Tigers call up Dusty Ryan

The Tigers brought up some catching help Friday, at least for the moment, by recalling Dusty Ryan from Triple-A Toledo.

Ryan temporarily fills the roster spot that opened Thursday, when Detroit placed Dontrelle Willis on the 15-day disabled list. Alfredo Figaro will be promoted from Double-A Erie to start Saturday for the Tigers, but will have to be added to the roster before Saturday’s game.

Ryan spent most of last September as the Tigers’ everyday catcher, batting .318 with two homers and seven RBIs in 15 games, but went back to prospect status once Detroit traded for Gerald Laird at last December’s Winter Meetings. He got off to a slow start in Spring Training and then into the season at Triple-A Toledo, batting .156 in April with 13 strikeouts in 45 at-bats. He rebounded to hit .309 in May with four homers and 12 RBIs.

For the year, the 24-year-old Ryan is hitting .259 with seven homers and 23 RBIs.

Ryan’s recent performance raised speculation that he could be promoted to back up Laird in Detroit, where Dane Sardinha’s hitting struggles left him out of the starting lineup while the Tigers played six Interleague road games without a designated hitter at Pittsburgh and St. Louis. For Friday, at least, they’ll go with three catchers

That mean that Pineapple is headed down?

Long overdue. Even if the rest of the team was hitting well, you simply can’t carry a catcher hitting under .100. Sorry, Pineapple.
I like the moves DD/JL have made lately. If we end up not making the playoffs by one game or two games, I would have to question their decision to stick with Willis for so long, but then again, we still haven’t seen how the replacement fifth starter will do. Hopefully Figaro brings it tomorrow.

Dane likely will be designated for assignment and released or sent to the minors. You cannot carry three catcher. Especially if you are holding Maggs out for the series. Toledo is without a catcher who can hit. I wonder if Avila is going up to see if he can hit AAA pitching. He can still work on his defense and blocking pitches with regular duty at Toledo. I would send Dane to Erie to work with the your pitchers there to help them develop and as insurance incase of an injury or if Dusty is not ready.

My guess is that, seeing the pitching matchups tomorrow, Fox will broadcast the Tiger/Brewer game to “close friends and blood relatives” only. Either that or the folks who haven’t yet picked up their converter box and are still trying to figure out how to adjust the rabbit ears to get decent reception.

I hope Dusty does a better job of catching than he did last year. Heck, if he hits that well, he could DH.
I never get the Tigers on Fox, never. Best I can do is watch the archive on MLB.TV.

I can never get it on Fox either. The mlb ticket on Direct TV has to black it out. I hate the black out rules. I am not going to watch the Mets/Tampa, I hope they get rained out.

Poor Dane, I understand the decision, he is a great catcher but hit hitting is absolutely aweful. I agree Rich I hope that Dusty is a better catcher than he was last year. I remember that there was a stat last year regarding games he caught. I don’t remember the exact numbers but the pitching staff’s era was (I think) nearly 2 points higher on games that he caught. Hopefully he has improved this year.
Going to the game tonight, I have a feeling this is going to be a hard game to get in. Although not raining at my house right this minute, it doesn’t look real good.
