Zumaya to begin rehab assignment Saturday

Good news on Joel Zumaya: He’ll begin a Minor League rehab assignment Saturday with Class A Lakeland. This will not be the stretch where he goes back-to-back days to see if his arm’s ready to pitch in games. He’ll make a couple outings there, then head to Double-A Erie or Triple-A Toledo for the final test before getting the call.

The bad news on Zumaya is that his velocity was supposedly down in his last extended Spring Training game earlier this week. However, given the windy conditions that day, the Tigers aren’t concerned yet.

And at this point, the Tigers are making no secrets about how much Zumaya means to the Tigers bullpen.

“He’ll be a welcome addition,” manager Jim Leyland said. “That fills a gap we really need.”

Kind of asinine to boo ANY of the players at the home opener. Plenty of time for that nonsense later.

Happy Opening Day – holy Cabrera! Awesome job on offense today boys, and now Larish pops one out there – love seeing this kind of explosion.

I didn’t see the very start Rich – fans were booing? Something I”ll never understand.

Keep going Mondo – the boys gave you lots of comfort room out there, but you don’t seem to need it anyways.

During the player intros along the 3rdbase line, Lyon got booed heavily, some for Leyland, a sprinkling for Everett, etc. This is just what I picked up from the telecast. Regarding Lyon, it’s only one game he’s pitched. Let’s wait awhile before we turn him into the second coming of Jason Grilli.

Good performance today. Got a couple of sac flies while the game was still close. We may have a really good rotation if Verlander comes around, which I would expect him to do for the most part. He actually may pitch better if he feels it’s not all on him. That was a heckuva catch by Inge in the 1st inning. Seemed like our normal outfield positioning today was leaning up against the fence. :-)

I’m sure everyone in attendance had a real good time. Not in bad shape at 2-3, too bad we blew that one Tuesday night. We need to stay at .500 or at least very close to it for April. Anything more would be great. I am, however, still waiting for us to win a close game.

I hate to rain on the parade, but I wouldn’t expect anything from Zumaya.

Well we just got back from the game. Wow did Cabrera smoke those balls, especially the one that was the double, I don’t believe you can hit a ball any harder than that.
.
Things that suprised me during the game, although they were few the boos at the beginning were very unfortunate and inappropriate. And how early a lot of the stadium cleared out. Yes I know it was a blow out, but I would say that half or a little less cleared out by the 7th inning.
.
Brandon’s catch I am not sure you will see a better catch all year, that was something and I hope those at home saw how freaking far he ran to get that it was incredible!!!! If that is not ESPN top play then I don’t know what would be. Galarraga was awesome and they looked quite confused at times, and Texas is a hitting team.
.
Weather was nice, we were in the sun and it was quite comfortable. I don’t know if you all saw it but Kid Rock was there and sang Take Me out To the Ball Game. I think that we should always have someone sing it instead of that lame thing that we usually get. Not that you are going to get a celebrity to do it everytime, but even local celebreties or just everyday people.

Good evening Tiger Guys and Gals. Great game today. Already a marked improvement on 0-7 from 08. I also don’t feel so pressured to keep defending Inge to Dan and other Inge critics. Rich, I don’t know if you saw my earlier comment last week, but the entire family will be in Baltimore at the end of May. Hope to see you there. There is hope that the rotation may be a tad above average. No boo birding from me, but Lyon does seem to be the big question mark. Hopefully, my fellow Virginian, J. Verlander gets us to 500
tomorrow. My birthday present this week was getting to celebrate 50 years as a Tiger fanatic. Good blogging Tigers!

What a great day at the ballpark! The opening ceremonies were very well done, and really put the day in its proper perspective.

And speaking of perspective, we are only 1/2 game out of 1st place, and we’ve played a game more than anyone else in our division. Overall- 4 of our 5 starters pitched well enough to win the first 5 games, with Verlander being the odd guy out. I still have my doubts about him being the ace, but we all know what he can be on any given day.

*
Alot of errors in the opening series, but artificial turf is funny, so I’ll give the guys the benefit on that one. And Inge more than made up for his error with the spectacular catch today. I was watching Guillen the whole time, thinking he’s never gonna make it- and out of nowhere comes Brandon!

*
The only guy who didn’t play in TOR was Larish and he looked to be just fine today.

*
I’d like to believe the season started today. I don’t think I’ve complained about the functionality of this blog, yet- but please add my name to the list of unhappy folks.
*
And Jason- how come no Twitter lately on here?

Haven’t posted for a few days but have read all the posts – my hat off to those with the patience to battle the Blog’s technical problems. I agree Tracy, Jason, don’t stop with the twitter unless you are having the same problems we are.
.
The Tigers are really looking and playing like a Team and also enjoying their baseball. Really sad to see any of these guys booed – they are all giving it their best shot.
.
Go JV tomorrow.

Nice job Armando. In fact, all our starters had very commendable outings with the exception being JV. Hopefully this will be something that gets contagious. You think JL was trying to get the message across to Verlander without actually mentioning his name, on what it is to be a “pitcher” instead of a guy who thinks he can blow it by hitters? Armando may not have the heat that JV does, but his demeanor on the mound and his approach to getting hitters out more than makes up for it. Was a little surprised that JL came out and got Perry with 2 outs and 13 run lead but it probably was the right thing to do. Ryan didn’t have his best control and no sense letting him walk another batter and possibly give up a longball. That could have damaged his confidence. This way he comes back fresh for his next outing with a blank slate. Good job,JL. GO TIGERS!!!

That was a great way to open the season. Some OBSERVATIONS. And I emphasize the word because I see them as being different than criticisms.
.
I actually like Brandon Inge. No need to defend him from me. But, I also call’em as I see ‘em. Brandon has difficulty in making certain kinds of plays. He has the best range of any third baseman I have seen. His hitting is exasperating when he gets himself into a bad mode. Those are all observations. Can you have a .205 hitter in your lineup and win? IMO, no, you can’t. So hopefully, he won’t be a .205 hitter ever again. I think he is genuinely one of the higher quality individuals in the game. I am thrilled to see he has been willing to modify his approach at the plate. I don’t think he will ever hit that poorly again but if he hits .205 though I would be all over management for continuing to play him.
.
I thought the JL move to remove Perry was an interesting one. I think he is right to pull a reliever if he exhibits control issues. The thing here, is you want to se JL be consistent with this approach and apply it across the board to all his relievers all the time. That’s the message they need. JL does seem to camoflauge messages to other individuals through the critique of other players performances. You don’t want to get in the habit of being too obtuse though. He should be able to sit and talk with Verlander without sending subliminal messages.
.
Granderson is a better hitter when he is able to use all the field. He is a natural pull hitter though and I’ve never noticed anyone be put out with sharply hit ground balls to the first baseman as much as him. Sure would like to see him perfect the art of the drag bunt. It would open up a new world of opportunity for him as a hitter.
.
G-Man (as Tiger Girl calls him, “Mondo”–great name by the way), is establishing himself as the Ace of the staff. There is a big difference between (self) confidence and self involved. Mondo is absolutely confident on the mound and we are very fortunate to have him on this staff.
.
Polanco does not seem to be getting good wood on the ball–I hope he is able to get his stick going. Everett too. He should be able to hit better than he has been and I hope JL is not afraid to bunt with him to move a runner(s) up for the top of the order.
.
I hope Fien tears up AAA and earns his way back to help this bullpen out.
