Friday: Tigers vs. Brewers

As expected, Magglio is again out of the lineup, as he’ll continue to be for a little while. And while Jim Leyland was asked about his contract extension, he also spent quite a few minutes discussing Ordonez’s situation.

“Magglio Ordonez is not benched,” Leyland said Friday afternoon. “What I said was, and what I meant was, that I’m going to get him out of there indefinitely. And what I mean by that is, by Magglio’s own admission, and from what I’ve seen and the coaches have seen, we were kind of beating our head against the wall, all of us. I’ve tried [batting him in] the third spot. I’ve tried the fifth spot. I’ve tried the sixth spot. For whatever reason, we just haven’t been able to get him going yet, and that’s also by his own admission.

“Nobody’s upset with Magglio Ordonez. This is another thing that a manager does. A manager tries to think, ‘How do I get the best out of my players?’ We’ve looked at video. We’ve hit extra. For whatever reason, it’s not working right now. I don’t want to say this is the last straw, but this is another idea that I’ve come up with. When you keep beating your head against the wall and nothing happens, every once in a while you have to back off.”

What is interesting is that Magglio has really good numbers against Braden Looper. I mean his batting average is over 600 against him. While I don’t have a problem sitting him for a few days, I wonder if putting him out there low in the order against a pitcher he has had great success against might not be a bad idea??

Interested to see that contract extension right now.

Could be an example of Ready, Fire, Aim by JL and his coaching staff. I agree that Mags needs some time off but when you are hitting .600 against a guy I would throw him at the 7 or 8 hole and let him get a few cuts. Didn’t anybody take a look at the pitching asignments this weekend before this sort of thing was done?

I’ve been looking at the hitter vs pitchers numbers all year, and there’s been a large number of times that Maggs has great numbers against that night’s starter, then he goes out and does nothing. Those numbers come from the old Maggs. I guess if you’re going to “get him away from it” then you do just that. I’m in agreement with this.

Rich:

I saw that they gave JL a two year extension. In the future for all of our sakes, can you please ask your agent (Scott Boras) to not be so difficult in negotiations. Had you not demanded so much they might not have walked away from hiring you and gone to the fall back of extending JL. Now we got at least another year of the “Old Coot”. I get that you have a family to feed and all that but a limo to the ball park each night? Sheesh. :)

Maggs’ numbers the last three seasons while batting cleanup .318/.379/.493, .364/.435/.593, .299/.351.479…. maybe Leland would want to try him in the cleanup spot? Scratch that thought, Leyland’s lineup with Maggs batting clean up would probably push Cabrera to 5th and Granderson to 6th…

Leyland’s extension: No surprise coming from me, bad move bad move BAD move. Why not wait till the end of the season? If we go into our annual second half slump, we’re stuck with yet another dead contract. What’s with DD and these contracts? Man, we’ll never get to see what this club could do with another manager. This is a truly depressing development.

Rich:

It is a ponedrous move. Not like him not having an extension was creating a distraction or that there was the potential for him to be stolen away. Why not wait abit and see what happens. It is a long season. Last year was a disappointment for me. He stuck with Sheff out of loyalty and it nearly cost him his job. This year it looks like he’s not going to get into that same situation with Mags so off he goes to the corner of the dugout to hit fungo balls for a few weeks.

I think he never really took ownership for the pitching staff fiasco’s last year and Hernandez ended up taking the bullet. Since we’re not hitting I guess Mac gets to take that bullet this year. At one point does the big kahuna have to take ownership and take one for the team?

Well, just so you know, when DD called me and asked whether he should go Rich or JL I fought like a banshee for you.

Well Eric, I’ve never counted them up, but JL has about 1000 more wins than I do, and his are in the major leagues. But all kidding aside, and to be “perfectly honest with you,” I like Jim Leyland. I like him a lot. He’s a good person and we share a couple of basic managerial tenets, one being to treat the players as you’d want to be treated, and the other being to understand how incredibly difficult this game can be to play. Where we differ is in game management decisions, personnel decisions, and stubborness. He’s the stubborn one, not me. :-)
.
It makes it easier, at least, to like the guy.

Oh I like the guy too. Alot. Great to have him for a neighbor. Best manager I think the club has had since Sparky. But, his stubborness is difficult to take. We saw it last year and we’re seeing it this year. Although we are not privy to the clubhouse and the inner workings I have been struck by how uncanny the folks on this blog site have been in predicting and seeing things (even though its all just speculation). And, when I see things on tv and wonder what the heck? it is refreshing to see others wondering the same thing.

Three run homer int he first inning with G man pitching. It is deja vu all over again. But this one is on Brandon I think.

Grab your glove and a ball Zach.

I disagree with the extension.. I don’t understand it. I don’t understand why Illitch would let DD extend him.. If i’m Mr I, this is both of their last chance and if they don’t stay in it til the end of the season then they are both gone.. It’s another contract extension for mediocrity (a DD hallmark).

Coincidentally, Ilitch stopped by clubhouse before game tonight. When asked if he was pleased about Leyland extension, Ilitch said, “Very pleased, very pleased. I’m going to have a party for him.”

we go from free arby’s to no free arby’s

I am pleased

Who takes a limo to the park every day? Leland or Maggs?
Quite frankly, I’m in agreement with Rich. I don’t think Leland should have been offered an extension until the end of the season. These guys remind me of CEO’s, Wall Street, and bankers. Just give yourselves gigantic raises even if the company is going under. A limo to the park? Ridiculous!!!

My on and i drove my 18 year old car to the ball park a few weeks ago. He’s on unemployment and I’m on a fixed income. It was a real sacrifice to go to the game. All I can say is they better win the division….at least!
