Magglio returns, doesn't start

Magglio Ordonez was back in uniform for the Tigers as expected on Friday, but he was not in the starting lineup after four days off. Manager Jim Leyland had Clete Thomas in right field instead along with Jeff Larish at designated hitter and Ramon Santiago at shortstop, as he tried to load up the lineup with left-handed hitters. Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez is giving up a .308 average and .874 OPS to left-handed batters, compared with .207 and .530 against right-handed hitters.

Let me wade in here on the Maggs scenario. I find it interesting that he is not immediately restored to the lineup. Interesting I say, and keep in mind that I think this is a better lineup today without him in it.
The thing with Magglio is he could be trade material. It would have been far better to have taken advantage of his value before this year started but he is in an option year which might be an incentive to trade him now.

Maggs has an $18 Mil club option with a $3 Mil buyout; this becomes GUARANTEED with 457 plate appearances this year. Maggs needs just 367 AB to ensure his 2010 salary.

Would JL and DD be transparent enough to limit his ABs? I doubt that for several reasons. One is practicality–he is a great hitter and if he gets hot he can be an instrumental force on the team. The other is the player union and action they would take if they see some sort of collusion. Again-this is not Tiger management MO. But I could see him traded.

Other contracts to think about are Inge, Bonderman and of course Robertson. Nate is making millions more than Brandon Inge!! Bonderman almost twice what Brandon makes. Mothers, don’t let your boys grow up to be cowboys—teach them how to pitch!

I am no expert, but I don’t believe it is collusion to limit Maggs playing time to save $15mil. It is a club option, after all.

Either way, if he does not catch fire before the end of June, it does make sense to trade him (assuming there are takers).
