I don’t know why Everett didn’t throw for the force at thirdbase.
.
I figure the guys will hit better once they’re back in Detroit. Seems like we’ve been on the road the entire month of June. Need to get another little win streak going now.
.
One move I’d make right now is sending Kelly down, since he’s done all he’s going to do for us at this time, and recalling Clete. And there’s no point in playing Anderson if he’s never going to bunt for a hit. Just save him to pinch run.
.
Any deals made or not made are still down the road and the situation hasn’t developed enough yet to know exactly which way to go. There’s a possibility we’ll need hitters, starting pitchers, and relief pitchers. Obviously we’re not going to acquire all of this.
.
The Twins are coming to Detroit twice during the second half, and these series need to be won. No splits, no eking out one win, none of that. We can win this thing, but it will take winning the big games.
.
–Rich

Well, this series went pretty much like I thought it would with us getting 1 out of three. Actually pretty darn lucky we weren’t swept. These Twins games are pretty much all alike in that their big guns seem to show up and ours take the series off. The M&M boys went 13-27 against us and Granderson and Cabrera were 6-29. Pathetic. There is no reason Clete shouldn’t be with the big club. He’s a good defensive outfielder with a good arm. He might not have Anderson’s speed, but he has good baserunning instincts. And I don’t want to hear about how he got exposed his last month up with the Tigers. Heck, with the way this team’s hitting, everyone’s been exposed. Get him back up and play him. And DD’s got to make a move and get some offense. Maybe a package with Thames and Zumaya could bring us a stick. Would hate to see Zoom go, but I think Perry will eventually get that role.

–Ed

Mauer and Morneau 13-27…………..and Leyland said he wasn’t going to let those two beat him. What exactly does that mean? Other than that rather crazy “walk the bases loaded with Zumaya on the mound” thing, I saw nothing of the kind. I’m not saying you intentionally walk them both, but you don’t have to try to get them out. That doesn’t work. Pitch around them, give them nothing good, and our pitchers should be able to get the other guys. And announcing to the world that “I’m not going to let them beat us” is a silly thing to do. For a guy who rarely says anything useful, he could have kept his mouth shut on that score.
.
They’ll need to win at least 6 of the 10 remaining matchups to win this division.
.
–Rich

Was Kelly really batting clean up? I don’t get that at all.

Congrats to the 3 Tigers that are going to the All Star game for sure – I bet Curtis will soak it up – he seems truly humbled and appreciative of his successes.

glad the road trip is over, to be honest I am glad we are still in first place after that trip!

Rich, you are spot on again re Leyland. The gruff almost bragadaccio style is old and stale. Why he makes thes “pronouncements” is beyond me. It’s belittling to his pitching staff and submissive in nature. On top of that it is kind of tipping your strategy. Go out and play ball and shut up.
.
The problems on this team are more serious than sloughing them off with rationale such as, “After all this we are still in 1st place”, or we’ll be better next series or better when we get back home. Those kinds of excuses are a prescription for failure. The team needs to be improved now. They can’t wait for Magglio or wait for Carlos. They need a dynamic change or the thin edge of the wedge that we have seen in this last roadtrip will be invisible all too soon.

A couple of things:

I saw where the Tigers made a couple of signings:

http://twitter.com/kileymcd/status/2495990213

.
Also, it is not too early to test the tradewinds. Hairston was just signed by the A’s. Good for them.
.
Anybody else dubious of how the Tigers handle the disables list and injury reports?
.
How does Bonderman go from a minor league assingment to a MLB game to obscurity so fast? He pitches one game and all of a sudden they feel he has no arm strength? They aren’t able to get a premonition of this before? Strange.
.
Guillen has a “sore” shoulder. For 2 months? C’mon, if it is sore it gets better quicker than that. If not cortisone helps. Is it a tear of the rotator cuff? I have heard virtually nothing of the severity of this injury. It just seems to linger on from day to day and now, month to month. Seems odd.
.
We won’t even begin to talk about the Dontrelle Willis story. Thats’s Rod Serling stuff.

“need a dynamic change or the thin edge of the wedge that we have seen in this last roadtrip will be invisible all too soon” Wow Dan, tearin’ it up! Sounds like a Dylan song. All you have to do is sing a nasally drawn out drawl on edge, wedge, seen and soon. Try this at home, boys and girls.
.
I guess they keep health issues secretive so as not to reveal too much info on potential club assets? My job requires that I have detailed health information so this is doubly frustrating for me. But anyway…………
.
I was thinking someone should create the Ultimate List of Jim Leyland Quotes. You know, stuff like:
.
I like him. I like him a lot.
.
I don’t believe in all that chemistry stuff.
.
I won’t let Mauer and Morneau beat us.
.
That’s the biggest bunch of BS in the history of baseball. (today’s newest one, on homerun derbies messing up a guy’s swing. Thanks Jason)
.
I’ll be perfectly honest with you.
.
Marcus Thames is my fulltime leftfielder.
.
At my house, we pray after we eat.
.
Hey Gomez, you going to do anything today? I’ll send you to Erie.
.
Anymore questions? Then I’m done!
.

.
p.s. anybody got more JL quotes?

“We stink—–I stink” (implied to the media–“So what are you gonna do about it”)
.
“If you can’t throw strikes, then you don’t belong here”. (Usually this comment directed at a pitcher is repeated a couple of weeks later).
.
“Phenomenal” On Dontrelle Willis before the season started.
.
“What’s wrong with you?” (When a mound visit requires an encouraging word)
.
“Yippee!” (On getting a 2 year extension and joining DD’s list of bad contracts)
.
“Gimmee a pack of Marlboros” (This is repeated about 3 times a day)
.
“Did we really have Carlos Pena here?” (from a recurring nightmare).
.
“Hi honey, I’m home!” (Oh, my mistake, that was Jack Nicholson)

I said it before & I’ll say it AGAIN!!! Tigers bullpen STINKS!!!
JL takes French out of the game the other day with a 7-2 lead – one out from a possible win. Who does he bring in – none other than the worse – Miner. Gives up 5 runs to let Minn. tie the game & they luckily win in 16 innings. If I’m watching any game as soon as JL goes to the BP I turn the game off! I don’t have the stomach to watch ANOTHER game blown by the so-called BP. Might as well leave the starter in the game even if he’s given up 20 runs. Try to trade Mags for a decent reliever – if anyone would take him.

It will be a crime if Inge doesn’t go to the All-Star game!!! Everyone get out there & vote for him.

And lest we forget (re Denard Span):
.
I don’t know. I’m thinking about throwing [him] the blooper pitch. I’m dead serious, too. I’m not kidding you. I’m thinking about trying to get in his head a little bit and have a guy throw a blooper ball. We did it with Sheffield one time. I’m seriously thinking about it. Throw the old blooper ball, let him wind up, trying to hit it out of the park, maybe get him out of sync for a little bit. Because he kills us. We just don’t get him out.”

Yeah, that’s a good one. Not the kind of talk I’d want from my commanding officer before going into battle.
.
Interesting stat: since taking over first place on May 10th, we’ve played Minnesota six times, winning one, and Chicago five times, winning three. And we’re still in first place. I wouldn’t have thought that possible.
.
Is everyone voting for Inge? I’ve never ever voted in these things, but I put about 30 votes in yesterday. After all the community work, plus putting up with all that was done to him last summer, he deserves our votes. I’ll be putting in more between now and Thursday. Let’s get the man on the AS team.
.
–Rich

Bummer weekend.. One of Three games is better than us having been swept, but I wonder if we had lost the first game, would our chances been better and the Tiger been woke up and ready, had the Twinkees just stepped on our tail Friday night? and we might have won the next two games? We’ll never know. What I couldn’t understand, when we aren’t hitting, why are we (Tigers) trying for the seats, and not manufacturing runs, a bunt, a walk, a pitch runner, and a lucky placed hit to bring the man in? That 16 inning game was a prime example, of no one, going up and trying to bunt, and get on base to rattle the pitcher.

On quotes, I have two to add…
~
Porcello, for the first time, I thought lost his composure,”

Leyland on the Twins Morneau & Mauer, : “It’s probably the best back-to-back tandem of anyone in baseball.”—

gee, I want to know, here’s a kid (Porcello), doing the job for the team, and just where is Willis? , Robertson?, Bondo? They have all had health issues, sure, and the lineup of Jv, Ej, and RP, is looking pretty dang good! Too bad Jim couldn’t say anything good about his own guys? Laird deserves press, covering a 16 inning game, and keeping us in it, with Freddi Dolsi, screwing up pitch signals, and not doing his “defense” after he releases his pitches. Tell me that Gerald is expected to do that, yes, they all need to earn their money.. but lets face it.. Jim shows favoritism.. as in R Raburns case, and not offering the same treatment for other players efforts!

I could add some more Leyland quotes, but one of my favorite quotes of the season to date came Sunday morning in the visiting clubhouse at the Metrodome from an unidentified player, who wanted to know if they were taking batting practice on the field or in the cage.
.
So he asked, “Are we hitting outside?”
.
Answered a teammate, “Well, technically, no …”
